- Mark TReykjavik, Iceland5 contributionsMedieval timesThis was an out of the way place to get to but relatively easy via train, bus and walking. The day we visited was very quite. Castle with moat was very impressive. Absolute gem. The village of Muirden was fantastic and very picturesque with canal and locks. One of the best kept secrets of AmsterdamVisited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 April 2023
- deerroamRome, Italy92 contributionsLoved it!Great way to spend the day. The town is very beautiful and small. The sailing boat views and lots of yachts around. 13th century castle is preserved very well and the rooms are decorated so we can visualize the purpose of rooms and chambers.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2023
- rmnorton22 contributionsExcellent castle to visit in NLThis is an excellent castle to visit if you could only see one. It is picturesque, well maintained, it has an interesting history and was a "working" castle built for defense and protection. Numerous rooms are furnished and the audio guides provide a great narrative.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 June 2023
- JklUnited States66 contributionsGreat castleFantastic historical castle, you actually get to walk up ancient stair cases into the towers. Very convenient to Amsterdam and the little town of Muiden is quite charming as well. You can get here by bus and train but I don't recommend it due to the bus schedule. I would suggest getting a taxi or uber or driving here.Visited June 2023Written 1 July 2023

- SOPHIEEngland, United Kingdom40 contributionsOne of the oldest and pre-served castles in NL!This castle is the real deal, feels very medieval. Audio guides are available inside the castle gates which adds to the experience and provides a greater sense of the people who occupied the castle and each of the individual rooms. Slightly challenging to get to from Amsterdam (had to take a train to weesp, then the 110 bus to Muiden centrum before walking the rest - approx. 45 minutes in total, not counting the waiting time between the train and the bus). However, definitely worth a visit!Visited June 2023Written 6 August 2023
- Nadina PNew York City, New York339 contributionsCountryside castle in striking distanceWe took an Uber to this caste; it's accessible by public transportation, but it was only 20 mins from our hotel via car, so it was totally worth it for us. It was far more off the beaten track than I expected; Muiden is the only place I went to in the Netherlands where they were surprised to encounter English speakers, though everyone spoke it. The castle grounds are gorgeous; we went at the very end of September, and the gardens were still blooming. The inside of the castle was cool as well, and the audioguide was great. Unlike many castles/mansions I've toured, the vast majority of the space is open to tourists. There were great views of the town nearby, Fort Pampus, and even Amsterdam in the distance. There were great art displays, and some of the weaponry was even interactive. While it seems like foreigners don't really know about this spot, it seems like Dutch tourists did; we were among the firsts to enter, and by the time we left there were some sizeable groups coming in. I'm very glad I made the trip for this!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2023

Beautiful old castle surrounded by a moat, located in a lovely old village on the outskirts of Amsterdam- very accessible, in the summer by boat (which would be fabulous)
Nice tour with audio guide around the castle, very interesting and relaxed, not good for those with mobility issues (very steep staircases)

Lovely visit as part of a day exploring slightly further afield, yet in easy distance of central Amsterdam.
Good audio guides and tour route. Enjoyed the history of the fort and restoration, as well as the gardens.

Whilst we were in Amsterdam, we thought we would look at old castles because there must be a lot of history in the Netherlands. Muiderslot is an excellent place to visit.
Location wise it's not far from Amsterdam, and there's a good cycle path from Amsterdam Central over the coast (amazing views) to go and see the castle. There's also a way to take a train and bus here.
The town near the castle itself is picturesque, and the castle itself is a stunning old castle to visit. Whilst there has been a castle on the site for many centuries, it has been rebuilt and expanded over time.
When you go in you can see the gardens, and castle. Once you cross the moat there is an included audioguide pick-up area, a shop and cafe. Doing the two tour routes with the audioguide is highly recommended, although if you have limited mobility you might struggle to do this - there are small winding staircases which might be difficult to get through.
There is a lot to see and learn about, in how this castle was a centre of power for centuries.
It's a 1-2h visit, and afterwards you can go back and have dinner in the town itself. Recommended if you have a few extra days in Amsterdam, especially if you have the time to cycle out to the castle.

Hello
How much time does it take to reach the muiderslot castle by ferry from amsterdam central ?
Is it mandatory to take the guided tour ? Or can we do it on our own ?
Thks in advance

You do not have to take the guided tour. Although it is a lot nicer and you will get a better understanding of how the people lived. I have never heard people taking the ferry. You can reach t Muiderslot by bus from Amsterdam and it is possible to bike also from the Central station area. Or rent a scooter.Pubic transportation : you can take the train to Weesp, then rent a bike or take the bus. you can google it.There is also a very nice fortress town called Naarden about 15 minutes by bike from Muiden. The town has a very interesting history . Enjoy your time!!!
