Il Ponte is by the old bridge going across the river Avon, very centrally located in the town. The service was very friendly, the food excellent and the music was wonderfully authentically Italian. It was a great place to give out feet a rest and take a deep breath. The desserts were also very good!

A walk down from the village to The Devils Bridge can be recommended. We hoped to return up to the village by a smaller path, but the "path cleaner" hadn't done his job.

We visited the authentic town of Civita and walked the step road down to the bridge. It really is steep! the towering rock face was the backdrop as we decented into the valley of the nature park and you really got the view you were in the wilds of Italy. We enjoyed a coffee back in town which also had some nice produce stores. The drive into and out of the area was very pretty and worth the diversions from the main freeways. My review would have been of the town and surrounding area but there is no dot on TA so this bridge is the closet thing.

Took a gentle but relentless winding walkway down the gorge toward the end of the day when long shadows and cast to astound you with the myriad of colors, shades and grades of this spectacular natural gorge. Well traveled and well maintained with railings for most of the way. The effort rewarded for the entirety. The views across the chasm kept one's focus and feet engaged until the destination of the bridge was reached and crossed. A little local jeep for hire (running the route regularly) was a great way to end the excursion.

According to the news a terrible tragedy occurred in late August. A flash flood killed ten people in the canyon below the bridge. When we walked down the steep walk to the bridge in late September is was cordoned off with a sign stating that the area was under investigation and could not be accessed. Wished I’d know that before I spent 30 minutes walking down the steep hill, only to find out I had to walk back up without having the chance to see it. Minor issue I suppose when you consider the sad fate of the others.

A one in a lifetime experience... we actually walked all the way down and back .... it was a lot of effort but definitely worth it! There is also a navetta available.

As we were lodging in the hotel just above the gorge, we managed to get there early in the morning (the sun didn't reach the bottom yet), so we were alone. Nice walk up the stream and refreshing bath in under a waterfall. When we were leaving at ten a.m., groups started to arrive and broke the peace.
So, if you really want to enjoy it, go there before nine even if it is a bit cold.

We hiked down to the Devil's Bridge from Civita... felt like it was straight down! Fantastic views and worth the effort! Thankfully, our guide had a 4x4 come down to take us back to the town! Don't think we would have made it back up that steep path!

Hike down a zig-zag incline from the center of town to the bridge for a view of the gorge and shallow Ranganello river. If you don't want to make the climb back up, there is a jeep type vehicle available.

The well maintained paved route down took about an hour taking it slowly and a bit longer going back (stopping off for a drink at the cafe about half way up. Take plenty of water. Took a picnic down and went below the bridge down to the river and rested there, paddling in the cool water. Really interesting half day outing.

where did it get its name from and why is it called ponte di diavolo?

Because the bridge lies in a canyon with bad and terrifying rocks
In Italy this name is common to others bridges staying in bad valley
