- DCDolcevitaPuerto Vallarta, Mexico561 contributionsGigantic and beautiful! This is an enormous, gorgeous cathedral – its size is just hard to fathom. While we were there, two different masses were going on in various wings. It’s worth the extra pesos to tour the choir, though its exterior (not its interior) was the most beautiful part of the cathedral. There are still Aztec temples remaining below the foundations.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 April 2023

It was interesting to see how the cathedral is sinking. Make sure to see the pendulum that marks the movement over the last several hundred years. It is in the middle isle near the front of the church. Mass on Sunday starts at 0800 and is every hour after, there is also a Mass on Saturday at 5pm.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 May 2023

The tour covers the choir and cripts. It is very interesting and not that long. Our tour guide Gloria was excellent! She shared valuable information such as the history of the building, paintings, organ, etc. The tour of the cripts was very interesting and she shared some ghost stories (leyendas). The cost is $100.00 pesos per person. Worth it!Visited May 2023Written 2 June 2023

The origins of the church date back to the times of Cortez and has expanded through the centuries. The exterior exhibits the uniquely Mexican Chiguresque style of architecture while the inside is also very impressive . Of greatest interest is the gold leaf altar and the choir loft and two large organs.Visited August 2023Written 15 August 2023

After you enter the cathedral go to where the musical organs are and there should be a guide on the side selling timed tour tickets. Our guide was Alexia and she was fabulous.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2023

- 160SteveDavie, Florida41 contributionsA wonderful visit to a spectacular CathedralOn a trip to Mexico City to visit our son, we had to go to the Zocalo. After the mandatory Mercado shopping, we wondered into the Cathedral, which is a working church as well as an historic site. Its exterior architecture is spectacular, but then go inside to experience the incredible beauty of this monument. The fascinating naves, which dominate three separate sections are each differently adorned with gold and art. There is also a tribute to Pope Francis’ visit here several years ago. This is a must see in Mexico City.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 November 2023

Great cathedral worth to visit when around zocalo, as Dec 2023 the main front door is closed but you can enter and admire the beautiful status inside thru the side doors open early mornings. Recommended

This cathedral is the highlight of the huge zócalo square. This vast building is the largest church in central America and has been extended over the years. The ornate gold altar oozes Spanish extravagance.

Historical cathedral with amazing interior. The cathedral was protected by steel fence as there was a protect the day we were there. Praise to the government to protect the history and buildings from the potential damage of the protestors.

An absolute UNIT of a cathedral.
Supposedly the biggest and oldest in Latin America, you have to see it to believe it. It's one of those places where you can't wrap your mind regarding how they did it and how it resulted in something so beautiful
They have guides who tell you a lot of cool details about the different places of the church and you can even go underground. Highly recommended, as this place has A LOT of history. It's money well spend

We will be in Mexico City in January. I saw a beautiful early morning picture of the Cathedral and want to catch the sunrise outside of the Cathedral. Is it safe to try to capture some pictures in the early morning hours around the area? Thanks.

Some parts of the city centre are quite safe, and this is one of them, as many governmental offices are situated in that area.
But it depends where will you be staying as you may need to travel from your hotel for going to the Zocalo.
You should take a uber for going to the Zocalo or the closet street near that place.
Sunrise is around 6 and 7 am
Have a great trip.

Sí. Uber es la forma más rápida y segura de moverse por la ciudad. Probablemente encuentre más información en el foro de viajes de la Ciudad de México.

I'd like to go to a high mass and, from my limited Spanish, it looks like there aren't any from the website. True?
Bodericas
Mexico City, Mexico47 contributions
No, my friend, all masses seem to be in Spanish… yet, don't miss the experience: see, smell, listen, feel the crowd, enjoy the Cathedral in such a formal moment. It's an extraordinary experience, regardless of the language.
You won't regret it –and, if you are a catholic, you know the rite, so you can follow it quite easy. If you are not, just be there, respectfully, and live the experience.
Ah, and welcome to Mexico!
la entrada al recinto es gratuita?
Alfonso T
Queretaro City, Mexico20 contributions
Si la entrada es gratuita, solamente si quieres entrar a las catacumbas (parte inferior de la catedral) hay horarios establecidos y tambien ver que no haya trabajos de reparacion y mantenimiento.
Saludos
