We visited the Shark Laboratary on Bimini south. Worth a visit here and the staff and volunteers made us welcome and shown us a lemon baby shark and nurse shark. They explained their work and lots of intersting information regarding the lab, sharks and ocean conservation. The actual lab was a little dissappoining an old wooden hut but did not spoil the experience. If in Bimini visit the lab on one of the tours which you have to book.

This was a great experience for our kids (who have missed this week of school) and for the adults. Thank you, Chessa for a thorough tour and experience with the nurse and lemon shark. I hope we get to Skype with you in the future and learn more.

Thanks to Cat and Star who took us and showed us around. Their knowledge and passion for what they do makes this experience! We saw a baby nurse shark who was adorable and it was so interesting to learn new facts about these fascinating animals. Must visit if you’re in Bimini. It’s a free tour but donations are accepted.

Just did an tour and education visit to the Shark Lab. Chessa was our host and she not only knows her facts but was happy to share them with the rest of us in terms we could understand. It helped each of us to understand the importance of sharks to our healthy life and the life of the ocean. She helped dispel many of the "killer shark" myths made so popular by movies like "Jaws" and SharkNato".
It was fascinating to see how marine science is actually done. No fancy boats or 5 star accommodations as often seen on "Shark Week", simple (bare bones) living for a group of dedicated research scientist making advances to our understanding daily.
Plan on spending a couple of hours learning, getting your feet wet and meeting these dedicated researchers and their Juvenal charges.
Lemon sharks are their specialty but they also are studying Nurse and Great Hammer heads
I suggest calling in advance as they only offer tours as the tides and research allows.
Please leave them with a donation to continue their work.

The Shark Lab is primarily a research center that also has a visitor component available. There is an area for for baby sharks were visitors can touch or hold baby Lemmon sharks and nurse sharks. Stingrays are also available to interact with.
Your support of this faculty goes to a great cause, but it’s not easy to get to. The area is relatively undeveloped (thus making it great for sharks), but part of the research is looking for a way for sharks and shark enthusiast tourists to co-exist.
There are dive companies in the area if you want to swim with the Mama’s and the Papa’s after admiring this eco-friendly research lab. They have kids programs on the web and for visits!
Look it up and enjoy it while you are in The Bahamas!

We returned from a December Research Experience with All the Wonderful Volunteers/Staff/Principal Investigators/Scientists/Fellow RE's!!!! We cannot say enough about everyone and the wonderful insights and hands-on experiences.
There are many Sharks and Rays to learn about and enjoy in their protected waters of Bimini. We were fortunate to learn about current research projects on Hammerheads and Lemon sharks from the principal investigators. Each day was filled with shark activities in the field, snorkeling with sharks, conversing (laughing a lot) with lab folks, learning shark facts and MORE. We were in awe of Staff and Volunteers that make it all work at the research field station.
We appreciate all that is being done for Bimini conservation and awareness. This was an overall great experience!

The Sharklab is now located on South Bimini which requires a ferry ride from North Bimini where most lodging is located.

Does the shark lab breed sharks in captivity? Also are the sharks released after the experiment is over?

I know that they are caught at a nursery on South Bimini’s waters after sharks come to breed. They are only kept for two weeks, and then released back into the water.
