I have been on fishing adventures with about 10 different guides around the country, and the best experience so far was with Captain Kris in the Bahamas in a day that my wife and I will forever refer to as First Cast Magic!
Lets start with one of the things that gave me the most angst, sometimes it can be “difficult” to cast in front of a guide, someone who does this all the time and is a pro, and while I’m not a novice fly-fisherman, being from Kansas, I don’t get to fly fish often, and it had been 2 years since I’ve been able to meaningfully toss a fly. So I was worried I’d look like a rusty dum-dum in front of the guide. The first thing Kris did was to park the boat out of the prime fishing spot so I could do some warmup casts, and I quickly came to realize he is the most positive and reassuring guide I’ve ever been with. I’ve had guides who were up cranky-curmudgeons, but Kris instantly started with the positivity and after a few quick tips I was casting like I fly fish every weekend.
After about 10 warm up casts Kris pulled the boat into the section we wanted to drift, cast over there he said and pointed to the right of the boat, as I laid the fly down he yelled “there goes a school” and I quickly picked the fly up and launched it to where he pointed and BAM fish on! I had hooked a larger bonefish that took us for quite a run, and he gave me timely and helpful tips to land the fish. I swear I think Kris was more excited than I was!
We cast around the area for a little while more, but as Kris said, that first fish was a big one from the front of the pack, and it’s likely the school went deeper, so there wasn’t much use to spend more time in the area, I appreciate it when a guide is willing to move on to catch fish instead of taking the easy way of staying where we were. We went for a quick ride to a nearby island to a place called the Donut, a circular run of shallow water, when we pulled in we saw another guide who alerted us that there was a massive school of bone fish in the Donut who were being chased by a monster barracuda and weren’t biting. The other guide had been there 2 hours with no bites. Within a minute our boat was surrounded by thousands of bonefish, and heck, were here, lets cast, sure enough, the second my fly touched down the school scattered. We cast a few more times, but mostly we just sat there admiring the huge school of fish. Again, Kris seemed so excited, we NEVER see this he said. But lets go catch fish and not sit here for 2 hours like those guys, so we loaded up and left, again, very glad I’m not wasting my precious fishing time casting where there are no fish or where the fish aren’t biting.
We quickly went to a nearby channel and spent an hour or so catching small strawberry grouper (again, more first cast catch!) on rod and reel, it was fun, but clear after trying 2 or 3 areas that the grouper were going to get to our bait before anything else, and we wanted something to cook for a shore lunch. So we went to another area with some sunken cars. Got a very strong hit on my first cast within seconds, but I wasn’t able to land it, but by now, I fully trusted everything thing Kris told me and where he took me. We fished here for about another hour, at one point, my wife hooked into something quite large, and we all got excited to see what could possibly be doubling over the rod, IT’S A SHARK yelled Kris, holy cow, We never see sharks over here! Sure enough my wife hauled in a 7ft nurse shark weight about 150lbs or more. Not something to eat for lunch, Kris handed me fresh bait and said, there are 3 different fish here we can catch that are great for lunch, go get one! A few minutes later I got a hard hit and after a good fight reeled in a gorgeous Mutton Snapper, Kris was stoked, this is one of the 3 fish I wanted you to catch for lunch! Lets go eat! So we pulled up the anchor and headed over to a nearby beach bar, but on our way, we spotted a dolphin with her baby, and Kris pulled over so we could watch them swim around. WOW, we NEVER see dolphins over here, this day is CRAZY! Kris exclaimed. First cast fish, dolphins, the largest school of bonefish ever, a big shark, this day is crazy!
At the beach bar, Kris filleted my catch and had them cook it up for lunch, it was so good! from ocean to plate in 45 minutes! After lunch and a rest, Kris took us to a nearby spot where we spent some time snorkeling with sea turtles, they were everywhere, so cool! At this point, we had about 1.5 hours left and we wanted to try our luck one last time for big fish, so we went out to deeper water and Kris had save the rib meat of the snapper to use as big bait for a big fish. We got lots of hits, but nothing big enough to eat our bait, and worn from such an exiting day, I told Kris its time to load up and go. Wow, 8hrs of the most fun.
My wife and I, we travel a lot, and we both agree this is THE highlight from this vacation, and one of our all time most fun days ever, and we both were so thankful to have Captain Kris along with us that day to take us from one adventure to the next, so positive, relaxing, and fun! We are certainly coming back, but this time, for more than just 1 day of fishing!

had a great day out with Fly Fishing Nassau for sure! Our guide was a real conservationist who respected the area and locked is into to an area with an amazing amount of Bone Fish! We had schools of 8-10 of them swimming around us for a solid two hours and it was some excited fishing!!! We did a wading trip where we toured around the island in a razor AWD vehicle, which was a great way to see the island.

Bring closed toed shoes and long pants and lots of water and food! We fished for 6 hours!!!

What a memorable day. Changed up Captain Kris’s typical outing and he was MORE than accommodating. I learned so much as we fly fished for bonefish, caught numerous varieties of fish while inshore fishing and even took some time to deep sea fish.

Kris is punctual, patient, and down right a phenomenal individual. His conservation minded approach to preserving the fisheries and environment was great to see.

His equipment is top notch and you won’t be disappointed with his expertise. I highly recommend an outing with Kris and cannot wait to fish with him againnext year!
