About
Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

Disappointed that not all shops open. Cobblestones tough to walk on so good shoes a must! Went during the day so night might have more going on.

if your willing to pay $30 usd just to get into the compound then you should stop here for a photo op. but the area while pretty doesn’t offer much. the ampqthwter might be fun for a show/ concert though. otherwise a bunch of gift shops. not many people a bit dull. but pretty

To my delight, this was incredible! I was skeptical of the mere concept of this place, but it won me over the moment we rolled our 21st-century golf cart onto the cobblestones at the entrance. This place is especially stunning at sunset and by night.

I am a little confused by the older reviews here. We went on a trip to Altos de Chavon with Bayahibe Fishing Centre (great company). The boatman dropped us off at the bottom of a flight of steps, and my friend and I simply climbed up to the village. There was a nice security lady at the top who said we had to pay an entry fee, which we happily did. Simples.

My friend loves taking photos and this village is incredibly photogenic. It reminded us a bit of Portmeirion in North Wales! Beautiful buildings, squares, cafes and vistas over the river. Lots of nooks and crannies, and the shops are lovely too. We hadn’t left enough time to explore and were very disappointed to have to head back to the boat.

You need at least two hours there …. Longer if you want to enjoy a coffee, a meal or a proper look at the shops. It’s a great trip out, as a real change from the beaches, lovely though they are.

While we were at the Dreams Dominicus La Romana we had planned to visit Altos de Chavon. We learned at the hotel that you cannot go there unless you have a special permit. One of the travel companies there helped us by booking a private taxi to take us to the site for around 100$ US (including the tickets). Altos de Chavon is a replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village and was built in 1982. That said, the views of the river are breathtaking and seeing those birds flying above it was amazing. The site also has a museum (no charge), a small hotel, a church, shops, cafes, restaurants and some local vendors. There is even a donkey if you want to take souvenir pics. The amphitheatre was also nice to visit. We had a delightful day and there were very few tourists which made it an enjoyable experience.

Highly Recommended!

wish I was still there; takes my breath away just thinking about it - immaculate professional friendly and accommodating; always greeted with a smile - rooms fully supplied. Jabnia Guerrero amazing wedding planner concierge, Miguel Gonzalez - pleasant, professional so welcoming… it was a place you never wanted to leave. want to thank and mention Melfis Manzanillo front desk, Emmanuel taking care of luggage and transportation and Melvin, mixing the best Coco Chanel! With my whole heart and soul I want to go back to Casa de Campo. Servers at restaurants knew our names and treated us like royalty; they were genuinely happy to have us as their guests. The entire staff, every last one of them were great - especially Domingo and Junior felt like they were our friends. If you saw the photos, you would know exactly what I mean.. too much to say in a little paragraph.
