Fishing with Rainy Lake Guide, Rich!
Jul 2021
My husband wanted to fish for just a couple of hours so he called around and found must guides to be booked. The great thing was that they all support each other, so someone suggested Rich (from Patriot Outdoors.) He's retired military and a super cool guy and agreed to take us out for 2 hours after his day trips were done.

It was amazing! I went along to photograph! We caught 2 nice sized northern pikes and several very small walleyes! Missed the photo of the bald eagle they flew just over us...dang!

Rainy Lake Cruise
Jul 2021
We took the Rainy Lake cruise through the National Park service. Our tour guide was awesome and full of energy which was good because Voyageurs isn't the most exciting park. The scenery is beautiful and we saw lots of birds... multiple bald eagles which was cool... but there isn't much that's awe-inspiring here. We're glad to have taken the cruise and we got another NP crossed off our list but I think this was a one-and-done stop for us.

Beautiful lake
Jun 2021
A beautiful lake with lots of access and great fishing. Mind the navigation channels and markers, and be mindful that many of the routes will wind you through Canada waters. Beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife.

Huge lake
Aug 2020 • Friends
These lakes are incredibly large. You can just rent a boat and cruise around all day. The waters are calm the buoys make it easy to navigate.

Largest Visitor Center
Sep 2019
Of the three visitor's center, this one was the largest in terms of displays/theater area/parking/etc. They are set up to handle larger crowds. Had we been there on the right day, we would have liked to have done the Grand Tour...but unfortunately, we were not. Our trip earlier in the day to Kettle Falls had been cancelled due to winds...they said that the Grand Tour boat is almost never cancelled because for winds, the style of boat is much better off than a pontoon (which is on Lake Kabetogama).

They need more tour capacity
Sep 2019 • Couples
We decided to visit this park at the last minute while on our way to Montana. The visitor center is nice and the rangers are helpful but they run very few tour boats and the tour boats are really the only way to see the park. We are here in September and even now with relatively few people there we were unable to see the park. Hopefully in the future with better advance planning on our part we might be able to come here and do more than get our passport book stamped.

Rainy Lake Houseboats
Sep 2019 • Couples
If I could give this company a negative 5 I would. We rented a houseboat over the labor day weekend. The cost was over $750 a day. The boat was a DUMP. The boat looked like it was 50+ years old and had NEVER been maintained. There were big grease stains on the carpet. The sleeper sofa was disgusting at best. All the sleeping areas were open to the entire boat. No privacy dividers or curtains. The cupboards were badly chipped, the pots and pans inadequate. The screens kept popping off the windows and were hard to get back in. Towels for kitchen were old and tattered. No sheets for beds...you had to order those as extras. The water pump gave out that night and we had no water to brush our teeth or flush toilet. We were told by owner that because we had the lights on the boat we wore down the battery. Evidently we were supposed to sit in the dark or go to bed at 8 pm!!!! The owner told us if we switched to the other battery we would wear that one down too and the water pump would stop again. The owner kept trying to insist we did something wrong even though we had read the manual front to back and followed instructions exactly. The owner flatly said he would NOT come down and help us. We decided we couldn't stay on the boat and found accommodations in international falls. The next morning they refunded our money but got no apologies from the owner or his wife. This was an unbelievably horrible experience. The only positive to the entire debaucle is that the staff obviously felt bad and they helped us re-pack our cars and expressed sympathy. I don't know how this company has gotten any positive reviews at all. BEWARE!!

Nice Park
Aug 2019
The Rainy Lake Visitor Center is a very nice place for an introduction to Voyageurs National Park. There are a couple of short trails near the visitor center and boat tours leave from the dock behind the center (we took the Grand Tour of Rainy Lake about 2 1/2 hours). Good educational displays inside and tables for having a picnic are out back. My grandkids had a great time with the Junior Ranger program. There is a small gift shop.

Lots of animals on display especially considering the exhibit area.
Aug 2019 • Couples
After staying at Kettle River hotel over the weekend we drove up to Rainy Lake Visitor’s Center before heading up to Canada. Huge moose and a nice exhibit with great use of the space it had. Lots of different animals on display along with about 7 different skins to touch. The canoe is impressive and is only medium size!!! Clean indoor bathrooms and a short little trail to a birch paper teepee. Had already seen the 2 films at the other visitor center but they were worth watching. The boat tour is supposed to be fantastic so will plan to do that next time. Onto see the Smokey Bear statue (about 10-15 minutes away).

3 night Rainy Lake stay on houseboat
Jun 2019 • Couples
Four of my family members and I rented a houseboat at Rainy Lake marina so we could stay at one of the national park campsites for 3 nights. Along with the 52' houseboat we towed a 16' base boat for fishing and sightseeing. First night and day out we experienced some rainy weather along with cool temperatures, but this didn't keep us from enjoying the fishing and remoteness of the park. Second day the weather cleared and by the third day we experienced some of the finest conditions I have ever seen on a lake.

The fishing was fabulous - pike and small mouth bass and two fish feasts for suppers. Loons calling everywhere, eagles and sea gulls soaring overhead along with splendid sunsets and mirror reflecting lake water made for an awesome trip. Glad we brought insect repellent because mosquitos/lake flies did come on with a vengeance after dark. I can highly recommend renting a houseboat, bass boat and docking them at a beach campsite called Kawawia Bay West. If you enjoy remoteness, nature, boating, and fishing then this is the lake for you.
