Small venue stand-up comedy acts, with both Japanese and expat comedians of high quality. Laughed my gentle plums off, I did! But you should RSVP and get there a bit before, to catch the opening. The toastmaster (or whatever it's called) was hilarious, as was the comics. English-speaking with both Japanese culture perspectives as well as tourist-related.

Osaka is famous for comedy in Japan but it's tough to find a venue for English-speaker, so I very much appreciate ROR for providing that option. The open mic nights are a fun way to sample local talent, even though the expat comics tend to outnumber the Japanese ones. Still, as a venue for English-language comedy it did enable me to see an actual professional stand-up comic who was visiting from the UK so that was terrific.
The biggest problem with ROR is the space itself: very cramped. It's a basement. There are no tables or even proper chairs: I was sitting on a tiny stool among a crowd of other stools. This limits you to one drink at a time and it's difficult to get another when you're packed in as an audience. Still, with no alternatives, I'll be back someday.

Open mic night was amazing, the guys' acts were hilarious despite this night being somewhat of a testing ground for new jokes. At ¥500 a head this is more than worth it. Highly highly recommend for English speakers looking for an hour and a bit of great laughs in a wonderful environment.

We spent a great evening full of laughs. The staff and comedians were really nice and welcoming. They engaged the audience well. We loved the show, the ambience, the comedians and everything about this place. We will definitely keep an eye out for their shows every-time we are in Osaka. An evening well-spent, and we’ll definitely come back.

ROR was amazing. We had SUCH a fun little evening and it all started there. The 4 acts we saw there were all brilliant. Very smart and observational comedy. The host is also amazing. Can’t recommend it enough. Drinks and food was also brilliant and very reasonably priced. Finally got some decent vegetarian food which was a massive bonus.

This definitively R-rated, sexually explicit comedy show left me disappointed. Sadly, it was nothing more than a very amateur performance that I could have seen anywhere in the world. If you're a tourist with limited time, definitely skip this one; there are far more uniquely Japanese experiences to be had. The over-the-top rave reviews about this show seem dubious and make me think the comics' buddies are the ones giving this performance such high marks.
For one, I thought the focus of the comedy would be about the amusing cultural differences between Japan and the West, and to the comedians' credit, the scant material that did touch on this was by far the best. But the all-male comedy crew for the most part fell into the tiresome old formula of sophomoric jokes about masturbation, going bald (one poor audience member was actually pointed out for his supposedly thinning hair), some rather dated tech gags, and again... masturbation. Do not go see this with your mother. And yes, some unfortunate guy was actually there with his mother.
I've seen a lot of amateur stand-up comedy and it remains a mystery to me why male self-pleasurement is always a go-to topic. To me, it's not edgy; it's obvious and lazy. And it's been done to death. Note to comics: other things can be funny too. I've seen this so many times that it doesn't even phase me anymore, but I felt genuinely bad for many others who were visibly awkward having to sit through these jokes in the presence of their family, friends and co-workers.
A quick scan of the audience demographics would be a good place to start to avoid offending and alienating the people who have come to watch you. For instance, one of the comedians had a bit about "going down" on Japanese women and how it was difficult due to the elongatedness of female Asian bodies.
Pro Tip: When more than half your audience is female, and Asian, and the joke doesn't get any laughs, maybe nix it from your set. It's not that it was an "offensive" observation per se, it simply wasn't funny. The comic who performed that bit perhaps thought that using self-deprecating humor would balance out the just-under-the-radar female objectification, but for me, it didn't. If you're going to ahem, "go down" that path, it better be worth it.
However, having criticized these seemingly well-meaning comedians to within an inch of their lives, I have to say they have a lot of potential and their sets were fairly tight and mostly funny. Given the setting, it's just unfortunate the show doesn't focus more on the humor inherent in trying to navigate different cultures and the funny misunderstandings that come with it.
Better suited for expats, for just $5 it's still entertaining. Just check your feminist instincts at the door (or better yet, don't applaud the juvenile male buffoonery). And don't attend with anyone you'd be uncomfortable looking in the eye after hearing the word "masturbate" about 100 times.

I lived in Kobe for 4 years and an active Tripadvisor user. For last couple of months I've been very curious why this English Comedy team was the number 1 ranked "to-do" activity in Osaka. For me, if I was travelling to NY, Chicago or LA, the great centers for start-up comics, I would definitely check out a comedy show. However, in Osaka it's not something that I would naturally think to do.
For tourist, it's hard for me to recommend. If you've done everything else and you're looking to have a night on the town, it's not a bad place to start. If you're older and more interested in the taking in city and its culture, maybe not such a great option.
As an Expat, I had a good time. It's cheap and there were some funny moments. I especially liked the bits about Japanese life / culture. Actually, I would of have wished some more on that topic and less about masturbation. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some old conservative man, but when every comic talks about it, it gets a bit tiresome.

I walked in not sure what to expect I was greeted by some lovely ladies who collected the really small fee and offered some drinks .
I sat down, made myself comfortable, made some small talk with the people sitting next to me and the show began. Not long into the show I soon realised why this show is so high on trip advisor, it's one of the funniest shows I've seen (including those comedy shows that we all download online).
Each comedian has there own style, one guy described himself as a comparer, another sang a parody song, another guy has this air about him that, just looking at him makes you laugh. They all come from different western countries (Canada, England, America and they even have a Kiwi). All five were really funny and whether you are a local or a tourist you are going to laugh your face off that much I can guarantee.
Even if comedy is not your thing everyone is really friendly too so it's a great place to meet new people, make new friends and if you are just visiting maybe get some suggestions for other things to do, great local eats/drinks etc, the group actually invited everyone for drinks after the show, if I haven't convinced you by now I never will and that's fine, I just wanted to let everyone know how much fun I had at this show and hope that everyone else can have the same experience.

A selection of hilarious comedians. The show was a real of our time in Osaka. Drinks were well priced and the venue was really well suited to the show!

When in Osaka we ended up goin going to ROR's open mike night in L&L bar. This is a free event held once a month where the ROR comedians try out new material and budding comics can have a go aswell. Considering it was a free event we were surprised with the quality of the show. It was genuinely funny and the comedians were very friendly and welcoming. There was a real mix of people both performing and in the audience(there was actually a three year old running around during the show) The show started around 9 and went on for about two hours. As it is in a bar alcohol and food is available (and reasonably priced) If you happen to be in Osaka you should definately check this out, well worth seeing. If you have any questions you can email them via their website and they will let you know whats going on.

Hi. We will be in Osaka in May 15th. Would love to share a few laughs. Will you have a show that night?
Kota and Terry
Written 18 April 2017
The shows are on every Friday and starting soon, Saturdays as well. Unfortunately it looks like the 15th is a Monday, so there is no show that night, but the bar/restaurant upstairs will be open, and the food and drink there are quite good!
Written 20 April 2017
Also, what nights are the performances and how much does it cost?
Written 4 February 2017
For info on regular perf, guest perf, venues etc you need to follow ROR Comedy web page or their Facebook page.
They have regular performances on Friday nights in Osaka (think its 9 pm at Namba). Prices vary, think its 1000 yen for regular nights, about 2000 yen when they have guest performers (but in this second case you can get a discount for advance purchase)
