Open space is rare in densely-populated Wanhua, which is what makes Nishi Honganji Square interesting.. It has well-groomed lawn, and a Buddhist bell. This was once the site of a Japanese Buddhist temple, which burned down. The bell was recast, and here it is now,

Many secular buildings remain from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) but few religious buildings. Many shrines, such as the site where the Grand Hotel now sits, were demolished and put to other uses. The Xibenyuan Temple was once a monastery. It now has a shelter with a bell. The temple is now in Wanhua, in a square.

Although many important buildings remain from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), most of the remains of Empire are secular, not religious. Xibenyuan is an exception; it includes the remains of a Japanese monastery, plus a Japanese tea house. Xibenyuan is an oasis of quiet in the frenetic Wanhua district. It's well worth a visit if you are seeking some peace and quiet.

Nishi Honganji Square dates from the Japanese colonial period, from 1895 - 1945. The park once hosted a Buddhist temple, which burned down. The temple bell was recast; it is still on site. The park is a modest, though welcome, area of public space in Wanhua, which is a densely populated area of Taipei.

This is the site where Nishi Honganji, a Japanese temple, once stood. The temple was burned in 1970, and now there is only a bell tower. It is a very pleasant small park.

This nice small park luckily has young cherry trees which are still in bloom when I got to visit. The bell tower is reminiscent of the one in Kyoto.
