We did the half-day trek, and enjoyed the chance to get off the beaten track and away from the throng. Our guides were 2 Tibetan women, both very nice but of course could not speak any English. We were promised a trek to a waterfall, but we didn't see any waterfall. Our horses were gentle, sturdy fellows who stopped often for a snack. We made slow progress, but the pretty vistas and tranquility of our surroundings made up for that. At the lunch break one of the horses decided that he'd had enough and went off for a wander. The women had to hunt him down for 20 minutes before we headed back down again. On the whole, a very pleasant though slightly desultory amble through the hills of Jiuzhaigou.

I have no experience riding a horse and I had a great time. Felt safe and had a fantastic views. Be sure to communicate if you have knee pains (as a novice rider did not realize how straps should be adjusted) and felt guides could have been more proactive to ensure body alignment was correct for horse riding. However, not a big deal because the trek was awesome and super special.

We did not stay in Tibetan barley inn, but Lily, the hostess kindly arranged a half day trekking tour for us. We left the inn around 10 o'clock and came back later than 3 o'clock (so it is better to bring some snacks for lunch). On that day only two of us joined the tour.
Our guides were Tibetan girl and her aunt. Although they did not speak English, they were friendly, kind people, we enjoyed communicating with them with a few Chinese words. Their horses were also smart, tolerate, and very safe to ride on.
The scenery was amazing all time. We saw bluff rocky cliffs, rivers of clear water, colorful pretty small flowers among the bush. We took a rest at the base of the mountain and turned back. We could see the line of yaks walking on the high ridge of the mountain. On the way back, we went to see a beautiful waterfall running down the cliff in the forest.
While the Jiuzhaigou national park was full of people, we saw nobody during the trekking. After the tour, we had a little bit aches in our legs and bottoms for a while, but we were really happy with the nice memory.
We thank Lily very much giving us such a wonderful experience!

Great day out. We did the 4 hour tour which was plenty enough for us.

Very friendly guides. They lead your hours the whole way, so great for people who are not confident riders, although a bit slow if you've any riding experience. Beautiful scenery and streamlined experience!

This was the highlight for my daughters of the whole family vacation. This was a wonderful experience for us all. The guides were outstanding. Even going to the extent of making sure the snow was pressed down so my daughters could safely explore the frozen waterfall.

When I first saw that brochure for this trip at the Tibetan Barley Inn, I had no plans to go. I looked at the reviews online nevertheless, and found... 15 5/5 reviews? Could it really be that good?

It is that good. It really, really is. We arranged a half day excursion with the Tibetan Barley Inn, and the next morning we found ourselves bumping up and down in a car up the mountain. As the horses were being readied, we waited inside one of the villagers' houses. Soon enough, it was time to go. We traveled uphill at a slow pace, taking a couple of times for breaks. It had just snowed, and there was a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere. The mountains stretching around us were taller and steeper than anything I had ever seen before.

We reached a final little lookout point after two hours, and stopped. Around us, the valley stretched on, with the road winding into the distance. We took some pictures, and seemed a little overawed by the experience.

The trip down was quite steep, and despite our slow pace I was quiet tired by the end of it. This trail is narrow, steep, and has overhanging branches, but the guides are very knowledgeable and the horses are well trained. I never felt unsafe at any point.

I think I got a lot more out of this experience because I spoke enough Chinese to talk with the guides (who speak Mandarin and Tibetan). They pointed out buildings we passed, and answered whatever I asked. Once, I asked one of them to show us the way that real Tibetans rode horses, and he was happy to oblige, trotting and prancing one of the horses around. At the bottom, one of our group wanted to ride alone (without being held by a guide) for a bit, and they were also happy to let her do this. Overall, this trip is very informal. It's lead by ordinary people, and isn't an adventure with strict rules. If you want to do something different from the plan, the guides are willing to oblige.

This experience was one of the most beautiful and memorable parts of our trip to Sichuan. Everyone goes to see Jiuzhaigou and makes it to see Emeishan... but how many people can say they rode a horse with Tibetans, with their breath frosting in front of them?

Went on a 4-hour trek with 2 friends, we were accompanied by two friendly Tibetan guides who took great care of us and shared many interesting stories about the areas that we passed. It was refreshing being out there by ourselves especially after being subjected to massive crowds at Jiuzhaigou the day before. Initially I was a little worried as I’m usually quite skeptical about how animals are treated in tourism but the horses look healthy and well-fed, and were very well-behaved. The guides treated them with respect and we stopped several times as well for them to drink from the river. The organizer of this activity, Barley Inn, was also very helpful and flexible to our requests. While we did not stay there, we went there for lunch after the trek and the premises were clean and nicely furnished. Highly recommended activity for those who love the outdoors and wish to see it in a more personal way.

It was the most unforgettable horse trekking I have experienced. All the horses are healthy and the guides are very nice. We were lucky enough to see the red autumnal leaves along the road and the snow at the peak of the mountain. Thanks for “Tibetan Barley Inn” to organize such amazing tour and we will be back again!

We did the full day trek. It was well organized, the local Tibetan guides were very helpful and caring. A memorable experience to ride a horse to pass through different landscape and to enjoy the wild. We have barbecue lunch in the wild with the local Tibetan people. The views are just incredible where no other tourist at all, and I can say it’s the pure nature of Jiuzhaigou. The whole trip was very safe because the guides gave us some briefing of how to control the horse. It is definitely one of the best of our trip to Jiuzhaigou! Strongly recommend to anyone who come Jiuzhaigou!

We had organised a 4 day tour with a travel company, however, our guide insisted on bringing us to over crowded touristy areas. On our second evening we started chatting to lily in our hotel, Tibetan barley inn. She suggested we take this day trip instead.. We would be the only tourists horse trekking in this valley that had no name!!
Our guide collected us at 09:30 the following morning.. And indeed, we did not meet another tourist, or in fact another person until we returned to Jiuzhaigou that afternoon!!
Our two guides did not speak English.. But that didn't matter as we seemed to communicate fine!
The scenery was spectacular, serene and peaceful..
I am not an experience rider but felt at my ease and safe with our guides.
They also cooked a yummy bbq for us which was delicious.
I just wish we had longer in Jiuzhaigou to do the 2 day/1 night tour that is also offered as we had such an unexpectedly amazing time!!
