The area around Vamos and Apokoronas is a great place to discover on foot! If you stay in Vamos, you should definitely take a walk in the countryside. With George as your guide, you will “travel through time” in a country walk full of beautiful nature and local history : Byzantine wells, the folklore museum, old churches and chapels, the small gorge that connected the traditional villages Gavalochori, Douliana in the old days and other interesting places.

We booked a private walk with George (the owner and driving force of many activities in Vamos) and we were not disappointed. The walk takes 3 to 4 hours and allows you to enjoy the Cretan countryside, from sheep farming, to olive groves, to an...More

Vamos is not on the tourist trail so remain relatively "unspoiled", though the cafes around the village square are welcoming to all visitors. It is good to sit under the shade of a eucaliptus tree, watch the comings and goings on the square and feel...More

We loved the variety of walks offered in a series of booklets, and enjoyed the countryside so much more walking. There were unexpected views, sleepy villages, quiet valleys and busy beach areas. All in one walk!

I went on this walk with my 82 year old mother and really enjoyed it. It was along paved roads for most of it, with some walking on rougher, steeper areas. I think as long as you have reasonable shoes and are mobile anyone can...More

Three little books with country walks in the Vamos Area on Crete gave us a lot of pleasure on our last holliday. You can get them at the Travel Office of Vamos. Each book describes 8 - 10 pretty easy walks. You'll walk through all...More
