The DFS runs tourist trains on most Sundays during the summer, the journey runs through some of the most exquiste countryside in Bavaria and along the Wiesent valley. There are plenty of stops en route but not much to do at the final destination except get back on the train. We recommend breaking the journey at Gossweinsten and having lunch at the old mill beside the river. The DFS publishes an online timetable, pick a steam special and have a great day out.

This is called Dampfbahn, so why does the steam train hardly run? On the days it does run, where there are 3 return journeys, there is only one engine working, and even then it rarely does all three journeys. I know old steam locomotives can be unreliable, but be prepared to be disappointed if you go here for the steam trains.

The Dampfbahn Fränkische Schweiz has been running since the 80's, it strarts and finishes at Ebermannstadt in Oberfranken and runs along the valley of the Weisent to Behringersmühle, There is not a great deal to see at Behringersmühle, it merely the terminus however all along the line there are excellent places to eat beside the river and the area is a well known (but not overcrowded) local attraction known as Fränkische Schweiz. The name is a nod to the numerous rocky outcrops and cliffs that line the valley. Ebermannstadt is easily accessible as there is a normal railway line from Forcheim which, in turn, is on the Bamberg-Nurnberg mainline. The town is quite busy at the weekend with numerous good restaurants and it is just 40kms north of Nurnberg. The weather is summer is normally quite hot from early June onwards and the railway offers a nice cool alternative to sitting in a stuffy car, you can hop on/off en route just don't miss the last train as it is a 15km walk home. The staff are extremely helpful and the cost of a return is just 12Eu, well worth the outlay.
