We came to Mirandola in February, which is out of season, and we were not able to enter, due to the dangers: In 2012-3, devastating earthquakes nearly destroyed this castle. I wept as we walked its perimeter - there's so much left to do to restore it.
But we could see it is being lovingly worked upon.
We were fortunate to have people show us all that can be seen, and what remains is beautiful. We saw the wing where Giovanni Pico, the philosopher, was born.
Most people in the world do not remember him, yet as I walked around his family castle, the song from the musical Hair, based upon Shakespeare, kept going through my mind:
"What a piece of work is man? How noble in reason...?"
Had there been no Pico, Shakespeare might never have written this speech in Hamlet. It was Giovanni Pico who wrote the Oration Upon the Dignity of Man - the declaration that human life was worthy of celebrating, and that we, among all creatures, can strive for and attain a higher purpose.
In his lifetime, Pico della Mirandola was called by his friends The Phoenix. Sadly, he died at only 31 years old, the victim of poisoning...his murderers wanted to shut down his message.
This castle is a spiritual place of a sort.
Besides Shakespeare, I'm also reminded of a passage from The Little Prince, which says: Important things cannot be seen with the eyes - only with the heart. What you will "see" here will be such a thing of the Heart. It is called "Speranza," Hope.
So visit. It will be an audacious thing to do. And see it with your heart. I feel sure Pico will approve.
