About
Madeira's first and only tiki bar, celebrating the historical link between Madeira and Hawaii. Located in Estreito da Calheta, Pukiki Tiki Bar brings you the biggest selection of rum in Madeira, tiki and classic cocktails. Madeira is known as the Hawaii of Europe. In the late 1800s many Madeirans set sail for Hawaii to work in the growing sugar cane industry. Madeira already had a long history of sugar cane production and a very similar sub-tropical climate to Hawaii which made Madeirans ideal workers for this job. They became known as Pukiki to native Hawaiians and influenced Hawaiian culture in many ways, most famously by introducing the Ukulele (known as machete in Madeira) and malassadas. Pukiki Tiki Bar celebrates the link between the islands. We are passionate about all things tropical, mid-century Polynesian Pop, Tiki cocktails and Rum based drinks made from sugar cane. Join us and share the aloha spirit!

    Amazing island experience
An amazing place to enjoy an easygoing island atmosphere and delicious cocktails. The owners made me feel very welcome and shared fascinating stories about the history of both the building and two islands far apart but similar in some ways. Make sure to pop by on your travels around Madeira!

    A hidden gem
This was such a fun visit. The vibe was better than being in Hawaii. The cocktails were to die for. Also our chihuahua felt immediately at home. So friendly, highly recommended! Hope to come back one day!

Probably one of the best cocktail bars in the world!
Where do I start? The bar itself looks like a movie scene you would expect on a tropical island in the Pacific in the 1950s-60s (Madeira has always had strong links with Hawaii. Madeirans who went to work there had 'Pukiki' as nickname). Every little detail is a testament to the love, dedication and resilience that was put into turning the original derelict stone structure into the stunning place it is today (the toilet area has a display of 'before' pictures). There's a spacious ocean view terrace on the first floor and a seating area around the ground floor bar level. The cocktail menu contains a few 'usual suspects' for the less adventurous guests as well as modern twists on well known classics, but the vast majority are original creations . And they are as delicious as beautifully presented. Expect nothing but fresh ingredients (nothing is prefab, including the grenadines and juices) in liquid works of art, with quite a few available 'virgin' style. Each cocktail is presented in its own mug/cup/glass with matching decorations. If you like rum, there's a wide arrange of special Madeiran and international rums. But most importantly: Carla and Martin are the loveliest couple you'll ever meet, Charming, witty, friendly hosts who will go out of your way to make you feel at home. And if you need any more coziness, just wait until house mascot-cat "Mai Tai" comes for a cuddle. But you may be too busy trying your luck on the Ukelele that hangs on the wall for guests to play on. I've been to many a cocktail in my time, but this one tops them all. Voted one of the best Tiki bars internationally, apparently visitors from far and away come especially to Madeira to visit Pukiki. And I get it completely.

An outstanding find in an unusual location!
What an absolute find and treasure this place is. A local friend recommended it, and it didn't disappoint. The place is beautifully and authentically decorated, the couple who own and run it were friendly, accommodating and clearly passionate about what they've created. You won't get your 'normal' cocktails here, like Mojito or Pornstar Martinis, but what they do have, are innovative, delicious and fun cocktails (soft drinks are also available!) I can highly recommend this venue for couples and groups alike.
    Thank you so much! ☺️🌺🍹

    Must do in Madeira
Definitely worth stopping by if you enjoy a delicious cocktail with a great view! Surprisingly diverse cocktails with traditional rum/gin from Madeira. It’s sad we came here by car so I couldn’t drink more cocktails :’)

    Tiki bar, nightlife Calheta
Everything is great! The view is wonderful from the rooftop terrace. The indoor space is full of cool tiki memorabilia, which also highlights the families connection to the tiki culture. The service went above and beyond… they were attentive and prompt, They even provided us with transportation and offered us local recommendations. But we didn’t come for just the amazing atmosphere ( including the bar cat ) we came for the drinks!! And the drinks did not disappoint. All the drinks are delicious, they use lots of local rums. They serve classics and original drinks and all of them were fantastic!

Someone did some serious research into these cocktails!
Lets not beat around the bush. This is a cocktail bar. They dont serve coffee, poncha or other stuff that doesnt belong in a cocktail bar. As i mention in the title it seems the local bartender did a mixology study and stuck a lot of hours into refining the cocktails to perfection. We tried most of them and they are absolutely wonderful. The bar looks out over the ocean from a bit higher up the mountain so you have quite the view. You get a small bowl of corn bites with your cocktails which are nice but, personally, as a dutch dude who likes a snack with his drink, i’d love to see just a few food options, just bites nothing big. But i can also imagine why the owners chose not to do this. Nonetheless, its worth a trip to visit!!

Pukiki Tiki bar was something unexpected! We were all amazed by the drinks and owners who told Madeira-Hawaii connection history and showed picture album of how they renovated the building where the bar is located. I was amazed about their ambitions and beautiful outcome. All the decorations, smallest details, glasses, cocktail menu, all is worth a visit! Bar and cocktails 10\10, however owners and their stories more than 10 😊

Martin and Carla were Tiki enthusiasts before they opened their Tiki Bar on the island of Madeira. They have created an authentic bar, a Tiki paradise with gorgeous views. I particularly loved how they have woven the authentic notion of Tiki with Madeira’s history. I was unaware the Madeirans had emigrated to Hawaii in the 1800’s and it was them who introduced the Ukulele to Hawaii. Even better they have integrated some local Madeiran rum into their traditional cocktails. They have a large range of international rums too. They are delicious. Such a lovely welcoming couple, it really is worth a visit. The best Tiki bar I have visited and I have visited a lot!!

Came in with my other half, our son her mother and her mother's partner. After I ordered my drink I was advised that it might not be to my taste so I decided to pick again. It was at this point that the waitress told us I'd have to hurry because she had already sent the order through via her phone which I hadn't realised. So I asked can't she just go to the bar and ask them not to make what I ordered while I have another look at the menu. Only to be told, no it doesn't work like that (I have no idea why, it was a simple request and could have easily been done). So she told me again I needed to hurry so they could change the order, this time with hurry up hand gestures! So because I felt pressured and embarrassed in front of family I picked the first one I laid eyes on. Fortunately the new drink was nice but the experience ruined it for me.

I still don't understand why she couldn't have told the bar staff to only make their drinks and hold off making mine until I had a proper look. It's not very professional to make paying customers feel rushed like that

After exploring around the island, Pukiki Tiki Bar has topped them all. Every cocktail was fresh, crisp, smooth and flourished with exquisite flavours as described.

Professional, friendly and all round really good vibes. Lovely little spot, with every fine detail executed beautifully by the hands of Martin & Carla.

All in all, you won't be disappointed. An evening well spent and delightful memories made :)
