Nice for a stop
Apr 2019 • Couples
This is a nice stop and good if you have kids. Also, it is the start of many hiking trails and a good campground.

Beautiful spot to picnic or start a walk
Jan 2019 • Family
Free parking, plenty of picnic spots and lots of walks nearby. A really lovely place to leave the car and head off into the wilderness. There is a small kids playground too. BBQ grills and clean toilets.

PLEASANT, PINE TREES ENCLOSED, PLAY AREA FOR FAMILIES
Aug 2018 • Couples
This well thought out rest area is perfect for families, with shaded picnic tables, and games, swings for children.
It is also the point of departure for the famous, beautiful but very long hike to the Route of The Volcanoes. Various route sign posts are easy to see and follow from here.

Quiet place among the pines
Aug 2018 • Family
We were driven to this place by curiosity and had no idea what to expect. After a scenic winding road took us along beautiful black lava fields and through pine forests, we found El Pilar, intending to stop for a quick rest, but ending up staying the whole afternoon.
Although we were there in high season, there was hardly anyone in sight and we had the whole place to ourselves to enjoy. There is lots of shade, a nice playground for younger kids, restrooms, and barbecue pits (which were closed because of the high risk of forest fires).
There is also a small campsite which seems to be for free, and you can find the starting points of many undoubtedly nice hikes. We were content to see our kids play in the woods and have a picnic, for which El Pilar is a great place. A completely different landscape from the typical seaside views, which was nice change.

Pared Vieja (El Pilar) - Refuge of Peace
Sep 2017 • Couples
El Pilar and the routes to it are stunning. There are lookout points into volcanic rims and down to the Eastern coast, and pristine mountain woodland all the way to the top. The recreation area at the summit is sympathetic to nature and sprinkled with simple amenities.

But there is a hidden refuge of greater tranquility to be sought, if you can find it. It is a humble picnic area called Pared Vieja on the Western descent from El Pilar. Take food, drink, and barbecue fuel/equipment as there are couple of large open stone huts for such use along with other thoughtful additions to explore alongside the nearby nature. It seems set up for a large number of people, but most times I've been, we were alone and loving the peace. My favourite spot on an island of abundant breathtaking beauty.

Lovely walk in the woods!
Dec 2017 • Couples
Loads of beautiful walking trails, really well signposted and very easy to follow. There are many purpose built recreation areas with a wide range of facilities. This one at El Pilar has picnic areas, toilets, play facilities for children and even special barbecue areas. Loads of parking spaces so you can dump the car and get some fresh air.

Lost in the cloud
Nov 2017 • Couples
We had planned to go hiking in the mountains around El Pilar but every time we ventured in that direction it was surrounded in rain cloud. So whatever the weather on the coast be prepared for something quite different in the mountains.

Recreational area
Oct 2017 • Family
A camping/bbq/playground area high up in the mountains. It serves as a rest stop for hikers and Sunday resort for local families.
To visit El pilar solely is pointless.
It has to be put in context

Ideal picnic spot
Oct 2017 • Friends
Refuge from the heat - but take a jacket in case the haar blows in. Pine scented air, with goldcrest singing from the canopy. Pine needles underfoot. There is camping with showers and toilets. Lovely to wander through the trees

Delightful, shady picnic spot with access to mountain walks
Jun 2017 • Couples
Stopped here en route from El Paso to Santa Cruz. I don't really recommend approaching from the West, as the road is a but tight at times. Approaching from East (Santa Cruz) is much easier.
The area has a number of well maintained and shady barbecue points, clean toilets, an adventure playground with zip slide etc., lots of shady car parking spaces and a food van with a good range of well priced snacks and drinks.
It is also close to (500 metres) the AcroPark, where kids can climb trees and bridges between trees.
For keen hikers, there is access to the Ruta de Los Volcanos (about 17 km). You can get a local bus at either end of the walk.
