Stunning resort in a perfect mountain setting. Power soft snow and world class facilities. Free 2-hr shuttle from near Sapporo Station. Lots of other stuff to do if you dont want to ski with many restaurants for dining, from inexpensive food courts to fine dining. Try the onsen which has indoor and outdoor sections. Voted best Ski Resort in Japan 3 years running and truly deserved.

Went to the resort for a Conference and to Ski. Fantastic.
Stayed at the Westin Resort Hotel - very good facilities and service, Skiing was superb even though the snow was down a meter on normal and little powder. Trails were great, including some over 3km runs. Chairlifts and gondolas plenty and overall not too busy. Food occasionally average out on the ski field.

They went the extra mile to make sure that if things didn't go to plan, they made up for it - one lift wasn't working to get to the start of the mountain, so they provided buses door to door.

Would definitely return.

Of the two Marriott / Starwood ski resort properties in Hokkaido, this is the one I'll be coming back to.

Lots of choices for food and skiing.

For first time visitors with young families, there's more to do on the Rusutsu Resort side ( with ski school ). The facilities and lifts also feel newer on this side.

The Westin side is for hardcore skiiers.

We hired a full package of elite skis boots & poles from from the exclusive Salomon ski hire to be told that the helmet hire is excluded and not part of the package.

We were then blown away to be told that hire costs for the helmets are more expensive than buying them !

We were forced to buy helmets. We did not bring our own from home due to their bulky size.

We have skied in other resorts in Japan where for safety reasons the helmets are free. In other parts of the world the helmet hire fee is nominal.

This is a rip off and must be stopped. Rusutsu has more expensive lift fees, ski
Hire and outrageously exorbitant helmet hire.

Demonstrate your displeasure by waving your helmet at the Salomon Shop.

I have been visiting Rusutsu Ski Resort for 8 winter seasons and it was the first time I saw skis and boards lined up on the steps to the Main Gondola. What gives these people the right to leave their skis and boards and go into the lodge while the other ski enthusiasts wait patiently in the cold. Disturbing! I hope the ski resort would look into this selfish acts and do something about it. What a put off! On powder days, we are all equal, first come first serve and you have the earn the powder... come on people!!!

Hooded chairs lifts (they make a huge difference when it's cold!!) , gorgeous Christmas trees and sceneries, wide ski/snowboard areas, great for all levels! A must in Niseko!

Skiing in Japan is always better than Europe or N.America, if only for the lack of 30 minute lines for lifts. Add to that the amazing powder snow and it's a boarders paradise.

Rusutsu is among the best for all of the above. If you like riding backcountry, and want to avoid the crowds in Niseko, come here.

This is the alternative to Nisekko if you want to avoid westerners (particularly Aussies). I loved the variety in the terrain and the off piste power (we were lucky to catch all that powder in early February). Next time I'd stay here around 5 days or so and have the opportunity to catch those magnificent Japow days. Quite accessible from Jokanzei (about an hour's drive there and back) if you don't want to stay in the characterless resort town itself. Powderhounds rates Rusutsu as the best overall Japanese resort.

Best part was since multiple mountains the crowds are spread out. Overall still the ski runs are not busy! Lifts also not busy. Plenty of options and places to ski through the trees. Really a good place for intermediate skiers.

Groomed ski runs are well prepared each night. Even with no recent fresh snow.

Food options at cafeteria on mountains could be improved on healthy and more food options and snacks.

The ski lifts are not sized for taller western people so be careful of head when lift hatches close!

Resort area is really a ski place without shopping and night life of some ski resorts.

I do recommend the ski resort just be aware of the above points.

Attended this resort for a work conference but also spent a lot of time snowboarding.
Snow is absolutely amazing in Feb. The hotel itself is pretty average. The rooms are small- we had a three person room with an extra sofa bed and the sofa bed was terrible. We asked for a futon mattress to go over the top which helped but our friends in the next room asked for the same and they didn’t have any extras. They need to upgrade those sofa beds if they expect people to sleep on them.
Breakfast was yummy. Lots of dinner options. 7/11 just down the road. Cute little bars and restaurants just around the corner. Easy ski and snowboard hire facilities. Close to niseko.
Don’t book your flight to leave in the morning as the buses don’t get to the airport until 1130am.
We had fun but I’d probably opt for a cheaper hotel option in the area next time.
