Fantastic sprawling market selling all kinds of stuff. French traders' prices are a little higher than those of Spanish traders. Snaffle up a bargain on the perishables around 1-2pm when the market is clearing away. On the edge of the market is an intriguing antique shop that is well worth a look (reminds one very much of what we Brits call a 'Junk Shop'). Had an exceptional meal for the money at Lapart Des Anges, just off the market @ 19.80 euros for the 3 courses, with a choice of 3 items for each course. Winner!

Visited by recommendation on Monday when the market is on. Lots of wonderful stalls to buy local fresh produce, bakery goods, wine and everything else from clothing, jewellery and crafts. Spent an hour people watching sat in the shade of the arcades whilst sipping a cool drink. Bought some local art work and chatted to the artist. Loved the buskers making the whole trip feel fun and friendly. Well worth a visit if you are in the area - with or without the market!

For all those enjoying a holiday in this part of France I can't recommend Mirepoix enough. Beautiful Medieval buildings plus the wooden carvings on the Maison des Consuls in the square are amazing. If you are self catering the produce in the market is fantastic. Plenty of good cafes and restaurants too.Market held each Monday 9 til 1

We stayed in Mirepoix recently for the third time. Both previous times we stayed on a Sunday night before the market on Monday morning. I have been told that it is the oldest market in France. Certainly it is a very large and spectacular one. The highlight is the large squares with fantastic broad timbered arcades which support, on very large old beams, half timbered houses painted in pastel shades. It is even possible to stay in the 14th century Maison des Consuls which has been converted into an upmarket hotel. The beams that support the building are decorated with over 100 carved wooden heads. The Rough Guide describes Mirepox’s main market square as ‘arguably the most beautiful town square west of the Rhone’ and it is hard to disagree with this. Even at the beginning of November, when other places frequented by tourists have shut up shop, Mirepoix was still alive, perhaps in part due to the large expatriate community of different nationalities which seems to live here. There were some nice bars and cafes and the excellent alternative Indian restaurant run by a quirky Frech guy, La Cardamone. We will return to Mirepoix. It is almost equidistant between Carcassone and Montsegur so it is quite convenient for the beautiful and historic area just north of the Pyrenees.

Mirepoix has one of the biggest markets in the region and is held on a Saturday. The food selection is awesome with so much local produce and a great range of French cheeses and breads. There is also many stalls with clothes and plants and flowers. It covers the whole square and spills out into the surrounding street. There is also plenty of local crafts. You could have even bought live chickens. Mirepoix is a medievil town with so much history you could spend 2 days there. The old buildings fronting the square date back hundreds of years. If you are staying anywhere near Mirepoix make sure you add a visit to your itinerary.

Last Sunday we went to this town in search of late afternoon luch but we got more than we bargained for! The drive from Limoux was really nice and pleasant with stunning views which is by no mean exclusive to this corner of Ladgudoc region and some beautiful sunflower fields to go through. The medieval square is one of the best I have seen and very pretty in short not to be missed if visiting this part of Frace.

Mirepoix is a lovely medieval town, located conveniently between the Canal du Midi and the Pyrenees. We spent a week there and wished it could have been longer as there is so much to do in the area, whether it be visits to the Cathar citadels, walks up the hills, wine-tasting, visits to the caves or just soaking up the summer sun. There was a four-day festival taking place during our visit and the atmosphere in the couverts area of town was lovely. Do not miss the Monday market!

Mirepoix has a wonderful village square lined with a wide range of shops and restaurants. The architecture is unusual and colorful.
We were there during a Village Fête which added to the fun.
The village is also well located for traveling to other places in the area as it is only 1 hour from Toulouse and just over an hour to the Mediterranean.
I was pleasantly surprised as we chose it for the hotel.
We were also fortunate to be there during sunflower season which is breathtaking! We just missed the market which is on Monday's until 1 pm.

Stumbled upon Mirepoix by chance en route to Marseille. Obviously a tourist haven but understandably so. We visited early in the spring so this was a good time; no crowds. Many places to sit in the sun and soak up the atmosphere and admire the beautifully preserved buildings which other reviewers have quite rightly highlighted. On our list of places to return to and spend more time discovering.

If you're going to Mirepoix then try to go on a Monday morning to take in the market at the same time. You'll be able to buy local produce and enjoy a cup of coffee in the old medieval square. Don't forget to take a peek in the church which is typical of the region. If you're interested they have some church services in English as there are a lot of English people who live in the region.
If you're there ine the summer then go to the tourist office in the square to find out about all the activities going on in Mirepoix. they have a variety of markets in the summer including a great pottery fair and regular brocantes ( french equivalent of car boot sales)if you fancy picking up some french bric-a-brac.
NB: disabled parking in the church car park
