A great big 'WOW' is all I can say about this place, and to think we only moored here because nearby Ranworth Staithe moorings were full.

You can walk to this but I believe the footpath is currently closed (check website), but we were on one of the many hire boats for a weeks holiday; actually there were three boats full of friends and family, and fortunately the entrance to Cockshoot Broad off the River Bure has been modified with fantastic moorings for 10 or more craft...and what's more, its free!

Amongst our party were bird watchers and the extensive board walk turned out to be way better than that at Ranworth, and Cockshoot backs onto that land. When we arrived we walked on mass along the board walk which at one stage separates into a loop. On Cockshoot Broad itself, the boardwalk comes back together and there is a good sized bird hide giving great views across the scenery and water.

However, just as dusk started to fall, myself and my two teenage girls decided to walk the boardwalk again and we were gifted by a spectacular display of four Otters playing along the wide dyke that makes up the entrance to the broad. Unfortunately, we remained that still and quiet so as not to disturb them that no photos were taken although one large Otter did swim up to where we was standing, came within a meter of us and just froze staring up at us. I then whispered to one of my daughters to get a photo and as she lifted the camera to turn it on, this big Otter proceeded to effectively 'bark' at us and somewhat growl before disappearing under the water.

We withdrew quietly, got back to our boats, gathered the rest of the crew and tried to spot them again, but alas they were nowhere to be seen. So, following morning a small hardened group of us were up and out at 04:30am and into the bird hide for what we hoped would be a great dawn for spotting all sorts. And we did, just not the Otters.

Chinese Water Deer, many other birds, constant cries of Bitterns but none sighted, and fond memories of our short stay overnight. This is a great place to visit and if your on a boat, a great overnight stop...but there are no amenities or shops or takeaways here.

Finally, other than getting on or off the boat, the entire well built, very modern and wide boardwalk is step free, even into the bird hide which has an area for those in Wheelchairs. A lot of money has been spent on the moorings and the boardwalk itself so if you do use this place please remember its not a children's play area. Step off the boardwalk and you will get wet. And don't be stupid enough to leave rubbish behind either. There are no rubbish bins across this site or at the moorings.
