Maglič and Kraljevo are both magic. Maglič is one of the best restaurated fortresses in Serbia. Maybe with somewhat too much attention for light shows. But certainly it you will have much fun in visiting this fortress. If you like history but also if you want to enjoy a beautiful panorama of the hills and the river Ibar.
Kraljevo has a lot more to offer. Just 5 km away from Kraljevo you have to visit the famous monastery of Žiča with the astonishing red colour. The frescos of the 13th century have been lost, but there are frescos of the 14th century. They belong to the cultural inheritage of Serbia.
From Kraljevo and especially from Maglič it is only 15 km on the road to Novi Pazar to Stedenica, the most famous monastery of Serbia.
In the past 7 kings were crowned in Kraljevo so by this you can understand that there are several historical attractions in the neighbourhood of Kraljevo.
So if you are going to the mountain resorts in Kopaonik, Golija or Zlatibor, you should not forget to visit some of the historical and cultural inheritage. Maglič is magical and by this it is easy to accept you have to walk for about 45 minutes to reach the fortress. Already during this walk you can enjoy the nature and the panoramas. From the fortress just look to the Ibar. Not only on bright days but sometimes even more on cloudy days you will see the magic.
To show the beauty of Maglič we show you besides our own pictures also the pictures of Bojan Milović and Denis Antic.

Maglic fortress is a must see if traveling nearby!
There are built pedestrian bridge over Ibar river and path all the way up to the fortress. Entry is free of charge and there are no working hours, so one might climb up in the evening. Although there is no special content inside the walls, visitors can still climb the stairs and walk on the walls and admire the construction of the fortress, as well as a beautiful nature surrounding it.
Tip for the visitors:
if you choose navigation over google maps (like I did), pay attention that it will not lead you to the pedestrian bridge! In order to climb the fortress, you need to cross the river over that bridge which is situated 1 KM further (direction to Novi Pazar). You will find a restaurant on the right side and this is where you can park your car and go over the bridge.

The position of this magnificent castle allows you to have a breathtaking view of the amazing Ibar valley. Since the castle was recently renovated, you can easily climb the walls of the castle and enjoy the magic view of the natural surroundings. Even though you need to climb at least 20 minutes until you get to the top of the hill, where the Maglič Fortress stands, it is really worth it. You will definitely have a handful of unforgettable impressions!

Maglic Fortress is a very beautiful castle, which you can see from the road between Kraljevo and Usce, in Serbia. In fact, if you park the car on the road, you could walk in a very nice excursion to the fortress. Pitifully, the first bridge is closed, because it is not well preserved, so we could not pass to begin the hikking. Also, the zone is very degraded (too much rubbish on road, broken traffic signals, etc.), so we decided continue our trip to Studenica Monastery. I hope next time the zone will be better.

Hi, we were in Serbia last June 2016 and found a marvellous driver, we highly recommend him.
He took us to Central Serbia on our way to visit different monasteries : Mileseva, Zica and Studenica, we walked up the Maglic Fortress, stunning.Back at this age, we felt like soldiers in action defending the fortress ! .
Gradimir is an excellent, perfectionist guide, driver, joyful and cheerful person. Never tired to drive and to show us all the different beauties of Serbia . His English is fluent. His car is very comfortable.
Gradimir has a profound in depth knowledge of his country Serbia .He knows many different touristical attractions and major other attractions which are not in guide books but are a MUST. And he also knows very cheap places to eat local food and to sleep “local”.

Maglič (Serbian Cyrillic: Маглич [mâɡlitʃ]) is a 13th-century castle about 20 km south of Kraljevo, Serbia. The castle is located atop a hill around which the Ibar river makes a curve, about 100 m above the river. The fortress protected the only road that connected the Great Morava Valley and Kosovo polje. Its name means The Foggy One.Maglič was probably built in the first half of the 13th century by Stephen the First Crowned or his son Urosh I. During the Serbian empire it was the seat of Archbishop Danilo II.This castle was connected with legend about wife of one Serbian king,Despot Đurađ Branković.She was called Irene Kantakouzene(Greek),in Serbia known as Jerina Branković. Irene apparently had a role in its construction; one of the towers of Semderevo is known as Jerinina Kula, "the Tower of Irene", and she is blamed for causing hardship on the inhabitants of the countryside by levying taxes and recruiting forced labor for building the fortress.Upon the death of Đurađ Branković his youngest son Lazar became Despot under her regency. However Lazar swiftly deprived her of all authority and treated her so badly that she tried to escape to the court of Sultan Mehmet II with her stepdaughter Mara and her blind son Gregory. Lazar pursued them, and captured Irene although Mara and Gregory successfully escaped. Irene soon became ill and died on the night of 2–3 May at Rudnik, where she was buried.Near Maglic is a lot of spas and hotels.
For those who love adrenalin tourism, it is supreme experience from the top of the mountains Stolovi, overlooking the Valley of Centuries, fortification Maglic, Mataruska and Bogutovacka Spa, the river Ibar and monasteries Studenica and Zica, It is possible to hire the equipment and get professional help from licensed instructors who are state champions.
From my heart I recommend to visit this location and see by your self .....

You really do not want to attack that hill :) The steep hills up to the castle seems to be an impossible obstacle.

One cannot find in unadulterated climb on 800-year-old structure anywhere in this part of the world. Yet, in Serbia on the side of a small mountain why is this incredible fortress.
According to one of the people in our group before Chris guarded the military paths between where home and Constantinople. The leaders of Serbia at the time were apparently great at making bothRoman Catholic leaders and the Orthodox leaders of the respective churches believe the Serbia was loyal to both of them.
Serbia is a beautiful country, and I would encourage anyone traveling the region to make sure they make of this fortress stop during their stay.

The castle is a landmark in the valley and worth a visit. We had a bit of troubles finding it, because the GPS had wrong data and directed us to the wrong side of the valley. The view was nevertheless magic.

Maglic Fortress is placed on the hill around which Ibar river makes a curve. Fortress protected only road that connected north and south of medieval Serbia. It is located on the road E761. This area is popular for hiking and trekking and also for kayaking and rafting on Ibar river.
