Visit if you intend to buy seafood back to your hotel to eat
Dec 2019 • Family
They don’t have a place for people to eat their purchase there since no cooking is done on site. Their crabs are selling slightly cheaper than surrounding seafood centre, seem to cater more for locaL and not tourist

Seafood market
Feb 2019 • Friends
This market is mainly for selling. Only one or two stores can eat immediate but it will not be hot because they will not reboiled it. You can eat at the restaurant if you want to eat hot food. There is only one restaurant and not so many people during our visit in February.

Good, fresh seafood
Apr 2017 • Couples
I arrived at the Market in late afternoon. The place was not crowded. To me, access is quite difficult. I came to the port by cruise and had to walk for about 40 minutes to reach the Market. I hope it is easier to come from Sakaiminato town centre. The Market or at least the shopping centre is not very large. There are less stores than expected. Nevertheless, there are many different kinds of seafood on display for sale. Those huge crabs are most impressive. You can choose what you like and try them out in the open space outside where there are tables and chairs. I did that and found the sushi most delicious, fresh and sweet. Probably because it is getting late, some stores actually offered discounts to attract customers. There are also restaurants in the Market for those who want to dine in greater comfort. Overall, the prices of the seafood are reasonable but do not expect them to be cheap.

Sakaiminato is one of the most famous fishmarkets in Japan

I did not find out this fact until a Japanese friend told me about it. You need to be in the Matsue area, ideally via rental car, to explore the seafood bounty of this area that is Sakaiminato. There is a big fishmarket where you can buy trays of shelled Masuda crab. Dining on a whole crab can be a hassle, but imagine around 20-30 pieces of crab leg already deshelled and ready to eat? A tray costs around 1500 yen and it's so easy to eat you can use it as a snack, or enjoy it in your hotel room.

There is also a big seafood restaurant in the area that is one of the biggest ones I've seen. Included in my lunch teishoku was a miso soup that contained a controversial ingredient so I best leave it unmentioned. But it was one of the few times I've eaten it in Japan.

People familiar with me on the forum will notice I don't visit anymore. Also this will be one of my last reviews. But I have a happy reason for that. I will be moving to Japan in May 2015 for at least 5 years so I can resume my travels. I rarely visit Japan travel forums when I am in Japan because I am too busy planning my own itineraries!!! I already have a growing list of 75 offbeat, off-the-beaten-path things I want to do and see in Japan. I need to tie up the loose ends on things, festivals, and stuff I never got around to doing my first 15 years in Japan. As I will be back in the Kanto area, I am really looking forward to resuming the JR hikes every weekend when I'm not traveling out of town. Maybe I'll post a review now and then . . .
