Highly recommend it. Feels very adventurous and you get unbelievable views at the top. I traveled in July 2019 before the pandemic.

Recommend taking the Ropeway .... in BOTH directions!
Oct 2019
Arriving on Miyajima Island about 10:00am with no pre-planned itinerary, I decided on the spur of the moment to take the Ropeway up Mt. Misen and, .... well, take it from there! My lack of preparation meant I was unaware of the free shuttle bus to the lower (Momijidani) Station, so I took a taxi. Arriving at the Ropeway, I picked up a "Mt. Misen Walking Guide Map" which showed a number of walking courses to descend, of varying durations from 1 ~ 2hrs. I purchased a one-way ticket up on the Ropeway without a thought as to the descent.
The Ropeway is in two parts; a lower circulating ropeway with individual gondolas that could comfortably accommodate 4 ~ 6 people comfortably and an upper funicular type ropeway with a pair of larger 30-capacity gondolas. The lower ropeway takes about 10-mins to ascend to the intermediate transfer station (Kayatani) and as traffic was light, I had a car to myself. The upper ropeway ascends to the the Shishiiwa Station in just 4-mins and although cars depart at 15-min intervals, it too was fairly empty when I went up.
At Shishiiwa Station toilets and refreshments are available and it is adjacent to the Observatory platform which gives commanding views towards Hiroshima. From the Station, even if you are heading to the summit of Mt. Misen, you have to descend initially from the observatory. The path is surprisingly rough and uneven and after about 10-mins you reach a point where the path divides; upwards to Mt. Misen summit or down through the Misen Primevil Forest back to the lowest Ropeway Station.
As a near 70-year old solo traveller, I studied the information board indicating the estimated times for the various routes and concluded that I would struggle to reach the summit on these uneven paths and elected to head downwards .... how difficult could that be? On a warm October day it was oppressively humid under the canopy of the Primevil Forest; wearing the wrong clothes and the wrong footwear, sweating profusely and stupidly carrying no water it took me almost 2-hrs to negotiate the estimated 50-mins route. I could say I wasted a lot of time stepping out of the way of other walkers, but frankly I needed the frequent breaks. Having aged 10-years in the ardous descent, I felt too exhausted to continue shuffling around Miyajima and headed for the ferry/train back to Hiroshima.
If there's a moral in all this, apart from the lack of preparation and knowing your own limits, it certainly includes the recommendation to take the Ropeway .... in BOTH directions!

Best be taken on the way up and then hike down
Nov 2019
Unfortunately did we do it the other way around and understood in retrospect that it would have been the much cleverer choice the other way around. You can basically get the cable car nearby the port that you enter the island on and head up straight to Mt. Misen (small walk inbetween). The view is spectacular and if you bring the 1,2-2h can you walk your way back in a kind of circuit. We hiked up (quite strenuous) and took the ropeway down, which was still fun and a beautiful sight to see, but as already mentioned definitely the harder way to do it.

great view.
Oct 2019
arrived on the island and decided to start our day by going up the cable cars to the top of the mountain. easy signs to follow. a transfer to another car along the way up. great views along the way. over a huge gorge. walked down, an arduous feat.

Miyajima Island
Oct 2019
Miyajima Island is a fascinating cultural site. The hike up after the railway is a bit strenuous but the views are magnificent! Be sure to try some oysters in the village! I especially enjoyed the Okonomiyaki with oysters. Unfortunately the floating gate at the harbor is under repair, so you don't get to see it in all it's splendor.

Under Construction Feb 2020

The Ropeway is closed for normal maintenance for the Month of February. Also note the shrine is under construction, not a good month to visit

A Miyajima must!
Oct 2019
The ropeway is always a fun way to travel and have the best views of Miyajima. Be prepared to take your walking shoes so you can hike Mt Misen once you disembark the ropeway. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't do the hike. It's not easy but the view is definitely worth it!

A trip highlight!
Jan 2020 • Couples
Ropeway was a highlight of our trip! To take a small car to the top, then a larger tram over to a second peak. The views of the bay are amazing. At the second peak you can go to the left the observation point or to the right and take a half mile trek up to another peak which is absolutely amazing! This is the peak of Mount Misen, I highly recommend you do it! Just remember to bring a little water and take your time on the trail.

Beautiful Views on Miyajima
Sep 2019
If visiting Miyajima Island when in Hiroshima, the ropeway is a must do! We found it on a brochure in the arrival dock of Miyajima and it was well worth it. There is a short walk to a shuttle bus that will take you to the ropeway station, but the walk to the ropeway station is not bad. Provided it's a clear day, the views are beautiful from ropeway and the viewing platforms. The ropeway is in two parts or there is a mountain hike trail available. We got a round trip ticket for the ropeway and the gorgeous views from all sides at the top were well worth it.
