The main square in this fascinating former Soviet republic's capital that is full of squares, parks and open spaces. Overlooked by pre 1991 architecture maintained to modern standards Ala Too is a must visit for any tourist.
The changing of the guard had all of the grandeur one would expect in such a fabulous place.
In 'The Land of Forty Tribes,' Kyrgyzstan's capital square delivered.
Full marks.

There are a number of large statues and a very nice water fountain.

Very nice square especially in summer. With the dry heat of Bishkek, the fountains are a great refreshment. Definitely try the kvass drink sold by the ladies with big buckets. Very delicious.

Spacious and all encompassing historical square that can impress any casual visitor. I went round this square many a times during my three days stay visiting museums, parks, historical monuments and a variety of eateries. Best place to spend time and energise oneself. The Kyrgyz national flag in the square in front of the museum and by the side of the tall statue of freedom is a major attraction.

I am planning three country to visit in March 2019 Bishkek, Almaty and Tashkent cities for one week on land borders. Can anyone tell me are these safe, which order mean to go first and crossing the border etc. Thanks

I agree, Marshutka's are the best and cheapest way of travel. Did only two countries (Almaty-Bishkek), both are safe.

Fellow Trippers,
Salaam!
Please, does anyone know the schedule for the changing of the guard in September?
For example, is it every hour on the hour? Every two hours on the hour? At very specific times?
Trying to get clarity on this.
Thanks in advance! :-)
Written 26 August 2016
I was told it is every hour on the hour.
