For really good deals on Guatemalan handicrafts, especially leather goods, woolen blankets and masks, check out the underground stalls here, where fresh produce is also available.

Good market for a gift. I purchased a blanket and two potholders. Lots of fruit and food stalls. Typical market but nice. Worth a visit.

The central market right behind the metropolitan church is an interesting place to see local people life. Many shops, food stalls, and fresh market are under one roof. The building is like a nuclear bunker

Located just behind the Metropolitan Cathedral with many shops selling souvenirs. More like a flea market. Has food section at bottom floor. A few restaurants there you can try some local food. Try your bargain skills at those souvenir vendors.

For us El Mercado is a place to we must visit in every country that we visit. It is a place where you can interact with the locals, try their food, and know a little bit about the local people daily routine.

What an amazing subterranian mercado -- several levels underground, and a serious variety of Guatemalan textiles, leather goods, pottery, and clothing. Another area has local foods (try the Gallina - old hen -- with soup -- such flavor!). Also produce and meats, of course. The...More

I adored Mercado Central! So many foods, crafts, and gifts to see. It took me hours to walk around to see everything. Many of the vendors i found were willing to haggle. If something seems a bit overpriced go with your gut. Also odds are,...More

As you can see at the picture, the market is under ground and behind that is the Cathedral. So you can go a hang around, but don’t expect to have a blast like restaurants or so, I saw two Mc Donald’s *Yucky, in the plaza...More

Great market with lots of food options. Vegetable selection was not as big as I had hoped. If you are looking for real exotic stuff probably won’t see it here. But overall a fun place and great way to experience real native foods.
