The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. The glimmering white shells of the Sydney Opera House contrast with the bright blue waters of the Sydney Harbor. It appears naturalistic like a remnant of an ancient shell from another age yet futuristic! The UNESCO World Heritage site, The Sydney Opera House is an icon of Australia and one of the world's most recognizable buildings. The Sydney Opera House was opened in 1973 and is one of the leading live entertainment venues in the world. It has six theatres which can host 5,800 guests and perform over 2000 shows annually. The Sydney Opera House has over 8.2 million visitors every year just to marvel at the breathtaking architecture.Dear gan a, Thank you for your exquisite review! You borrowed my favorite quote about the Sydney Opera House from Louis Kahn. We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit to our iconic site and agree that the architecture is breathtaking from every angle! - TVDadTampa, Florida1,482 contributionsWhen in Sydney See a Show!A lot of people, visiting Sydney, take pictures, take in a tour, take selfies and never take in a show at the Sydney Opera House. I’m here to tell you SEE A SHOW! They do 2000+ performances a year and only about 200 of them are actually operas. You will have lots to choose from! We did see an opera, La Boheme. It was magical, even thought it was sung entirely in a foreign language. Italian singing and English subtitles! It’s a great bucket list adventure. Use the website to see the schedule of events. We bought our tickets online and had no problem when we arrived. Lots of steps, so if your wearing heels, keep that in mind.Dear TVDad, Thank you for your lovely review, it is true the Sydney Opera House offers a diverse and exciting range of performances: ranging from Opera to ballet, comedy to classical music and everything in between - there really is something for everyone! We are thrilled you enjoyed your performance of La Boheme, by our friends at Opera Australia - we agree it was a magical show!! We hope to welcome you back again soon. - DurwoodyDallas, Texas434 contributionsSkip the Tour! See A Show OR do Both!Like many visitors, I had seen numerous photographs over the years of the iconic Sydney Opera House. It is so much different seeing it in person. We did not take a tour. My husband surprised me with tickets to see the Broadway show AMADEUS while we were in Sydney three days prior to a cruise. The architecture is so beautiful, but what surprised me the most was that the architecture was not smooth. When I previously saw pictures of the opera house, the curves looked smooth. When seeing it up close, the facade is made up of squares. Amazing. The interior is beautiful and the stage for the performance made my mouth drop. The performance of Amadeus was amazing. The costumes, sets, actors, music, singers, everything, made for a magical night. I definitely would recommend that in addition to a tour, try to book a performance/show to experience the Sydney Opera House in all its glory.Dear Durwoody, Thank you for your lovely review - what an awesome surprise from your husband! We are so glad you enjoyed your visit and performance of Amadeus at the Sydney Opera House. It was a stunning spectacle of a show! We agree, our tours are awesome, and the guides are passionate and informative - but there is nothing quite like the magic of a live performance. - Elise S1 contributionTrip to AussieAfter rainfall, the air felt so clean and refreshing! Even though I've been to the Opera house before, it was surprisingly bigger than what I remembered. The sun peeked through the clouds and illuminated the beautiful site. There weren’t that many visitors. However, different languages filled my ears. It’s amazing to see that people from all over the world come to Sydney, as well as celebrate the art and culture of this fascinating place. I suggest you visit Sydney during the week (prevent public holidays and the weekends). Additionally, carry a camera to capture these amazing memories. In order to get there, public transportations is convenient. If you drive a car, there is a parking lot! There are restaurants at the location. Many people gather together, chat, eat, drink! The atmosphere is filled with energy and excitement. It’s amazing how the opera house sits opposite to the Harbour bridge, so you get the best of both worlds. I spent an hour there, just to snap some photos and absorb the surroundings. There are performances within the opera house, so make sure you check them out, if you have the opportunity to do so. Furthermore, there’s a light show as well. I’ve never witnessed one before, but it will for sure not disappoint. Happy travels :)!Dear elisesC2850RW Thank you so much for your amazing review, you have summed up your visit beautifully! After wanting to visit Australia for many, many years, I finally made it! The iconic Opera house was first on our stop & the excitement was real!
There's a nice buzz around the area, it's crammed full of bars, people, places to eat & exudes a general good feeling.
The opera house itself was much smaller than I'd imagined from seeing it so many times on the TV but it's still an impressive structure. Inside was nothing like I'd imagined either but you can't go to Sydney & not at least walk round it (& under it!)
There was an art installation entitled 'Whispers' by Quandamooka artist Megan Cope, while we were there, ''using more than 85,000 oyster shells positioned across the area, the artist evokes the ancestral midden sites that were used on this site for Aboriginal celebrations and gatherings for thousands of years.''
Iconic, awesome & well worth a look.

Dear NarcissisticNobody,
Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit to our iconic landmark. it's true all year round there is a buzz around the House, with the magnificent architecture and the glittering harbour, it is well worth the visit, to make some picture-perfect memories!
Megan Cope's installations were stunning and poignant, I wish that they could've been a permanent fixture, as the Sydney Opera House is situated on a point named by our First Nation Australians as 'Tubowgule': where the salt waters meet the fresh waters, and it has been a place of culture and storytelling for thousands of years.
We hope to welcome you back one day soon.

The tour completely exceeded my expectations. Our guide Evi was extremely kind and presented us with the perfect blend of storytelling and architecture facts (namely about the many interior/exterior structures and the hall acoustics) to keep us engaged the whole time. Even if you are seeing a performance, I’d highly recommend the tour beforehand as I have no doubt it would enhance the experience. Thanks again Evi!

An ABSOLUTE MUST for locals and those visitors wanting to attend a performance at the famed Sydney Opera House. The next stop for this group should be Broadway in New York City. Prepare to rub your hands raw with applause and strain your vocal cords shouting for more. Anyone reviewing this performance and claiming it to be “too risqué” doesn’t understand the beauty and artistic styling of a remarkable production - stay home next time.

Linda, our guide, was so passionate and knowledgeable about Sydney Opera House it was impossible not to enjoy the backstage tour. We viewed lots of spaces and were given so much information about how all the venues within the opera house building work. So many steps to climb! Breakfast at the end was a feast. Fabulous on all counts. 🤣🤣🤣

Early start at 6.45am. Met guide ( lovely lady but sorry can't remember her name) at stage door. Very pleasant and welcoming . Set off in a small group to visit various theatres, back stage rooms and other areas not normally in public domain. Guide was very informative, cheerful and had that knack of making everyone feel involved. After tour had breakfast in the Green Room ( where actors/ actresses and directors etc normally congregate Very enjoyable . (Massive almond croissants.). Had opportunity to direct from the pit 👍and tinkle on a Steinway if you wanted. The tour is quite expensive but we'll worth it.

Was able to walk up and book a tour on the day we wanted to go - wasn't around wi-fi to book ahead of time. We had about a 40 minute wait doing it this way. We met our guide at the appropriate time and place and were given earphones (optional to wear) that allowed everyone to hear what she was saying no matter how much our group was spread out.
The history and architecture is really interesting. There is a lot of walking - they say up to 300 stairs - didn't count, but it didn't seem that bad. There is a stair free option of this tour, but there are things you don't see.
A highlight for us was in the concert hall - someone was actually working with the Grand Organ which we were told is only played maybe twice a year. Our guide had never heard it played before and was very excited, as were we.
After the tour we grabbed a bite at the Opera House Canteen. The price was reasonable and the food very good. Seating was outside with a nice view of the harbour.

Greetings!
My husband and I will be in Sydney CBD over New Year 19/20. I am in a compact mobility scooter as I do not have use of one ankle/foot (but I am a mad “chair dancer” LOL). We want to book the Portside GE NYE party, but wanted to know if there are tables and chairs set up for GE to use? I see just a few scattered photos of the setup, so I imagine it changes over the years... but perhaps a more recent instance? I can stay in my scooter as a “chair” assuming I’m allowed to... but it is preferred for my husband to be able to sit by me at times throughout the night (it gets tiresome having views of bottoms everywhere I go, LOL).
Also, how is the process to enter for the Portside NYE event? Am I in for a challenge just getting to the Portside area once we get to the Opera House? Such as queues or heaven forbid STAIRS (my mortal enemy, we meet again).
Any hints or tips towards these questions are greatly appreciated!!! Happy Holidays and cheers!
Jen

Hi Jen,
Thank you very much for your recent inquiry.
Access to the Portside function is all on one flat level (so you have already defeated that mortal enemy of yours!) and access to the Opera House on New Years Eve varies greatly to normal operating procedures.
I've sent you a private message with my email address and if you could contact me on that I can make sure that we can tailor everything to meet your needs on the evening.

I have a 5-hour long layover in Sydney before flying to Adelaide. I will reach Sydney at 11 AM and I am thinking of passing by the Sydney Opera House. I’ll be with my husband and 7-yo son and we have 4 big check-in bags in tow. Where can we leave our luggage so we can comfortably make a quick visit just to take some snapshots in front of the Sydney Opera House? Is it good leave it at Smarte Carte in Terminal 2 where we’re gonna take the plane to Adelaide? Or is there a more convenient & affordable place where we can leave our luggage? Because we have to be back at Terminal 2 at least 2 hours before our 4 PM flight. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am so sorry I have just received your message. We have never had to leave luggage anywhere, but I would think the easiest and quickest place for you would be at the airport. Are you able to do an early check-in?? That way you can get rid of your badges immediately, even if you do “self” checkin! The Opera House is certainly a beautiful icon to see, there is also the “Observation Building” where you can see all of Sydney from if you dont have much time. There are many cafe’s around the Opera House so you can enjoy a coffee or beverage before you have to rush back to the airport! I hope this isnt too late for you and if not I hope it helps! Enjoy your stay!
Why does it charge a booking fee when booking a show
Sydney Opera House
Sydney, Australia
Dear catlady4331,
Thank you very much for your question.
The Opera House is a not-for-profit organisation with a significant and ongoing investment in ticketing technology, infrastructure and personnel operating for extended trading hours. The booking fee makes a contribution towards sustaining this service. This booking fee is also applied per transaction, so it’s best to book everything you need in a single transaction.
Our current booking fees are $8.50 online and $5 in person at our onsite Box Office and is not applicable to Sydney Opera House tour bookings.
Kind regards,
Team SOH
