Overview
Experience the wilds of the Louisiana swamp plus hear the fascinating history of a Southern plantation all in one day with this great-value combo tour. Visit Destrehan Plantation, the oldest of its kind in the region, where you’ll learn about antebellum life while touring the restored mansion and grounds. Then ride in a covered boat through Manchac Swamp, a privately owned habitat for alligators, egrets, and other wildlife.
What to Expect
After boarding an air-conditioned coach in the French Quarter, follow the Lake Pontechartrain shoreline to Destrehan Plantation, the oldest plantation in the lower Mississippi Valley. Tour the carefully restored French colonial mansion with a costumed guide, learning about former inhabitants and the southern sugar cane industry. You'll also have a chance to explore the gardens and a museum dedicated to the 1811 slave revolt.

Continue on to the Manchac Swamp for a wildlife tour in a covered boat that provides protection from weather in all seasons. Learn about swamp culture and the endangered ecosystem from a guide as you look for alligators, raccoons, snakes, birdlife, and giant rodents. The swamp is privately owned, so you don't have to worry about crowds.

Return to the convenient French Quarter drop-off point in the late afternoon or evening.

Swamp

Enjoy the swamp tour very interesting. Plantation could have been better. Needed more on the out buildings as well as the production of sugar cane. To much time spent on the family of the plantation.
