This was amazing. The church service at The Greater Highway Deliverance Church was outstanding. The energy, thankfulness and talent was transformative. The brunch at the Cotton Club was made exceptional by the music of Ms. Helen Stiles and her band. We danced to her gospel music and celebrated being alive. It was fabulous. BUT the most magnificent thing about the tour was Duane. He is the most amazing tour guide in the world and should be promoted to tour guide extraordinaire. Multilingual, personable, Ivy educated- he’s exceptional and brilliant in his telling of New York history. DO THIS TOuR!!!!!!

I don't even know what I expected of this tour but I am really glad we booked it. I assumed it would be a smallish church with a small choir and it was. The tour before the church service was excellent. I learned a lot about the area thanks to Mahalia. She did an excellent job speaking in both English and French! We went to a small church and it was such an authentic, moving experience for us. The ladies I ran into that were attending there were so welcoming and kind. The singing was very good and up lifting. We left after the worship part was over and off we went to The Cotton Club. We were entertained by a talented Gospel/Jazz trio. Again, I was moved by some of the songs and others were so up lifting. Before I knew what had happened, I was up dancing in a Conga line! The food was very good and hot. They were putting it out when we got there. It was a great day and a very nice way to wind up our trip!

This was the Sunday morning tour on Christmas eve, which included a trip to a gospel church service and brunch at Sylvia's, a soul food restaurant. We waited half an hour outside in very cold weather and then had a coach tour, which was adequate.

The gospel "service" was not really a service but a show - not a very good one- put on for us. There were no hymns or sermon and the highlight was a group of people running and swirling to recorded music, with colored fabric in their wake. Beforehand the guide told us that this was going to be an uplifting, authentic and joyful experience. Afterwards he admitted that we didn't really attend the service but just the "warm up", as he put it. Apparently the church gets a per capita fee for everyone that the tour brings in. The church had the good sense to take collection at the beginning, before we knew what was coming.

Next was Sylvia's and our guide rhapsodized about soul food and its therapeutic effects. It was so obviously disingenuous that it was offensive. The food was OK but we were seated together at one end of the restaurant, away from the other patrons. The staff barely spoke to us or smiled while they brought the food and took away our plates. I certainly didn't feel welcome and could not wait to get out of there.

This tour is a bad way to visit Harlem. One would be better off to simply attend a church service and put the price of the tour in the collection plate.

This was a great way to see the real Harlem and an authentic Harlem Church Service. The tour leaves from just behind Times Square on a very comfortable coach and our guide, Anthony, was a real New Yorker who had lived most of his life in Harlem and his local knowledge as well as his knowledge of New York history and even what movies were filmed where, made this an amazing trip. If you want a little insight into the real Harlem and to experience a genuine Harlem Church service (I was sceptical and thought this might be a little fake - it really wasn’t) then this is well worth it. We didn’t do the Sunday brunch buffet so can’t comment on this. Thanks Anthony for all your top tips and advice about NYC generally as well as being a great guide for this tour. 5 stars ⭐️

Dear Hook911, We so appreciate your feedback and recommendation of our Harlem Gospel tour. Harlem Spirituals has been organizing tours to the Harlem neighborhood for over 30 years. Our itineraries incorporate history, culture and as for the church, we want visitors to experience an authentic worship service within the community. Thank you for taking the time to share such kind words about your experience. Best regards, Erika Elisabeth Harlem Spirituals Inc/ New York Visions

The bus tour to Harlem with Anthony's guiding and excellent information was very well received. He knew a lot and he communicated it in a pleasant way. However the church and supposedly gospel visit was not what I expected. There we a handful of locals in the church and at least 4 your groups of 20 people each so the tourists wag out numbered the congregation. The quality of the singing was very poor. Shouting and screeching more than singing. I have heard beautiful gospel music before, admittedly not from Harlem or from this Pentecostal church hall, and the singing and music we heard 24 Nov was unrecognisable. Suggest providing the tourists with earplugs so the decibels don't damage the ears. It felt like being at a very loud Rock concert. Real gospel voices don't require a lot of accompaniment. Very disappointed. The bus your was great but the gospel experience a disaster. Real tourist trap.

Dear RobbynaS, Thank you for taking the time to share feedback on your recent tour. While we are happy that you enjoyed the tour content, we understand that the quality of signing did not meet your expectations. However, what we don't agree with, are your truly disparaging comments referring to the Sunday church service as a " real tourist trap". The churches that welcome our groups allow us to experience their authentic worship services. The choirs are comprised of real people; congregants who volunteer their time to express the word through song. The point of this portion of our tour is for visitors to know more about the important role of the black church historically within the community. This is not meant to be a show put on for tourists but an opportunity for guests to experience how the congregation worships and the great joy in which they serve. Cordially, Erika Elisabeth Vice president Harlem Spirituals / New York Visions

Our tour visited the Thessalonian Baptist church in Bronx NY. We had an amazing tour guide Anthony that gave us so much history of Harlem where he lives and helped us see this amazing area. The praise and worship service was spirit filled and gave us a cultural view of the heart of Harlem. Money well spent for these midwesterners!

Dear Gordonintx, We are surprised that you posted such a disparaging review when you did not even take our tour!! We use deluxe coaches that are standard for sightseeing with normal-sized seats. As for our personnel, it seems that you were more interested in taking pictures of our location to post this unfair review rather than listening to the solutions that we were providing. The bus that you initially boarded was not completely full. Yet, we held up the last bus just for you on which you would have had 2 seats to yourself but you had already made the decision to get off the previous bus leaving the rest of your party on board before we even got started to get a refund. Our policy clearly states that no-shows and last-minute cancellations are non-refundable. Advising visitors to just walk into any church is really disrespectful and irresponsible. We take pride in the relationships that we have developed with pastors and congregations over the last 30 years. In addition to communication with the churches beforehand regarding our participation in the services; we also impart the history of the church and information on the order of the services so that visitors are not disruptive to the worshiping congregants. Furthermore, the service is only one component of the experience. We discuss history, culture, art, architecture and visit Harlem; one of NewYork City's most famed neighborhoods. If anything, I am sorry that you missed that. Regards, Erika Elisabeth Vice president Harlem Spirituals / New York Visions

It's an absolut must do...
Great tour, stopping several times in Harlem, with clear, precise and factual information by a top notch guide Antonio (who is a local NYorker and Harlem resident)
Harlem history and development, main places such as the Apollo teather (astonishing piece of art contemporary history and well knowed artists)...
The visited church (in the Bronx) was quite friendly and offered us all a warm reception. Top services, with gospel that leave us with goosebumps...
I have been wanting to do this experience for years know, and my only regret is to not have done it before... I will for sure repeat it over and over.... Allways on sundau morning!!!

First...our guide, Damian....hire him again, Harlem Spirituals! He’s interesting and informative. We learned a lot. Highway Church....I can’t thank you enough for welcoming us into your sanctuary. It was a highlight of our visit to NYC.

Now....Shame on you, Harlem Spirituals, for turning what should have been an amazing experience into a nightmare. We were “greeted” at the entrance to your offices by two, let’s say, “assertive” and not very welcoming bouncers who barked orders at us and others in a futile effort to squeeze too many people into your small office space.

My husband needed to use the restroom and you sent him to Starbucks. You might want to rethink that. Starbucks has no restrooms. Starbucks sent him to McDonalds across the street. They have restrooms for paying customers. My husband waited in line, bought a coffee, and showed his receipt to the restroom guard to be given the privilege of using the facilities.

By then, my mother and I had made our way to the chaos of Harlem Spiritual buses on 44th Street where we searched for our bus. My husband, who doesn’t see well, stepped onto the wrong bus looking for us. The guide on the Italian-language bus, who would be a great drill instructor, barked at my husband for boarding the wrong bus. You might want to have a chat with him about his unfriendly manner.

Once we were on the bus, Damien was wonderful! Hire him again. Do not hire the bus company again, though. I take that back. The bus and driver were good, but when you hired the bus, you didn’t spring for the package that includes unlocking the onboard toilet. I’m sure it was clean, because it was locked and unavailable for use.

By the time we got to the Apollo theater, at least two people on the bus, my husband included, were desperate for a bathroom. In a true déja vu moment, my husband learned that Starbucks has no bathroom, but McDonalds across the street might, At Damien’s suggestion, my husband begged and pleaded with the guard at the Apollo, who reluctantly allowed him to use the bathroom there. The woman from our bus, who also begged and pleaded, was turned away.

From that point on, everything was wonderful. The church service was powerful. The congregation was gracious and welcoming. And guess what....the church had bathrooms! What a relief!

So, sadly, I would not recommend this tour. Find a church, grab an Uber, and go to Harlem on your own. That way you’ll be able to enjoy the experience without the stress of getting there on a Harlem Spirituals bus. Oh, and take Damien with you. He’s amazing.
