About
When tour guests asks us, "what one thing should I not miss in Portland," we pick the 4.5- to 5-mile (8-9 km) hike in Forest Park. No matter what the season, hiking in the park is entering another world right on the borders (and through the fabric) of the city. We offer two daily departures, both with varied terrain and about 900 ft elevation gain. The morning hike is focused around a classic Northwest Portland experience, and ends at the International Rose Test Garden, the Forest Park Experience (9 a.m. to noon). The afternoon hike starts at Goose Hollow, weaves through the neighborhoods and up into the park, the Goose Hollow to the Forest (1 to 5 p.m.). Both pass the iconic spots; Japanese Garden, Pittock Mansion, and Witch's Castle; but take a different approach to the forest. Being in Forest Park is to be immersed a fluid place that exists both in and out of time. In the forest—within minutes leaving the street—you can forget, or wonder at the fact that you are still in a city.

History and hiking in one!!!
Jul 2020 • Family
Of course you can hike by yourself! But having a local guide walk you through beautiful Forest Park makes all of the difference! Sarah was our guide and she made the hike a billion times more interesting because she gave us the history of the park, landmarks within the park, and was able to point out the local birds, trees, and plants. The kids even picked up wild blackberries and thimble berries to try and she pointed out other edible and non edible plants. We walked through the forest to Pittock Mansion which she again told us the history of the family and the mansion and how it became a local tourist stop. We then walked through a beautiful neighborhood with unique homes and crossed our way into Washington Park where we finished at the Rose Gardens. The entire hike/walk was beautiful and it was a great way to spend the morning! If you love to learn about the area you’re visiting while you hike, this is the best of both worlds!

A wooded escape from the city
Sep 2019
I've only been in Oregon a couple of years, so taking a guided tour of Forest Park with Sarah from Around Portland Tours seemed like a great way to explore.

Sarah greeted me at a local coffee shop, and after a short walk through the neighborhood, we found ourselves on the way down into the canyon. Who would have guessed this wooded scene was right in the city?

We hiked the Lower Macleay Trail along Balch Creek, spotting native Cutthroat Trout and crayfish in the pools of the creek, while Sarah told us the origin of the park, and the story of trail's namesake, Donald Macleay. She pointed out flora and fauna along the way, while telling us about the Macleay family.

We spotted Pacific Wrens, Dark-Eyed Juncos and Chestnut-Backed Chickadees along the trail, and we heard a Belted Kingfisher cackling down the canyon.

We soon came upon the Stone House ruins, once a bathroom and ranger station for the park that was abandoned after the infamous Columbus Day Storm of 1962. Rumor says the structure is haunted, and that witches still use it for rituals to this day, but all we saw was some melted candle wax and graffiti.

Near the Stone House, we spotted an enormous Douglas Fir tree, which Sarah pointed out is the tallest tree in the park, and probably in all of Portland. We crossed the creek and hiked up the Wildwood Trail to the parking area, and sat down for a snack. Sarah pointed out the Dawn Redwoods around us, a Chinese import and an unusual deciduous conifer tree.

We hiked back through the park, taking a slightly different route, which lead us through a gorgeous neighborhood full of Victorians, bungalows, and modern luxury homes, with beautifully-kept gardens.

A few more blocks and we were back at the coffee shop where we started. The whole trip took a couple of hours, but it was clear you could hike all day through the park. And with Sarah guiding, I'm sure there would be no shortage of sights and information.

I highly recommend this hike, and Around Portland Tours, especially for those who don't know their way around. It would be easy to get lost in a park this big. Leave the wayfinding to a guide, and instead enjoy the scenery, while learning about the park.

It was truly a pleasure hiking with the two of you and taking a little different route than usual. I loved learning from you as well -- you are such consummate birders! -- I can't wait to share my new knowledge with other tour guests! -- Sarah

Great for locals and visitors!
I’m from Portland, but I moved away for 25 years and could not remember the last time I was in Forest Park. I decided to see the space through the eyes of a guide and I’m so glad I did! I met up with the guide, Sarah, at a cute coffee shop in NW Portland with a smooth cold brew (the cookies looked amazing, too, but this is sadly a no-sugar month for me) and then walked to the park. We spent the next couple of hours learning about the park’s history, the landscape and plants, and what the future might hold for a “park to park” corridor. It was fantastic. The guide was knowledgeable, personable, and a wonderful advocate for Portland green spaces.

What a treat to be steps from quaint restaurants and shops and completely enveloped by forest and a babbling brook!

On the way back, we detoured through some quiet side streets and marveled at the gardens and architecture of one of PDX’s most exclusive neighborhoods. And then ended up back in Northwest, with so many choices for delicious food it was tough to pick where to eat!

I would easily and confidently recommend this tour to any visitor, especially if some of the more strenuous or far flung adventure spots are out of reach for any reason. There were some uphill sections, and a couple steep edges (I’m afraid of heights), but overall the path was smooth and very well-maintained. It would be great for a wide range of folks.

I would also recommend this to locals unfamiliar with the gem that is Forest Park. Having a guide takes the guesswork out of picking a route, and affords the opportunity to learn/see details you might not even know you’re missing otherwise. I’ll definitely be back to FP in the future, and I really appreciate all the knowledge I’ll bring back with me.

Oh, it was so much fun hiking and chatting with you, and I'm so glad you mentioned early in the hike that you had always loved the houses in the neighborhood. It gave me a chance to devise a little different route that let us all explore new territory! And thank you for your knowledge, I love talking to writers and it's so much fun to learn more about your essays. (Little plug to those who read this far, Chelsea's book The Skinned Bird is now part of my guiding toolkit.) Thanks so much for coming along, come see me again soon please!! -- Sarah

I live here and I learned new things!
Sep 2019 • Friends
There’s nothing quite like seeing my home environs through someone else’s eyes, and the itinerary of this tour is deserving of this company’s insider attention for both locals and travelers. On this tour I experienced some of my city’s greatest hits in a whole new delivery. The pleasure of exploring Portland with Sarah as a guide is how she chooses to tell stories. If you’re the kind of person who likes to engage a sense of place with an eclectic array of botany, public record, personal narrative, history and her-story, Sarah’s tour style is a reservoir of revelation. I’ve had the pleasure of repeat experiences with her, and I love her signature way of coining endearing terms for things along the way. She can speak to all kinds of inquiry and curiosity for a very personable and conversational tour experience. If you’re a first-time visitor to the area, this company offers unique experiences brimming with personality providing more of a friendly jaunt with a local than a scripted tour that limits one’s experience.
Of important note, this hike is primarily uphill with a long paved downhill descent and will bring on the sweat!

BEAUTIFUL!!! JUST DO IT!!!
Aug 2019 • Solo
This was one of the most unique and amazing tours I have ever taken. We walked through the glorious 5 thousand acre Forest Park in Oregon. Walking next to beautiful foliage with our guides Edwin and Sarah giving us details about the flora and fauna every step of the way.
We saw clear streams of water and historical sites in addition to stunning vistas and views at the Pittock Mansion, radiant roses to smell at the gardens and it was paced for all to take in the sites and our guides strong history of the area. Thank you so much for an unforgettable journey. I will definitely do another tour with this company and can’t recommend it enough for others.

Meh...Pretty hike but NOT worth the money
Aug 2019
I'm giving this hike a 2-star rating because the scenery and the hike itself is quite nice. The trees/forest are lush, everything was damp from recent rains, and it was a very pleasant way to spend the morning. If I was rating the scenery alone I would give it a 4 -star. However, the "tour" associated with this hike was worthless and definitely not worth the money - we just as easily could have walked this path by ourselves without the "assistance" of a tour guide. We met our guide, Lynn, at the cafe and started out shortly after 9am. Unfortunately for us, she has only been in the Portland area for a couple of months and it was very clear she didn't have the background and experience to be a "guide" for this hike. For most of the 2.25 hour walk, she walked about 25 feet in front of us and would go for 15-20 minutes at a time without saying anything. Occasionally she would stop at a place along the way and mention, "this is a very pretty spot", or give us a few sentence description of what we were seeing. We really didn't learn very much about the history of the area, interesting tidbits, etc. There was no storytelling of local lore or anecdotes of Portland as other reviews mentioned - It simply was a walk with someone showing us which way to go. As I mentioned, we just as easily could have done this walk ourselves and saved the $100 ($50 x 2 people). Just a side note, we took this hike on a Sunday morning; that was a BIG mistake due to all the runners and other hikers on the trail. It felt like a freeway! (although this was no fault of the tour company)

We're glad you enjoyed the scenery and lushness of the hike, and as you note, Sundays can be busy in the summer with all the locals and tourists enjoying the trail. (Our favorite times are week days!) We're sorry you felt that the narrative was less than you expected; we do strive to deliver a rich variety of stories and legends, as well as knowledge about the flora and fauna. Your guide does have a lot of experience in the forest system, and knows the plants and route well, and we will definitely work with her to develop her delivery of the stories we know she has learned. It's unfortunate that you were not able to find a point of connection together; and we really hope you will come see us another time. We'd be happy to give you a future tour on us to show that we can deliver what you had expected! -- Sarah

Great Portland walking tour for seeing the "wild" side of the Rose City
Aug 2019
I had a really great time seeing a side of Portland that I've never experienced. Our guide Edwin did an outstanding job leading us through interesting neighborhoods and parks on the afternoon tour. It was a nice contrast seeing the developed park areas (like the Rose and Japanese Gardens) vs. the more natural Forest Park in the West Hills. The excursion itself definitely had that "hanging out with your Portland buddy" rather than a canned tour feel, which we really appreciated. Lots of opportunities to literally smell the roses, ask questions, and take photos at a bunch of scenic spots, so it never felt rushed. I'll definitely hook up with the 'Around Portland Tours' guys again.

Wonderful Walk through the Forest Park
Jul 2019 • Solo
I joined the morning tour that started at a cute cafe near Forest Park. Our guide, Sarah, led us a way into this beautiful forest, giving lots of information about the history of the park, about the plants and flowers, a little anecdotes in Portland and taking us to hidden path or better way to get around the park. The hike was very easy and a fun way to enjoy the walk through the Forest Park, Pittock Mansion, and fantastic Rose Garden. It's a recommended short-hiking tour in Portland.

A great morning
This hike gives you a little bit of everything - a glimpse of some neighborhoods, lush forest trails, beautiful view and history at Pittock Mansion, and a fragrant ending at the gorgeous rose garden. Comfortable pace and delightful storytelling of local lore along the way.
