Roaring Camp Steam Train Through Santa Cruz Redwoods

Select Date and Travellers
2 travellers
Explore the Santa Cruz Mountains on a historic train ride through a redwood forest from Roaring Camp in Felton, California. Admire the ancient redwood groves from the comfort of a steam locomotive chugging up the hillside. Venture into the forest and learn about the region from your informative train conductor, then explore an old-fashioned village where you can shop and take photos. This journey is fun for the whole family and a great way to see the beauty of California, as well as learn about the state’s railroad and engineering history. All aboard!
  • Book your ticket ahead of time to avoid sold-out departure times for the train
  • Learn about the redwood forest through your train conductor's commentary
  • Explore the Bear Mountain summit and its attractions
  • Walk through the historic village at the train's base camp
What to Expect
Find your way to the Roaring Camp Steam train's departure point in the town of Felton. Make your way through the recreation of an historic town and exchange your voucher for a ticket on the train ride you have chosen. Booking this ticket ahead of time guarantees your spot and your choice of departure time; rides often sell out, especially in the summer. Sit down on the open train and enjoy the scenery as the train chugs through the redwood forest. Listen to your conductor's commentary, which will fill you in on the history of the area and the train system in California. You'll learn that the train itself dates back to the 1800s and is one of the country's best preserved narrow-guage steam engines. When you reach Bear Mountain's summit, hop out to stretch your legs and explore the nearby Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Return to Roaring Camp at the end of your ride, which takes about an hour.

It was not a whole lot of view, information, etc. The young man was entertaining but not a great ride overall. We have done these types of rides in AZ and the view, history, and ability to get a history lesson was great.

The authentic 1911 build steam train is an experience in itself. Traveling with it up the mountain through the redwood forest is amazing. I highly recommend to do this if you are in the area.
