Horrific customer service and terrible ride experience
How I wish I had heeded the warnings in other negative reviews about this place before foolishly booking with them. I had an enquiry ahead of the ride which was dealt with very rudely. Still, I thought if the ride is good I can handle the lack of customer service. More fool me. We arrived on time for our briefing etc, and were on the horses by the booked departure time of 4.30pm. We then sat waiting on the horses in the yard for 25 minutes, waiting for two people to turn up. It turned out they were booked on the 5pm ride but the yard didn’t want to send them out just the two of them as this was not cost effective, so made 10 of us wait for them to turn up, be briefed and get on horses. Throughout the ride my horse was problematic, and pulling on his reins in a violent and unpredictable manner. I have ridden many horses before, but even I struggled to deal with this. So violent were his tugs on the reins that I ended up with rope burns on my palms. I flagged this issue several times with both of the guides taking us on the ride, but nothing was done about it. At the peak, where we stopped for the views and photos of the observatory, my horse wandered off so I was unable to take photos or see the view. Again nothing was done about it. The ride itself was slow and boring, and although the views are special, there is an overwhelming sense from the horses and the guides that they have done this hundreds of times before and the sense of boredom is hard to ignore. The most frustrating and disappointing element of what was an overpriced and mundane ride was that despite paying for two hour ride, and despite setting off 25 minutes late, we still arrived back at the yard at 6.30pm, almost a quarter of the time of the ride we paid for lost. There was no member of staff at the yard to speak to about this. On arriving home that evening I sent an email complaining about the much shortened ride, and the injuries sustained. I heard nothing back. I sent another email. No reply. I then phoned up, and was spoken to very rudely. I was asked to send another email whilst on the phone to make sure they were receiving them, which they were. I was assured the manager, Jason, would read my email and be in touch. Nothing. I emailed several more times, before phoning again, and asking the person I spoke to ask once again for Jason to contact me ASAP. Still nothing. All I am asking for is 25% of the money paid to be returned, having lost out on 25% of the ride. I have now sought legal advice and will be escalating the matter further. The complete lack of customer service, customer care and the money hungry nature of this company is staggering. Expect non stop requests for tips for the guides who apparently aren’t paid by the yard, only in tips, on top of what is already a vastly overpriced “experience”. The only reason I went with them is the time of day the ride was available, but other rides I have since done at other companies have been far superior, cheaper and much, much friendlier. I strongly advise you to AVOID this place at all costs.

      Chaotic but beautiful
This was a birthday gift and it was amazing! The only things that worried me as an experienced rider: When our group went, horses were scattered everywhere, and many beginners didn't know how to make sure horses weren't on top of one another. One kid's horse just started to walk away without the kid getting any proper run-down on how to make a horse stop and what not. Then another group came back and it became VERY overcrowded where horses were bumping into each other causing a safety issue for everyone. As we were waiting to go on our tour, people confused us with the group the just came back and we ready to help me down off my horse. I had to tell them we just started lol. My fiance isn't as experienced as I am, but the tour guide made my fiance go first and basically lead the group which confused the horses and made my fiance very nervous. The guide was helping the kids on horses behind up, but then he kept making his horse run back and forth to the front of the group, and then would randomly leave and go to the back to check on the kids. It kept frightening the horses and confusing them as to where to go. At one point, my fiance's horse was having issues with its reigns and I noticed that someone had tied the lead to the horn of the saddle and it was wrapped tight. This proves to be very dangerous as the horses head was limited and kept tripping. Instead, the guide didn't notice and just kept showing off how to hold the reigns tight and his was upsetting his own horse trying to demonstrate when the issue was something else. Then he kept yelling at my fiance to stay to the right but his horse was not used to leading and it was laughable - like, my dude, you're the guide. You need to be up front. I've been riding for decades and have ridding all over the US and in Europe so this isn't my first rodeo. It was VERY chaotic and I would advise to go with experience. Otherwise, the horses are wonderful, the trail is amazing, and it's terrific views of the city.

      Unprofessional
Very unorganised, our tour went nearly an hour late and because they tell you not to bring water everyone was standing in the sun for an hour then done a 2 hour ride with no water one person ended up passing out. Also you see some amazing views but there is no opportunity to stop and get any pictures with the views, the guide took a couple of average photos while we were on the trail but the horses were just walking along with their heads down and ears back and there was none of the nice scenery in the pictures. Before I got on the horse I went to fix the bridle because the buckle was not full done up and I was told to leave it as it was and I was not allow to touch the bridle. As an experienced rider I have seen some serious accidents from gear being left like this so was not at all comfortable with this. Also the parking situation is no ideal, because there was nowhere to park everyone start parking and blocking others in then when people returned to their cars the people that parked behind them were still out on rides so the lady at the check in started going through everyones bags to see if she could find sets of keys.

Not Worth It - Rude Front Office Manager
Front Office Manager was very rude and unprofessional. Horses seem to be in bad shape, dirty, tired and missing shoes. Guide was good.

Very expensive for what you get
Views were great but the overall experience wasn’t as good as it could be. I’m never going to like to receive a confirmation email prior to an activity for which I’ve already paid a lot which reminds me ‘not to forget cash for the tip’. Okay so I’m British and our view to tipping is different than the US but even so this annoyed me from the outset. Then, as you’re choosing a helmet, 2 large signs ‘suggesting’ the amount you should tip! This was not a cheap activity and I did not think the guide did anything to justify any type of tip at all! They spoke to no-one the entire 2 hours other than to briefly take everyone’s phone and take a few photos. No information about the view and they even carried bottles of water with them in the saddle bag and didn’t once offer one to anyone. They also asked if we like to add a bit to the ride and do an extra route which would mean we would arrive back 5-10 minutes later than schedule …. We arrived back 10 minutes early! The views were great and the horses were super and looked well taken care of but the whole vibe was of a business that had done this excursion so many times, it was no longer interesting or fun. I also thought that 90 minutes would have been better than 2 hours as by the end I was a little bit bored.

A Unique Way To See Views of LA
We booked the 2 hour trip last week and absolutely loved the views we climbed up to. The staff were phenomenal as were the horses. All levels of experience were accommodated. We are ex polo players and we were given the opportunity to check in as advanced riders if we wanted to, but we stayed at intermediate since we were unfamiliar with the horses. There were people in our group who were never on the back of a horse (without a golden pole sticking out :) to be pumped up and down ). The staff was very attentive to their fears and sent an "outrider" with them to lead their horse, so they could hang on to the pommel and enjoy the ride, rather than having to stress out over steering, turning and stopping for themselves. Also, for LA, the price was actually better than what I expected. Check their website for prices and Wednesday discounts. DON'T forget to leave your guide a tip!!! They deserve the tips as they work hard to take pictures and movies on your phone for you! We highly recommend this experience!!! Robin and Calum Avison

      Great family activity
Excellent, well trained, well behaved, well cared for horses. Hollywood Stars have used them for photo shoots and videos, especially those who do no know how to ride. Great for first time riders and experienced riders alike. We did the two hour walking trail, overlooking the city of LA. Very picturesque. You can see the Hollywood sign in the distance. A great family activity. Located at the end of a residential street, and ride up the mountain on a shared road with cyclists, joggers and walkers. Guides were very attentive and responsive. Guides took photos and videos with your own camera, of you and your group. Guides provided bottled water, although you are not allowed to bring your own water, bags, selfie sticks. Be prepared to tip cash in addition to the fee paid to ride. The guides apparently get tips as pay. Suggestions range per person from $15 $20 $25 for a one hour ride and $20 $25 $30 for a two hour ride depending on good, great and exceptional service from the guides.

      Great Ride!
My 12 yo grandson and I went for the two-hour Mt. Hollywood ride. I was very impressed with the whole operation. They were very good at asking about your experience with riding and if you are nervous about riding. They were then good at matching the horse and rider. We had eight of us on the ride. This is a trail ride, meaning you will walk in a single file line. The views of downtown and the east San Fernando Valley were great. They were kind and friendly. I would book with them again.

      Super friendly and wonderful views!
I had problems booking in advance (not their fault, I had a problem with my card), but they were happy to do a walk-in (this was a rainy day in march so might be different in summer/good weather). Super friendly staff overall and the horses seemed well cared for; they had turnout (not a big field but compared to other city stables over the world, it was superb), lots of hay and no overweight horses. I got a private 1h ride with amazing views despite the bad weather. Everything was green and lush, felt like riding on a rainforest mountain. Even managed to see the Hollywood sign, which was all I ever wanted. An oasis in a busy city. An extra plus for the donkey and the pig!

      Amazing experience
Amazing experience, my horse was a bit crazy but we had fun. The tour is long enough it was during summer time so it was burning and no shade as you can guess on top of the hill ; the guide was very nice and was checking that we were all alright, it was the first time for my son.

      A wonderful experience for beginners.
A wonderful experience was had by myself and my two eldest son's (18 & 20). The boys had never been on a horse before yet felt 100% comfortable, nothing led them to feel nervous. All the staff were extremely nice, polite and helpful. The horses and the ranch were all well cared for. The ride itself was great for us, a slow walk along a long trail and we were taken a slightly different route back. Great scenery over Los Angeles and we could see the Hollywood sign. Our guide was wonderful and took photos of our group along the ride. Would recommend this experience to everyone.

Don’t bother with the sunset ride
This had a lot of potential to be great but unfortunately they failed in the timing of the ride. Paid double the price of the day ride for a sunset ride. Sunset was at 445. The trip was scheduled for 4. Most people arrived before 4. We didn’t even leave the ranch until AFTER sunset. Literally had about 15 minutes of riding with daylight and then it was dark. When we got to the Hollywood sign we could hardly see it. Picture? Oh absolutely not. This was a complete waste of time and money! If they would have had the horse ready and had use leave at 4 then this would have been great. Instead it was a huge let down and I would not recommend.

Great views of the Hollywood Sunset
This was a must on our list of things to do for my older teen & young adults on their first trip to CA. It was a great ride. Our guide, “G” was personable and knowledgeable about the area & Hollywood history. We did the sunset ride which was a great view & much cooler at night. The horses looked well taken care of. Strongly recommend.

We recently returned from a trip to LA where we greatly enjoyed the horse riding experience on the Mulholland Trail Tour. My wife was initially very anxious as she had never ridden before, however was made to feel at ease by Cassandra who was patient and reassuring. Once underway it was an amazing experience with Ashley doing a great job of leading the trail with Casandra doing the commentary, and they both ensured that riders and horses were ok during the trek. We were lucky to have both Ashley and Casandra who made this such a memorable experience.

The horses are lovely and the ride is very easy.
It was nice they offered to take photos for you at one point on the way up. Some conflicting information about being able to pause briefly on the horse to take a photo with the Hollywood sign on the background (one rider said we could then walked on and the rear one said we needed to move).
Took a wee while on the ride to be placed together as a family.
One of the staff member was especially fantastic, talking to us about the horses we were on and giving some tour information.
The duration of the mulholland trail was enough as this is walking pace only as per the park rules.

Me and my son visited on Saturday and did the 9am ride.
All the horses so well cared for and loved.
The owner was lovely and showed us magazines of the celebs that had visited the ranch.
Tommy rode macaroni and I rode Howard.
The horse are so chill and know what they are doing.
Cassandra I think her name was led us on the ride and shared stories of the horses and pointed out land marks etc.
Me and my son loved it, wish we could of trotted etc but not allowed as the park rules don't allow it.

Our schedule the appointment online @ 9a, but was not riding til 10a (time allotted for prepping and debriefing). Left @ around 11a. Just a heads up for people on a time schedule. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable, answered every questions we had. Weather was overcast, but I imagine it to be hotter midday. Peaceful hour ride overlooking the city and Hollywood sign. Overall, would definitely recommend for anyone’s first time riding a horse!

The ladies at the ranch were so nice, they took good care of us. It was my first time on the horse and I was scared I won't lie - Izzy? I am very bad with names -she put me at ease she was so informative and being good company for the tour. She carried water for everyone, she was happy to take pictures she even asked if we want her to take a photo of us. How many pictures do you need? Enjoy the view people as it's outstanding. From another hand if you are going on tour in big group they need to keep an eye on everyone safety- great picture should not be a priority.
We really enjoyed! Thanks a lot ladies for creating a great memory for us!

It was absolutely horrifying to see the conditions that these animals were being kept in. There were horses on top of horses. The mud was so deep. Some of these horses couldn’t even get their hooves out of it. I had three teenagers with me and oh my God they were horrified by what they saw it was so sad and so disappointing I’ve never been to a horse ride that looked anything like this.

Please do not go. Please do not patronize such a poor operation.

Thank you for your feedback on your visit to Sunset Ranch. We deeply regret that your experience did not align with the high standards we set for ourselves, particularly in showcasing the care for our extended family of horses, whom we prioritize above all. Following the recent rains, we've observed areas with more persistent mud than usual. A photo you shared captures our immediate response, including bringing in sand to alleviate the muddy conditions. We're proactive in ensuring our horses’ comfort and safety, making necessary adjustments to their environment as quickly as possible. We also undergo regular inspections by animal control and other regulatory bodies to verify that our care practices exceed standard requirements. I’m pleased to report that an inspection conducted after your visit reaffirmed that our horses are well-cared for, healthy, and in good spirits. We understand the concerns raised by what you witnessed might stem from a lack of context regarding our thorough care and maintenance routines. Rest assured, we are committed to transparency and encourage any further questions about how we look after our horses. Your feedback is invaluable to us. It not only aids in our continuous improvement but also reinforces our dedication to providing the best care. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back, offering a firsthand view of our unwavering commitment to our horses' wellbeing. Sincerely, Sunset Ranch Management

I was really looking forward to this trail ride to see the Hollywood Sign, and it did not disappoint!
    Had such a great time!
Went on a 1 hour trail in the morning when it wasn't as hot. I hadn't been on a horse for a long time, and had never rode in a Western saddle before. The guides were really nice and explained everything so I knew exactly what I needed to do.
My horse Frosty was obviously a seasoned professional, he knew exactly what to do.
I had an amazing time and would recommend to anyone that wants to experience a trail ride in the Hollywood hills.

This one hour horseback ride was incredible! A "first" for my 12 year old daughter. I am "experienced" with moderate skills. The scenery was beautiful, including a glimpse of the Griffith Observatory. Horses were well cared for and knew the trail well. Staff was awesome. I would highly recommend this tour company!
