- charliecR8879HA00Fantastic, fantastic, fantasticWe had a fantastic evening on the food tour. Jim was great and took us to a range of different places, all of them authentic and delicious. He is very knowledgeable, not just on the food but on the history of the country which we found fascinating. Would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Shanghai. Thanks Jim, we had the best time.
- christinedI3207HS00Wonderful experienceWe had the best time on our tour with Jim. We loved how all the restaurants we visited were local places, and so many of them were hole-in-the-wall places that we’d never be able to find on our own! Jim was so kind and knowledgeable and had so much to share. We loved how the tour also included some history and a taste of local daily life. Jim was generous with his time and expertise, and we had an amazing morning with him. We’d recommend this tour for sure.
- Exploration78349800The BEST Shanghai Food Tour!I did a lot of research and was torn between two tours, but decided to go with this one because it seemed more focused on the food..brilliant decision because this tour was the highlight of my time in Shanghai! Jim was such a great guide - so patient, friendly, funny and knowledgeable. The food was amazing and Jim even had a few surprises for us ;) This tour is a must for anyone visiting Shanghai..thx again, Jim!
- oliversO8234YP00Excellent way of exploring ShanghaiThis tour is a must for any Shanghai visitor wanting to explore local food with an expert introduction by a local guide. Jim was excellent in explaining the origin of different foods, the history of the city and some buildings along the way. He introduced our small group to a varied selection of dumplings, noodles, fruit and skewers (including some Chinese brew), all of which were very tasty indeed. Jim also introduced us to team ceremony in a small, authentic shop which was a worthwhile addition to the tour. Overall, I can't rate this tour highly enough and will make sure to join Jim again next time I am in Shanghai.
- RaniJ77700Shanghai good tour with a localVena was very sweet. It was more than a good tour. We also walked through the gardens in between tasting. She was knowledgeable about the history and the dishes. We tried everything from dim sum to soup dumpling to Michelin star noodles and famous moon cake. She also shared personal insights on daily life of locals which was interesting. Thank you for spending afternoon with me
- 667danik00An incredible taste of Shanghai cuisine!Jim was a fantastic tour guide and took us on a wonderful breakfast adventure around the French concession neighbourhood of Shanghai. We got to eat, drink, learn history - and have a laugh. I would definitely recommend this to any foodies, and Jim is very knowledgeable about the neighbourhood thank you for an incredible day!
- NadiaL102200A must do food tour. We loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This was the best thing I’ve done in Shanghai. Jim is super knowledgeable about the local cuisine, Chinese history and culture. And so friendly and polite. Fantastic. Don’t eat before you go! Highly recommended.
- happybongo00Excellent!I have been on other foodtours in Shanghai during my previous visits. I can honestly say this is the best one. Jim is a local and gives you a local perspective not just on food but on the city itself. I learnt so much about food, history, beautful buildings and life in Shanghai. We had lots of food stops, everything from noodles, rice rolls, barbecue, dumplings of several types, micro brewery beer to a lovely tea session. Jim was really great, his English is excellent and he got us extras such as local ice cream and he ordered taxis when the weather was not kind to us. He also gave us tips on where to find the best breakfast xiaolongbao and crispy pancakes and we did find them the next morning on our own (and yes, they were superb!). The joining intructions were easy to follow, just make sure you read the signs for the correct subway exit (all stations in Shanghai have lots of exits but they are all clearly numbered so its easy). Overall this was a great experience and I thoroughly recommend it for anyone interested in food and culture.
- Curiosity3913187284900Great Food Tour! Loved itWe absolutely loved this tour. Jim and Dean our guides were knowledgeable, friendly and spoke great english. Everything was well organised and ran like clockwork. It's great to be taken into places that you would never find as an independent tourist. The restaurants that we visited were all of a great standard. Loved it all and highly recommend.
- Michael S00Great Food and Great InsightsThis was the second food tour I did with Jim and it was just as good as the first. I did the breakfast tour and would definitely recommend. He managed to juggle my timing constraints with the other guests, ensuring we didn’t miss out on any of the food stops. Jim has a great depth of knowledge of Shanghai and was able to walk us through some of the more interesting stories, including those of the rise of the Communist Party. All in, a great breakfast option
- NikkiB164900Excellent Food tourI had a lovely afternoon with Vena. We visited many places, all of which I would never have found on my own. We tried all types of traditional Chinese food and I really enjoyed walking around the city. Highly recommend when in Shanghai. Come hungry - we ate so much that I didn't need dinner that evening!
- Karen J00Excellent tour to discover hidden spots! The food tour was great - my guide showed me a lot of local spots that I would never have discovered or even tried otherwise. He was also very kind and patient with me when I had lots of questions about tea ceremonies and translated all my questions and added details. Can only recommend!
- Daydream0724507388300Great food, great beer, great sights, great guide!Went on this trip with my brother and it was fantastic! Jim showed us some authentic hidden gems around Shanghai that we would never have known about or found otherwise. It was so good to have an informative guide who made sure to share his love of local cuisine and history. Great food, great beer, great sights, great guide! We booked for another tour with Jim the following night...
- 155leightonb0010/10 tourAwesome tour, Jim our guide is very knowledgeable and fun to be around Amazing food and drinks Highly recommend Leighton from New Zealand
- IntrepidBackpack00The Food Tour to End all Food TorusWe went onto this food tour thinking it was just a simple foodie walk but we walked away with knowledge of occupied China, history of buildings, and even the current sentiment of people in Shanghai. Jim is not only a knowledgable guide, he's sharp as a tack and adjusts your tour based on how you're responding to certain elements. His passion for Shanghainese neighbourhoods and what they on offer shines through this tour, ever hopeful that the over gentrification of Shanghai does not push the mom and pop shops to the suburbs. Last and certainly not least the food introduced was the cleanest most refreshing tasting I've had in China. None of the food had an underlying stench of being days old or not being cleaned properly. I've personally bookmarked all the spots he's shown us on my maps so that I may always return to them should I choose. Highly recommend this tour and this guide. Best I've experienced in a long time.

This tour is really worthwhile because we sampled some fantastic food and because the guide gave us a lot of on-depth information through his stories about the food. We had some amazing Shanghai specialities, like steamed fried dumplings, steamed smaller dumplings (guotie) with pork and sea urchin, fabulous sizzling lamb skewers, and a lot more. We also sampled some excellent beer, who knew Shanghai had so many good beers? Highly recommend if you fancy a different view of Shanghai and Chinese food culture.

Jim's expertise and understanding of the local culture have left a deep impression on me. He passionately and patiently answered all of my questions and shared fascinating stories about the history, culture, and customs. His explanations enriched the entire journey and gave me a deeper appreciation of the place. Moreover, his knowledge of the local cuisine was unparalleled. He introduced me to the most authentic and delicious local dishes and accompanied me in savoring mouthwatering delicacies. Each dish left a lasting impression, allowing me to taste the true essence of the cuisine. His recommendations were absolutely perfect, and I feel fortunate to have had him as my guide.

Fantastic evening walking around some offbeat areas of Shanghai to small resturants and small beer bar that, as a tourist, you probably wouldn't visit. Jimmy the tour guide, a local, spoke great English and kept the whole evening interesting with easy conversation about Shanghai, the local food and China in general. Food and drink is a insight to an areas culture and this was a great sample. Would definitely recommend!

If you are new to Shanghai and wanting to try some local food, this is a great tour! Ding was very knowledgeable about the local food and culture and answered all of my (many) questions. It was a fun way to spend an evening and also get to see different parts of the city as well. Would definitely recommend!

I’m glad I was able to get this last minute booking. It was excellent and well worth it.
Our guide Jim is warm, friendly and knowledgeable. We had different kinds of dumplings. Now I have my new favorite dumplings and they are the Shanghai dumplings. I think we ate 7-8 types of local dishes and we also tried this pretty good craft beer (Flipping Mango Hazy IPA).
Thank you for offering this excellent tour. I highly recommend it!

The first of my two food tours with Jim and this one had a second guide in Jade, who was also great fun. They made me feel very welcome as the only solo traveller with a group of colleagues and ensured I was able to get back to my hotel from our destination without issue. The food on this particular tour was great and eye-opening in equal measure, and a few beers, IPAs and spirits later, it was an evening well spent

Very nice tour with a young student. I learned a lot a bout culture, food and places to go in the city. Very easy going. Felt more like hanging out with a friend and share different food. Exactly what I was hoping for.

I booked today's event, however I cancelled a couple hours later. The cancellation email states no refunds. Will I still be able to attend since I did not get my refund?

My guess is that it will be fine if you show up but better to email Lu and let him know that you are coming. I have his direct email but the website algorithm is so good it would not let me post any variation of it.

Would you recommend this tour as well when you don’t eat any fish or shell food?

Yes.
No fish at all and just few sea food. You will have other options when sea food comes.

Would love to take this tour but I have celiac and can’t eat gluten so eating in China is always a challenge , are there any gluten free options in this tour that I can have while my friends enjoy gluten galore ?
Tejas G

Doubt it. The language problem is severe!! Stick to meat and fish only. Don’t trust in the ability of your guide to be able to ensure it is gluten free. Remember soya sauce is not necessarily gluten free

Does the guide do pick ups at hotels? I’m traveling alone, not comfortable with taking subway or transportation by myself.

No, but you meet him at the French Concession. Taking a taxi is very safe and inexpensive. Your hotel can get you a taxi and tell the driver where to take you. Shanghai is very safe. We were two women and felt very comfortable walking all around. We were never hassled and most people were happy to help us if we got lost.
