About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 168alicej0 contributionsGo-to English speaking tour guides of ShanghaiNewman Tours has been our go-to for well-researched and interactive tours in Shanghai, since we started with their French Concession & Bund tours back in 2018. In 2019 we signed up for the Jewish ghetto tour, History of China in 50 objects tour (Shanghai Museum), and Suzhou day tour which were just as impressive! It's clear that George and the staff put significant effort into making the tours as efficient, historically accurate, and, most importantly, fun, as possible. I strongly recommend them to any visitor or even Shanghai resident.Written 30 March 2020
- Luckyron770 contributionsGreat tour of the BundWe booked a private tour of the Bund for a school trip in Shanghai and are so glad we used Newman tours. George our tour guide was incredibly knowledgable and entertaining and was able to tailor the tour expertly to the children (who were teenagers and not always easily engaged). The students were interested and asked many questions which George was able to answer well. Newman tours also sent extra guides as we had a large group, which was a nice touch. This really was a fantastic tour and I will definitely use Newman tours in the future, even if I am not taking a school group.Written 8 February 2020
- A9816MEmarkh0 contributionsGeorge of the Bund!!We met George last November for a day tour. He was thoroughly knowledgeable about Chinese culture and equally interesting to listen to. Their company is very professional. We look to forward to meeting them again on a future trip.Written 27 January 2020
- X5319ZRsharonw0 contributionsShanghai Jewish heritage tourGeorge was very knowledgeable and pleasant guide. We had a very interesting tour to Jewish museum, Jewish quarter, sinagog . All was coupled with great stories , pleasant companion while commuting from place to place. George and his company are most recommended, Realy top guide.Written 24 January 2020
- G5757QXdaniel0 contributionsWonderful Suzhou Day Tour with George! We signed up for the full day tour to Suzhou and had a wonderful experience. We met George, our lovely guide, at Hongqiao station and took the bullet train to Suzhou. A local driver met us there and we then visited Tiger Hill, the beautiful Suzhou Museum and the Humble Administrators Garden, besides having a delicious lunch in a traditional restaurant and a stroll around the old town area. George gave us many insights and was able to answer our myriad questions. Our kids (6 and 9) also enjoyed the tour a lot. It was a great day out and when back in Shanghai we'd definitely book another tour from Newman Tours!Written 19 January 2020
- MVMLon0 contributionsShanghai Newman toursWe were in shanghai for a layover and came across Newman’s Tours. Clyde was a brilliant, engaging and well informed guide who brought to life the history of the Jewish people during the war in Shanghai. He was able to keep the interest of my teenage kids. Strongly recommend!Written 7 January 2020
- CarlosL16240 contributionsTotally worth it!I did the Ancient Shanghai Tour with George. Very poised, knowledgeable and entertaining, plus answered all my questions. The gardens and the Daoist temple were mesmerizing. Great value per money!Written 1 December 2019
- Bettybooo0 contributionsKung Fu tourReally interesting, the guide is knowledgable and passionate, and you get to do some kung fu - in the rain!! There is also an interactive fun challenge section in the bottom of the museum where you can test your balance, agility reactions and wu shi! If you went to the museum without the guide bringing it alive you would not get much out of it.Written 16 July 2019

- Karen P0 contributionsAmazing ghost tour for families: highly recommendFascinating ghost tour around the Jing’an temple area of Shanghai including modern buildings, older areas and nearly gardens and parks. The 2 1/2 hour which initially I thought might be in the long side for my 2 boys aged 10 and 12 flew by and was so captivating. Great ghost stories from throughout history but linked to modern day Shanghai for example we learned some fascinating ghost stories which explained some shapes of buildings in the shanghai modern skyline. For me what u loved was that the ghost stories also gave us a real insight into Chinese culture and history. For example, we came away with interesting insights into China during World War II and new knowledge about Chinese dragons. Tour was delivered in a top notch manner. Our guide was a native English streaker and really engaging in the way he spoke about the stories and it was detailed but fast paced enough to keep us captivated. Perfect for families with the interactive activities e.g drawing Chinese characters with big brushes, using iPad to show us relevant pictures and clips. By far best tour we booked in China - no hesitation about recommending and wished we had booked more tours for other cities with this company.Written 21 April 2019
- BrooklynExplorer10 contributionsGreat Bund TourWe took an excellent Bund tour with David. He was knowledgeable and personable and it was also interesting to learn about the life of an expat in Shanghai. I'm interested in Art Deco and David pointed out many interesting features of different buildings. I was looking for a real history of the Bund and it's buildings and David provided that wonderfully as well as many other interesting information about Shanghai in general.Written 9 April 2019

- Jacebaby0 contributionsThe PERFECT Tour Experiences!!!!The highlights of our first visit to Shanghai were our two Newman tours!!! Both of our private tours, The Bund and a combo of Zhujiajiao Canal Town and the Former French Concession, were lead by David, who not only is fun and charismatic, but definitely knows his history!! Boy were we ever enlightened on the history of this glorious city. The charming George joined us on our second tour, providing additional historical insight. We couldn’t have had more enjoyable guides than David and George, who answered our zillions of questions and remained completely flexible, so that we could focus on the parts of Shanghai which interested us most. Truly, tours don’t get any better than this!Written 20 March 2019
- damo4100 contributionsA great experience - thoroughly recommend! Was on a Newman tours activity in Beijing today, Daniel is a great host! He's very warm and friendly, eager to share his knowledge with great communication skills. The tour overran by an hour as we were all so keen to know more and our host was more than willing to take his time. I thoroughly recommend Newman tours and look forward to attending future events here in Beijing.Written 16 March 2019

I was lucky enough to take the Past, Present and Future tour with George and Clay followed by the Gangster Tour the following day with George. It was a great experience. George is very knowledgable on the history of Shanghai. Furthermore, on the gangster tour, he brought a gangster attitude, props and games for us to further enjoy the tour. I would highly recommend taking either of the tours! One suggestion might be instead of stopping for coffee perhaps allow time to stop at a traditional snack shop or restaurant. Other than that great job Newman Tour and give George a bonus!

I arranged for my friends and I to go on the Bund and French Concession Tour in Shanghai and was extremely happy I did. It was one of the best things we did! The tour is interesting, educational, funny and enlightening. It’s not too long and the guides are really friendly and very knowledgeable. Both guides came with ipad computers to show us pictures and maps of the people and places they mentioned. They also take you into some of the buildings they talk about and show places you’d never see otherwise. If you want to go on a tour or even debating doing it, I would highly recommend them.

Luke led me and two new expat friends on a private Gangster Tour through part of the old French Concession. From the beginning to the end he enthralled us with stories of times gone by that will stay with us as we roam the area over the next years here in Shanghai.
As a westerner living in China, it is important that as you walk the streets of Shanghai you know some of the stories of times gone by. The good, the bad, the ugly. It transforms Shanghai and your feeling towards the city completely.
I highly recommend this experience for visitors, and even more so for people making their home in the city.
Thanks to Newman Tours and Luke for making our experience unforgettable.

I read the rave reviews on tripadvisor so I email an enquiry to Newman tours when planning my upcoming Shanghai trip. I was interested in the Gangster Tour but it was unavailable during my time in Shanghai and so i joined the French Concession Tour instead.
It was a rainy day but our guide Luke was wonderful. He was enthusatic and he made good use of technology (ipad) and stories to make the entire tour interesting and engaging. If not for him, i would not have thought of stepping into some of the buildings to look at and appreciate the history of the place. Luke really makes history comes alive!
I would say that joining the tour made my Shanghai experience more meaningful then simply shopping and eating. It definitely takes sight seeing to a whole new level.

Newman Tours sent us Molly and Luke for a 2-hour tour of the former Jewish Ghetto and the Refugee Museum/Synagogue followed by a 2-hour tour of the former French concession.
Both guides were very nice, well-informed, interesting, and had a good sense of humor. We found the tour to be very informative and worth the money. They carried an i-pad so they could illustrate their talks with photographs and maps.
We plan to schedule another tour with them when we return to Shanghai.

My mum and I enjoyed this tour immensely. The guides Katerina and Hannah were extremely informative and full of personality. I have lived in Shanghai for 18 months and have been meaning to explore the buildings along this strip and I am really glad I chose a guided tour rather than to go on my own as you learn so much more. Highly recommended.

Daniel provided a fantastic customized tour for us. We were interested in the architecture and land planning aspects of Shanghai. Daniel made sure to do pre-work ahead of time and was very knowledgeable on this specific topic. He is a great storyteller leveraging his iPad and Mac as supplements along the way. Highly Recommended!!

In Shanghai the buildings do tell the history. The walking tours were a terrific way to get around the French Concession and get a sense of the history.
The start points were easy to find. The walking pace was well judged. The tour guides had a good sense of history.

Like others, I have been living in or around Shanghai for years but had always wanted to know more about those grand old buildings I constantly passed on the street. Also, as I had always traveled solo, the idea of a group or "planned" tours, had, until last Saturday, held little appeal.
The tour, led by Jay, was interesting from the get go. Jay is an extremely friendly and knowledgeable person who has a passion for his work and we (the group) was immediately engaged.
The tour covers a lot of the older hotels and other landmarks and gives insights into why they were socially, culturally or historically significant. Jay had a tablet which provided additional information or photographs of the individuals who influenced concession-era Shanghai.
I would definitely recommend this 2-hour tour. It flew and I was disappointed when I looked at my watch and the two hours were gone.

Newman tours is very organized and easy to work with. Their guides are personable and informative.
I was a bit disappointed by the tour itself. It included a great deal of looking at exterior building architecture, but actually entry into only two (currently hotels).
I did gain a better understanding of Shanghai history, but I think this would be better enjoyed by a professional architect.
