About
Known to many as ‘one of the largest slums in Asia’, we prefer to think of Dharavi as Mumbai’s beating heart. Through our educational walking tours, visitors experience a wide range of these business activities: recycling, pottery-making, embroidery, bakery, soap factory, leather tanning, poppadom-making and many more. We’ll also visit the residential areas of Dharavi. People from all over India have come to live in Dharavi, making it a microcosm of India. Our 2 hour+ introduction to Dharavi aims to give visitors a much more nuanced understanding of life and work in Mumbai slums. In the afternoon we will show you other, more traditional sights that Mumbai has to offer This tour is individually designed for you, and you can do and see as little or as much as you please. The tour guide, who also has detailed knowledge of the more traditional sights, will be with you for the day. He/she can give some suggestions for what to see, but ultimately, the itinerary is completely up to you

We had been priviliged to take a private day tour in Mumbai, in between flights, with Raj and a very nice driver whose name I regretfully forgot ( this was over 2 weeks ago). We were fascinated by the wealth of knowledge of Raj and totally enjoyed his kindness, patience and openess to our endless questions and specific requests. The sites picked were all very interesting and we have learned a lot about different aspects of the city. We also enjoyed nice breakfast and lunch in local restaurants during the tour. After asking Raj to have a quick visit to Dharavi before getting back to the airport for our next flight we had found ourselves enjoying tea in a natural way at his parents home there! To us this tells the whole story of Reality Tours. It was a special day and we are thankful for it.

Our Tour Guide, Sam, guided us with great knowledge and insight. We really enjoyed walking through the tiny alleys, meeting the people who lived there, and witnessing the incredible industry of Dharavi. We were mesmerised by the rooftop visit and so pleased to meet the staff at Reality Tours. So many highlights along the way, but perhaps the one that we talk about the most is the delicious street food Sam introduced us to - so divine! Thank you, Sam, for an enlightening and extremely enjoyable tour. We have recommended you to many!

What an important time we had with Reality tours in the Dharavi slum. Our guide Pradeep was amazing, picked us up, saw sites on the way, answered questions, even rode the train together! Slum was difficult, heartwarming, jolting, such an array of feelings in one small area with one billion people living a unique way of life - despite the poverty, hard at work. Thank you Reality tours for a very real, authentic and moving experience.

We arranged a day in Dharavi through Reality Tours.

From the outset the service was outstanding. Excellent communication and responses to emails and queries etc.

Even though our flight into Dharavi was delayed, our driver was waiting for us at the airport.

We spent a few hours touring Dharavi - we went to the plastics yard, the pottery, the leathers section, the community square, we walked through markets and we finished off by going to lunch at our guides mothers' house. She cooked us a delicious lunch and it was a pleasure to spend time with his family.

You read so much about the squalor and deprivation in Dharavi but that wasn't our experience at all. There is such a sense of community. At every corner there is a cricket match, or a game of bat and ball, or a group huddled around a board game. Everyone was welcoming and friendly and keen to talk to us.

We were with our two teenage sons who were invited to join a street cricket match which was fantastic.

I would highly recommend this experience to anyone and big thanks especially to our guide Raj and his wonderful family.

We combined the Slum tour with the Transportation tour in the morning and the whole day was an incredible experience. Our guide Chetan (Cham) was fantastic and good company. Having lived on the slums for 13 years he was able to give a great insight to life there and was able to shows us many hidden corners. It was a humbling visit.

Really enjoyed this tour. We did sightseeing in the morning and the slum tour in the afternoon. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting for us. I can not believe how much we saw in a day. We came from a cruise ship and pick up was from the port.We were then transported to our evening group walking tour, which made life easy. Would highly recommend

Really enjoyed our tour. We did the sightseeing first and then the slum tour after lunch. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and local so knew about his topic. The driver was great too. We started with viewing and explanation of the commercial laundry and went from there. Our tour guide was very patient.
The only negative which was small, because the food was great, was that the restaurant we stopped at for lunch didn’t do any drinks other than water and a milk drink which we found too sour. Not even tea. Not to worry, down nearby back streets there was somewhere we could buy a soda.
The tour of the slum was very educational and is a real insight into people making the best of a situation and in doing so being very creative and contributing to the area income as well as well as their own. Hugely enjoyed the whole day.

Fantastic insight as to how this enchanting city operates. We started with the transportation tour that had us going on and off trains to parts of the city that we would never have dreamed of visiting. Our guide Janna was amazing and really pushed us into experiencing the world he lives in.
The slum was unlike any I have visited around the world and the hard work that the people live their do is amazing. It’s not for the feint hearted but you are greeted by smiling kids along the way. If we can influence their future in a small way the that’s great. The fact that reality gives so much back to the community is an added bonus.
