I watched documentary about his charity on Amazon Prime (Gringo Favelado). I wanted to make donations to Favela Phoenix English School. Here was his response.
Very "polite".

An enriching and thoroughly enjoyable experience
Absolutely fantastic tour from start to finish.

Before booking our party of four were a little apprehensive about taking the tour. We are informed that the Flavela’s are not safe places to go and to stay away, this could have not been further from the truth.

Our guide Carlos was born and raised in Flavela Rocinha and made our tour complete.

His English was good and whenever he talked to a local in Portuguese he explained what they were talking about which really put us at ease.

The tour started with a motorcycle taxi ride to the top of the Flavela which was a little crazy in places for 5 real per person.

We then meandered down the Flavela speaking with the locals, though alley ways and down the streets. Everyone we met was happy to talk to us and greeted us well.

The school was a highlight and the work that they are doing their is great.

Carlos was able to speak fluent English and was able to answer all of our questions about life in Rio, the history of the people their and what life was like growing up in Flavela Rocinha.

Carlos’s knowledge and passion for the area he lives is incredible and we would no doubt recommend both him and the Flavela Phoenix tour to others.

Obrigado Carlos. Great memories and we hope to come back again one day. Keep in touch.

Memorable in so many ways

An absolute highlight of my visit to Rio this tour is unmissable for anyone who wants to learn about day to day life in the favelas. My guide Carlos (who grew up in Rocinha) was everything you could ask for - knowledgeable, friendly, considerate, funny with excellent English. The tour is conducted in a sensitive, respectful manner where the visitor is made to feel both safe and welcomed. I felt privileged to have an insight into a community of hardworking, friendly people and the tour certainly dispels a lot of myths about life in the favelas. I cannot recommend this tour enough - the memories (all positive) will stay with me for a very long time.

So interesting and enlightening
We chose this favela tour as we wanted a tour led by a local resident and that’s exactly what we got. Our guide Carlos was born, raised and still lives in Rocinha. He speaks excellent English and was very helpful, informative and interesting.
He met us at our hotel in Copacabana and took us by metro to the bottom of the favela. From there we got on the back of moto taxis ( basically pillion passengers 1 each on the back of small motorbikes) .
This was the scariest part of the day for me- I’m not a fan of motorbikes and the road up was steep, windy and very busy.
From the top we took a gradual walk down through alleys, roads etc stopping at view points and talking on the way about how life is in the favela. Everyone we saw was friendly and we felt very safe. We met a few chatted to locals- mainly children, who were keen to practice their English
We saw a local martial arts display and finished with a tasty lunch in a cafe.

Safe and informative
Aug 2019
I booked this tour as I wanted to see the favela on foot and see more detail. It was a great experience and led by a knowledgeable and informative guide. At no point did I feel unsafe and I was able to get a sense of the life there with some amazing views to boot. The tour was quiet (only 3 of us) which meant we got a personal touch and we wer able to ask lots of questions. I rely enjoyed it and would recommend a walking tour over a jeep ride as apparently the locals don't appreciate being ogled at from a Jeep as if they are safari animals. Which is understandable!
It was great to see the English School too and see inside the building.

Rochina walking tour
Jul 2019 • Friends
We did this tour with Carlos in July
We travelled all around South America (from the Amazon to Bolivia) and by far this was one of the most ‘realistic’//nit touristic things to do
It was amazing! Real Authentic
Carlos himself lives in the favela and therefore literally knew every in and out of the area - we went underground overground through ground!
Totally would recommend and the price is so cheap for the quality of the tour!

Sunrise Hike through Favela do Vidigal
Jul 2019 • Friends
This was my second time to Rio de Janeiro and my first time actually getting to hike through a favela (the communities that is also home to many low-to-middle income families, especially 1/3 of Rio residents) - and absolutely would consider this one of the top 3 activities I have ever done in my life!
Obi was our tour guide, who lives in the Rocinha community, and has been doing this for 5 years. He was very prompt in contacting me and even kindly rescheduled my tour for the next day since my original tour date it had rained, causing the hillside to be too slippery to hike.
We met him at 5am, took motobikes up the favela and began hiking for about 30-45 mins to witness the most incredible sunrise at the top of the Dos Irmaos mountains. We got to know him as he got to know my friends and I and it was the best way to begin our day. On the way down, we walked through the community and we were able to see Brazil in a different light, firsthand, which was absolutely incredible to experience. He took so many pictures and videos of us - he ensured our safety and satisfaction!

I highly recommend it for an alternative view of Rio and a nonconventional way to get to know the city. It is safe and was relatively well priced! My friends and I left very happy with how the tour ended up to be - better than expected!

Mountain hike/favela tour

An unexpected but good half day tour. Jody the guide made the climb look easy although it’s my first. Exceptional and breathtaking view of Rio 550 meters above. The tour down the Rochinha favela is unforgettable. Jody makes you feel safe and secure. Recommended.

A great experience with a great guide. Not to be missed when in Rio!

Before going to Rio, I knew that I wanted to visit a favela but I felt worried about safety since I thought that favelas are dangerous and unwelcoming of foreigners. I was even discouraged by my guesthouse owner to go to one. Good thing I did not listen!

This favela tour led by Jody is the highlight of my Rio trip. There is more to Rio than just the glitzy parts and I highly encourage everyone to step outside the comfortable bubble of Ipanema and Copacabana. I feel that my Rio experience won't be complete without visiting a favela.

It was very interesting to hear both the historical context of the favela and at the same time Jody's personal lived experiences in the favela. Many would think that these tours are like 'poverty tourism', but in reality, it felt like visiting a friend's neighborhood. The moment I met Jody, I felt at ease and I knew I was in good hands.

I am also into photography and this tour is great for those who want to take photos of the 'real' and 'raw' parts of Rio. Jody is quick to advice when to shoot and when not to shoot.

All in all, I could not recommend this highly enough! The tours are small and intimate and I prefer this over big favela tours.
