This was from start to finish a fantastic experience and one I'd highly recommend. After being met nearby by our guide, we were walked to a traditional house nearby. Here we met with our host/interpreter who talked us through the experience and the house and history of the samurai.
We then got changed into traditional Japanese dress, before a demonstration, after which we were let loose with a Samurai sword. We got lots of time with the sword and chance to practice and try and slice through bamboo. The company at this point we great, not only with the instruction and support, but also by taking photos which they mailed over for free so we could remember the experience. This was a great touch and really made it.
The second part of the experience was a chance to learn and practice Zen - something I wasn't too sure about beforehand, but something I found I enjoyed.
We were helped that there was only the 2 of us booked.
Everyone was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and it felt authentic in comparison to other experience out there (i.e one in a shopping center) and I would highly recommend.

Being a resident of Japan for many years, I definitely wanted to avoid the cheesy tourist trap kind of places.
So I booked this place after reading various reviews (from others who were looking to avoid the same).

Lucky for me, I was the only person in attendance (thanks Omicron), so I was able to receive amazing one on one tuition from the modern day samurai’s who occupied the residence.
The main samurai/trainer being Masato. A man who has been training in various martial arts, including Kendo, Iaido, and Kenpo) since the age of 3.

The translator (and person who picked me up) was a warm and wonderful lady from America, named Elle. She was a great host, her translation skills were on point (properly explaining what the trainers were saying, and not looking for any shortcuts), who also happily filmed all of my flimsy attempts at cutting through the bamboo stacks.

Definitely worth booking once you get a chance, whether your an international or domestic tourist.
Also worth much more than the price they ask you to pay.

You have to do this if you come to Kyoto. After being greeted at the door by our host who was also the translator, we started by being dressed in the traditional Samurai clothing and then we were told of the history of the house we were in and the history of the samurai. We were then treated to a demo of the katana. After that we got to use the katana after practising first. Then finally we meditated and then listened to one of the gents play a traditional wooden flute.
We were blown away by how good this was and would definitely recommend this to anyone coming to Kyoto. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. They even took loads of professional photos and sent them to our email. A++

The performance by the 3 gentlemen really put my mind in Japanese history. Then the sensei's patient and clear instructions helped me internalize my moves. The catana portion was exceptional and the closing zen brought me back to earth!!!!!

Our family of two adults, two teens and a 10 yo all had a blast at our Samurai experience. The experience was done in Japanese with an english translator. We arrived already dressed in full authentic kimonos from a remote "costume" shop, but they provided black yukatas for the guests who arrived in street clothes. In retrospect we should have passed on the full kimono treatment that our travel agent had arranged because it was too much trouble and took too long (over an hour). But that was not the Kyoto Samurai Experience's fault.

We thoroughly enjoyed the authentic samurai house and garden it was held in (one of the few remaining), the demonstration, training and especially the chance to swing a sharp and real samurai blade to cut a rolled up bamboo tatami mat. Our 10 yo was given an appropriate sized blade and since she was smaller got to slice a huge Japanese radish instead. I was a little nervous about having our kids handle such a long and sharp blade, but the first part of the training was handling wooden replicas to get comfortable with the weight and size.

We and they took great photos and movies, and they took excellent care of everyone. They emphasized that being a samurai was not just about swordplay but also about meditation which we all did after the sword experience. They also called a couple of cabs for us after the session, which was very helpful. The whole experience was very well done and family friendly so I'd highly recommend it!

I had booked this experience for myself and my two adult children. We were met at the train station by two members of the samurai experience staff and escorted to the location. One of the Staff (Rino) told us what the experience would consist of.

The group was about 12 children and adults and we were all dressed in traditional Japanese robes to begin with. We were shown around the traditional Samurai house, had a demonstration of the use of the samurai sword by an expert. It was very impressive. We then were shown the proper technique for handling a samurai sword and how to use it to cut through objects using a wooden practice sword.

The highlight of the experience was getting to use a real sword to slice through a rolled up bamboo mat. Every member of the group took turns to slice the mat into several pieces while being instructed by Taisuke.

There was then a question and answer session with Taisuke which was very instructive and informative.

Finally there was a lead zen meditation session where we learned the purpose of and technique of meditation.

All the staff were very welcoming, approachable and knowledgeable and photographs were taken throughout the experience and shared afterwards by email.

This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience and I highly recommend it.

This generous, thoughtful, concise, informative and educational cultural experience was the best we've had in Japan. Truly amazing. Adults and our children alike were given the chance to learn all about Samurai history and culture and, under proper expert guidance, the chance to cut an item using a real sword (not easy, some participants unable to do it), following by an amazing meditation experience (my husband is not a meditator and still thought it was incredible). Our journey took place in a real and ancient Samurai palace house. The teaching was in Japanese with a respectful and appropriate interpreter. High quality pictures were emailed to us free of charge. In any other country you'd be charged for these extras. In any other country children would not be allowed and treated with this respect. Truly an amazing day - thank you so very much for sharing this incredible experience with our family. 10 out of 10.

The experience was really cool. It is a located in a real ancient samurei home, you get to wear samurei clothes and get a good idea of the samurei. The coolest part is to lead a katana yourself and the zen meditation afterwards.
Everyone is super friendly and the explanations are in perfect english (simultaneous translation by an american women).

Taisuke and the team at Kyoto Samurai Experience transported us into the world of the Samurai from the moment we entered their historic Samurai mansion. This was a great family activity. Our 11 and 13 year old loved the opportunity to wield a real Samurai sword. The entire experience was well timed and there were several special touches which made the experience very enjoyable. We would highly recommend this activity to anyone who wants a unique cultural experience in Kyoto.

My 15 year old son and 11 year old son and I went to the together.

The Katanas were real and we were all allowed to cut through thick bamboo and daikon/radish with the instruction of a samurai sword expert.

Our guide was fluent in English and very very informative.

The ambience of the experience was authentic. A tatami style home from a samurai family.

Another family had a daughter and mother there also so it is for the entire family.

The experience gave us a true feeling of going back in time whole wearing samurai clothing and will be a shared lifelong memory for the three of us.
