- 375lachlanp00ExcellentExcellent trip, our guide Alonso was an incredible wealth of knowledge. A truly wonderful experience.
- Cassie L00Amazing TourThis tour was such an amazing experience. Our guide Alex and boat captain Jose we’re both phenomenal. I can’t recommend this enough. We saw four mama whales and their calves and they gave us plenty of time to enjoy and take it all in. We also saw a pod of over 100 dolphins playing around and we got so up close and personal with them, but with enough respect for that the captain knew what he was doing. This tour was one of my favorite of all time.
- kennydesmondncp00good cp valuethe price is really reasonable given it covers hotel pickup and whale watching. They will try to ship close to the whale so you can see it clear
- E3835QYjuanr00The best Experience!!The best people, excellent organization, we see a lot of whales and swim near an island in a natural coral pool. We recommend this experience to everyone! Thanks Mario for this unforgettable experience.
- ava16800Whale of a time!Mario and the captain took us on an amazing whale watch tour while we were in Panama. We started with a nice cruise along the coast and enjoyed amazing views of the city line. Then we headed out near a couple of islands and we saw some sea turtles. As we got further out into the ocean, we saw a whale from afar but since out boat was not too big, we were able to get very close to the whale. We followed this whale around for a while until it was time to head back to shore. On our way back we saw two whales, one mommy and one baby. We followed this pair for over an hour and we watched in awe each time they came up for air. We were able to get very close to them. It was truly an amazing tour and Mario and his Captain knew exactly where to take us to find the whales. We had a whale of a time! Thank you.
- elysial201900Incredible experienceWe had an amazing experience on the Valle de Anton tour. Abel was our guide and Brian was our driver. Brian was a good driver, felt safe in his hands. Abel was incredible! He told us all about Valle de Anton and helped create a custom tour with us and the other 2 people on our tour. He gave us all the options and described everything and after we picked the 5 activities we wanted to do. He then took us for the best day! We went to the top of the valley for a scenic view of the crater. We went to the waterfall, the butterfly garden, the frog sanctuary, the local artisan market, and the thermal pools. He also took us to an amazing restaurant for lunch. Abel was excellent! Really enjoyed a perfect day in Panamá
- marc f00Whale Watching!!It was perfect. We lucked out and saw two whales and a calf. The ride is fun! Mario and his pilot have eagle eyes. Navigating through the big ships heading to the canal is fascinating and just beyond where they gather, it seems the humpback whales gather. I will absolutely go again.
- joyful115800Just Around the River BendWe ventured “just around the river bend” several times (like Pocahontas) on a serene motor canoe ride. We soon came upon a small, tranquil and welcoming Embera village. Highly recommended for nature lovers and those who can appreciate being educated about a precious, preserved culture. Lunch was delicious and dancing so enlightening! Recommended to take smaller money notes to purchase hand-crafted trinkets, if so desired.
- JGR00100A rainy but still very nice day out to the Aqua Clara Locks and San Lorenzo FortWe traveled on a five-plus hour private tour of the Aqua Clara Locks and the San Lorenzo Fort, with Abel Montol of Almiza Tours. These two places lay on the Atlantic Ocean side of the country, near Colon, the second most important city in Panama after Panama City. Abel, who is of Indian, Spanish and Panamanian descent, was an elementary school teacher until he decided to take up guiding two years ago, first on part-time basis for half a year then full time since. Abel arrived on time, with a new comfortable Kia sedan. Colon is nearly an hour away from Panama City and all that time, he regaled us with information on the history of the country which we highly appreciated. He had an easy-speaking style that we found very comfortable and his wealth of information was impressive. In Colon, he stopped at a grocery store to get us water and snacks, all complimentary. It was raining hard so we were afraid that the day’s tour was going to be a wash out. He did manage our expectations by explaining that the north or Atlantic side of the country was mostly rainforest so it got a lot more rain than the south or Pacific side. We did the Aqua Clara Lock visit first since he found out that there was a container ship already in the lock and another one coming. We were able to catch site of the first ship and then waited for the second mega-ship to cross. All the time, he was briefing us on additional history of the lock expansion. On the way to the Lorenzo Fort, the rain came down hard again and once again, we were apprehensive. But the rain stopped when we got there so another blessing for us. Abel took our pictures every time we would ask him. In a few cases, he would be the one to point out a photo opp spot and he would ask for the camera. Abel was very respectful to all the canal and fort administrators and guards which I found refreshing. He was extremely accommodating and highly service-oriented. We were so impressed with his guiding. He’s certainly a great asset to the country.
- Tylermuir00Paradise Near PanamáWe had a great time on our excursion! Mario included pickup and drop off from our Airbnb which was great to have handled. The two secluded islands were beautiful and amazing to experience. We didn’t expect such beautiful water and white sand beaches. We snorkelled and were able to see turtles, various fish and dolphins. We briefly caught sight of whales as well! Mario and crew were fun and a pleasure to hang out with for the day. Being that it is an open sea excursion, you are bound to weather and the boat we had taken was not large. If you are unfit or afraid of water, you are better off to choose a ferry to the islands but you will miss out on all the fun in between. We would definitely tour with Mario again! Thank you!
- carter133300An encompassing tour to explore a unique area of Panama! The tour allows you to do a variety of activities during the trip including hikes, thermal pools, wildlife experiences, historical locations, etc. While not for everyone, you and your group decide what you want to do throughout the day, making it a more fluid and less structured experience. I would recommend this tour as it’s a great way to explore a different area of the country outside the city
- Christiane W00Great day trip with lots of fun activitiesWe very much Enjoyed our day trip to El Valle Anton with various stops to view wildlife, take a bath in the thermal waters and enjoy a good lunch
- tara234500Must do in PanamaDefinitely do this trip. The drive and hike was lovely, not ‘easy’ but not tough, however, I would recommend to all people wear hiking boots, for grip but also feet protection, no need for water shoes on this. We left at 7:30am and were back to the city around 4pm. Abel is a fantastic guide and fun guy, our group had a great day. We hiked, ate lunch in the town, did the springs (I just did my legs and face, bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to go all in), and the snake sanctuary. Bring at least $30 cash so you can get lunch (~$8) and buy something from the market. So glad I did this, highlight of my Panama trip!
- DianaMagicMoose00History TourThis tour is full of history. I booked this excursion for my husband who did not get to go. We watched a boat in the locks, rode around and saw lots of scenery. Stopped at the fort which was very hot but had nice views. Our rain forest viewing was a disappointment. We did not walk thur anywhere only drove. The driver did stop when someone spotted an animal. I would have enjoyed it more if we could have had a small hike. You miss so much being on a bus zooming around. If you are a history buff then this trip is for you!
- Kni687000May tripPick up from cruise terminal was ok. We went to Aqua Clara locks first to learn about the canal and the expansion which was good. You pay $10 admission fee. The excursion included the rain forest but it was a drive through and not what we were expecting. Limited explanation of the flora and fauna at the side of the road and lack of animals to see. The fort was nice, with lovely lake views.

A perfect trip that was worth waking up by 7 AM to do, well worth the money. You'll be driven up to the town of Gamboa and will stop at an amazing local restaurant, during the drive the guides will tell you all about the islands and the monkeys there. Then you'll get in a motorboat and go up the Panama Canal to the several islands and will spend about 2 hours boating around them. A word of advice, don't spend the whole time taking pictures, take some time to take in the scenery, and you'll see plenty of monkeys. The fact that they provide transportation from Panama City is a huge bonus, because private cabs to/from Gamboa are about $25 each way otherwise. Don't miss out on this tour!!! Two people in my tour group were spending part of their only day in Panama City doing this tour, and it was well worth it to them.

We really wanted to like this tour, but at the end of the day it was a waste of time and money. After a long bus ride to the starting point, where you pick up several people along the way at different hotels, you arrive at a lake where there is a boat waiting to take you on a two hour ride. There are no bathrooms at the dock area or on the boat, so prepare to hold your bladder for quite a while. The boat ride to where you hope to see monkeys is about 20 minutes long. Yes, you will definitely see some monkeys, but the majority of them will be far away, way up in the trees, and difficult to appreciate. As we arrived at the first stop, they handed out peanuts and asked everyone to put approximately four of them in your hand. At that point, the boat gets very close to the edge of the lake and the guide starts making some monkey sounds to try to attract them. The problem was, no monkeys came out. There are also several other boats in the area, trying to do the same thing. After another stop or two, some monkeys did appear, and as soon as they did, other boats rushed over competitively to try to take advantage of the feeding opportunity. The other boat had bananas, which were much more attractive to the monkeys, and a young boy gave them way too big a piece, so they grabbed it and disappeared soon after. They were not interested in the peanuts. After a while, it got quite boring because very few monkeys came down. My girlfriend was so bored that she actually fell asleep for a while. We did see a few monkeys way up in the trees, but a visit to the zoo would be far more entertaining. Finally, after hours of trying, a monkey did come down and jump on the roof of our boat, came down below for a second, grabbed a couple of peanuts, and quickly disappeared. Seriously, I have no idea how this tour gets such high ratings. I am in the travel industry, and in my opinion there are far better things to do with $75. Out of curiosity, I asked some of the other passengers how they would rate the tour, and they gave it a 5 on a 10 point scale. I’m sure other people have had better experiences on this tour, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

We regret seeing monkeys in their habitat is not enough entertainment for this client and his girlfriend.
Irony of life, the monkey in the client's photograph is a Geoffroy's tamarin, which only lives in a few areas of northern Colombia and Panama, they do not exist in any other country on this planet. For most of the clients, just observing this unique species of monkey is worth more than US$75.

Not all wild-life tours produce the goods, but this one certainly provided plenty of monkeys, as well as agouti and many bird varieties, including a Toucan.
The Gatun Lake is dotted with many islands, each its own wildlife reserve, and each favouring one type of monkey. Travelling by boat allows visitors to get very close to two of the three main species, Tamarins and Titi (so close that the Titi monkeys walk over you) and visit several different islands. For most of the trip, it’s as though you are in a natural wilderness, but there is the surreal experience of passing huge tankers and container ships when returning to Gatun to remind you that the lake is part of a major maritime route.
The two lady guides (I’m sorry I’ve forgotten you names) arrived very promptly for the hotel pick ups and were both enthusiastic and informative, adding greatly to the experience. The journey to and from Panama City was comfortable and not too long, and also quite interesting, particularly where it ran close to the canal.
A really worthwhile trip: I chose the morning departure, which was probably cooler than the afternoon one, and found anti-mosquito spray was useful when on the lake.

This trip was absolutely perfect from start to end. Mario is so easy to work with and very knowledgeable about the area. He was giving us facts about Panama, explaining interesting things about the rainforest and the wildlife. Overall, made us feel very comfortable during the entire trip. We were able to interact with a lot of monkeys and even saw several sloths. Many of the other passing boats had 30+ people squeezed onto the boat and we only had 11 total, including Mario and the captain. It felt like a very personalized trip and we could not recommend this experience enough.

Great experience. I am a Panamanian living in the US and took my teenage kids and father on this trip. We joined my older brother and his family on this half day trip. It was their second time doing it. We all enjoyed it. Bus ride and boat ride were smooth. Do recommend to call them the day before so you get a pick up time… some guests were clueless and that affected everybody being picked up. Guide was knowledgeable and speaks English well. Recommend taking a little bag of nuts, a banana and maybe papaya pieces to offer the monkeys. If you have your own bag of snacks make sure it is closed when you visit with the larger monkeys else the monkeys may even grab from your snack bag and run away (which diminishes the time you can share with them). Binoculars would allow you to enjoy the experience even more so you can see up close the howling monkeys and iguanas that stay on top of the trees. Don’t drink too much liquids while on the trip as are no decent bathrooms at the dock. If you are a girl you will have to hold it from time you get picked up until you return to your pick up location. Also FYI, there is also no good place to wash your hands other than the canal water, so if you and your party are squirmish about that water then bring hand sanitizer or wipes. Best to have closed tow shoes for getting in and out of the boat.

We had a great afternoon with Mario and his crew (and the monkeys!). We were picked up from our Airbnb on time and were given a briefing of what to expect and how to feed the monkeys when we arrived, which was nice. We arrived at the boat ramp where we took a fun boat ride on Gatun Lake to Monkey Island. Side note: it doesn’t look like there is much of an opportunity for bathroom breaks, so I would recommend using the restroom before you leave for the tour.
We spent the next hour/hour and a half looking for and feeding the monkeys - it was SO much fun! We saw Geoffrey’s Tamarin, Capuchin, and Howler Monkeys, which are the three species native to the island. We got to feed the Geoffrey’s Tamarin and Capuchin monkeys. At the advice of the reviews, we brought grapes and bananas for the monkeys. The crew brought some mangoes and nuts, which they also loved! The foods the monkeys liked the most were unsalted peanuts and bananas, so I would recommend bringing those (the Capuchins seemed to go crazy over the peanuts and the Geoffrey’s Tamarins couldn’t get enough of our bananas!). We also saw alligators, green basilisk lizards, and an iguana. After the tour was over, we were brought safely back to our Airbnb. Mario and his crew were fantastic the whole way and we would definitely book this tour again!!

First class tour from start to finish. Transportation excellent, Mario is a fantastic guide and so personable. We saw 3 types of monkeys and a small crocodile. The monkeys were so funny they came on the boat to get treats. An experience I’ll never forget.

Mario picked us up at our hotel and took us and 2 other couples on a drive to the marina and then the boat ride thru Gatun Lake to a series of Islands which host various types of monkeys. Surprisingly, the monkeys jumped into the boat and would gently take bananas or peanuts from our hands. So fun! It was also interesting to see the ships waiting in the lake for passage through the canal. At the end, Mario returned each couple to our respective hotels.

I completely agree with Michael’s review. The tour was just okay. Drivers were prompt when picking us up in the morning, but a bit reckless (e.g. using their phones, speeding, etc.). As far as the tour itself, I was disappointed with the lack of appreciation for nature. Not only did our boat ram into the side of the islands upon arrival, but we were given peanuts and encouraged to feed the wild animals.
We spent about 30 minutes at the first island whilst our tour guides made incessant screeches to try and attract the monkeys. Because the “banana man” had already visited and fed the monkeys, however, they were full and reluctant to come out. We travelled to two other islands afterwards to see different species but, as other reviewers have mentioned, it was a constant competition to see the monkeys between all the simultaneous tours going on. Additionally, the company also lacked care for their customers. Two women from our tour were forgotten by the bus. When we informed the tour guide, she began to yell at the other host over the phone. I also forgot a bag in one of the vans (as there were several). When we contacted the company to try to organize a time to retrieve the items, however, the communication was choppy and unclear. Overall, if you are looking to be treated well and actually see monkeys up close, this tour is not for you.

Mario was a fantastic tour guide. We called him up a few days before and he was very quick to respond with calls. When we went, Miraflores was closed and so we asked if he could tack on a trip to Agua Clara. He gave a very fair price (as it almost doubled the time of the trip).
During the car ride, Mario was engaging and had great stories and information. Seeing the monkeys from the boat (we did afternoon) was a typical tourist trap thing but actually very fun! Highly recommend.

If you click on “Departure and Return”, it shows afternoon tour pickup between 1:20 and 2PM. If you click on a date on the calendar, it will show you if both times are available that day. Keep in mind, could be very hot and humid in the afternoon. We took the morning departure and enjoyed it.
Hi, for the monkey island boat tour is it better to go in the morning to see more monkeys, or do we still have same chance of seeing them for the 1:30 or 2 pm tours?

I don't really know if they're hungrier in the mornings or afternoons. My trip was in the afternoon and we still saw plenty of monkeys.
Good afternoon. I don’t need pick up. Where can I meet the boat and is there a discount with no pick up? Thank you.

Hi, I paid for the tour via Viator, and to be honest, I have no clue what part of Panama the boat ferry is, but it's close to the Canal. Maybe ask a local or a hotel concierge if they can direct you to the boat company itself.
