A highly recommended locally-owned trekking company!
Had an amazing time on the 5 day Inca trail trek with our guide Max! Would highly recommend the 5 days as you get to camp at Phuyupatamarca (our favourite and definitely most scenic campsite) and you also have time to visit more of the smaller (though no less impressive) Incan sites along the way. Max made sure to provide us heaps of information about the history of the Incas, details about all the sites visited as well as info about the plants and animals we saw (a special interest for some members of our group). The food was delicious and plentiful, the gear we rented was good quality - we were looked after really well! Overall the trip exceeded our expectations. Would highly recommend Alpaca expeditions as a locally owned company!

    Unforgettable bucket list adventure!
I don’t even know where to begin! We are a small group of 6 friends some of whom had milestone birthdays this year (60!) and wanted to do something memorable to celebrate. From start to finish, the team at Alpaca Expeditions was there all the way to help with our planning and took such great care of us! We did the 5D/4N Inka Trail to Machu Picchu and while it was probably the most challenging thing I have ever done, the journey was extraordinary mostly due to our incredible team of porters, chef and Tino…the most caring and compassionate guide who took extra good care of us from the first step to the last. His passion for history, culture and nature added so much to our trek and when someone in the group struggled, he was there with compassion and sincerity to help. We could not have accomplished this bucket list journey without him! A special shout out to Gregorio, our incredible chef who surprised us every day with delicious spreads morning, noon and night! I mean who gets Bananas flambé for dessert while camping?! One of our group has a gluten allergy and Gregorio made sure he never went hungry with equally impressive and delicious options. Bravo! And the porters! Amazing, caring and hard working team of incredible individuals made sure we were set up and taken care of each step of the way. Wait until you see them jogging past you with heavy packs to make sure camp is set before you arrive. Incredible! Don’t look any further if you are considering a tour company for Machu Picchu. Alpaca is simply the best! Thank you Tino, Gregorio and the entire team for making our journey unforgettable!

An experience beyond words… a real journey
Salkantay trek delivers so much more than just an incredible hike. Alpaca team make you appreciate so much of their culture, language, pride in their community, the environment and their company. The group become your family seeing you through the challenges and joys of the journey. The meals are incredible and the chef Sebastian and his team work wonders. Our guide Rolando offered so much insight to every aspect of the journey making every element well paced, calm, clear and interesting. Machu Pichu was a uniquely special experience led by Rolando but throughout the trip he made every stage something special. Coffee tasting was unexpected but great. The campsites are incredible for location and how the team make it all so effortless. The range of accommodation is well planned so you really enjoy all the different types. Hard not to write an essay on how exceptional this whole experience has been to the degree I was totally moved and touched by so many elements that now it’s over, I feel quite emotional!

Great Salkantay trek with Alpaca and Rolando
Excellent Salkantay trek with alpaca expeditions. Very well organised, great accommodation and above all an excellent guide in Rolando. The alpaca team got all our gear to each of the camps and provided great food and support. Every time we had a problem Rolando found a solution - wether it was a horse to get us up the steep part of the Salkantay pass or a car to get me to adopt where I could rest and recovery when I was ill. You have nothing to worry about with Rolando he will look after you ( and he us great company as well).

    Great experience!
I had a great time on the Lares Trek with our guide Jhymy. Our chefs, Soledad and Trinida, prepared delicious meals and accommodated all of our dietary needs (allergies, restrictions). Our porters and staff, Segundino, Roberto, and Fernando, made sure our camps were setup and ready with our bags before we arrived to each campsite. Thank you to all the staff for an incredible experience

    Amazing experience
The Salkantay track was an amazing experience. The landscape (mountains/cloudforrest/jungle) was really impressive and includes a pass of approx 4600m high. Subsequently, our guide (Rolando) and chef (Sebastian) made this trip even better by providing information about the nature/Inca’s and very delicious food. I can recommend anyone who wants to visit Machu Picchu to plan this hike with Alpaca.

    Highly recommend Alpaca!
A fantastic experience — the information about the trek was provided ahead of time in order to prepare, then things were handled smoothly from day one. The guide, Ronaldo, was a true gem — and I have done a lot of tours. He helped everyone in our group bond together as a fast family, and he gave us loads of amazing information each step along the way. The chef, Sebastian, made sure we had warm meals three times a day, constantly surprising us with innovative local cuisine. It was hard to believe we were in the Andes when eating his food. The trek was beautiful, filled with highlights each day. We were able to see many beautiful sights, including Humantay Lake and Machu Picchu, with only our groups — very different than other tours and treks where you are just one of a crowd. Would highly recommend Alpaca for this or any other trek! (The company itself is also active in giving back to their local community and supporting their employees — extra brownie points)

5 star once in a life time experience
Our tour was the 4 day 3 night Inka trail to Machu Picchu. We had an amazing time. We had a group of 13 people and we met the day before for a helpful briefing explaining what we would be doing day to day. There we met also our guides Elisban and Rosita. We left with our bag to put our clothes in and with a lot of excitement thanks to meeting everyone and feeling ready. The trek itself was outstanding. Elisban and Rosita were very knowledgable guides and great professional people with great humor. They made sure everyone was comfortable and they prepared us really well for all parts of the route. It felt like you were doing the trek as a team with great coaches. The route itself can be challenging, especially day two with a lot of elevation gain, but they made it manageable and fun. The views are amazing (and they were also great photographers). Elisban and Rosita clearly had a lot of knowledge and passion about their culture, language, the area and the people. I think it added a lot of value to our trip that they shared their stories (short history lessons and personal experiences) as locals - thank you both for sharing it with us! The food deserves its own paragraph - it was a spread of many different dishes every morning, afternoon and evening with choice for everyone. I was the only vegetarian and there was plenty of choice for me plus an additional dish that was always great. I travelled with two friends with allergies and they also received great separate dishes and snacks. Lastly, you can not do this trek without an amazing team of porters. Those guys carry all the materials and food up and set up camp. Everything you need will be there (even a toilet), the tents and sleeping mats and bags were great. They were a hard working and fun group of people. Alpaca values the work of the porters and makes an effort so that you are all introduced to each other. This makes the experience more real and puts it in perspective, which was important to me. In short, I had an amazing experience I will never forget. I feel so lucky we had Rosita, Elisban, the team of porters and the group all with a great attitude, humor and philosophy - combined with never ending beautiful views and finishing in the famous Machu Picchu. I would recommend Alpaca to everyone!!

We had a phenomenal Inca trail trip, which included a day at Sacred Valley. Highly recommend the guides Alvin, Yoel, and Rosel. Most of the guides have hiked the trail hundreds of times. Alvin was wonderfully cheery and upbeat - he’s really fun to hike with. Yoel is a great leader and we enjoyed talking about his Incan ancestry. And Rosel is an expert - he has hiked Inca more than 700 times and was very knowledgeable in explaining the history behind the Incan sites. These three guides and all of the staff (chefs and porters) were extraordinarily kind to us. The porters, in particular, are INCREDIBLE and deserve all the praise.

On feedback for the tour company: I hope Alpaca takes kind care of its employees, in particular the porters. I’d say the Alpaca company could operationally make things easier and/or more efficient for its team - e.g., having tent numbers assigned in advance with name cards for duffel bags (rather than scrambling the morning of with writing these down). And would recommend creating more of a relationship between tourist and porter (e.g., assigning a porter to you, so you can get to know them /personally give thanks and provide tip).

Tips: Bring cash tips (in soles) for all the team members!

Alpaca Expeditions goes above and beyond to make this a once in a lifetime experience for all of the trekkers! I really did not know what to expect, but Alpaca was on top of everything and knew exactly what to do to ensure that the trip was a success. Initially, planning was easy and communication via email was always informative and responses were provided in a timely manner. The website has everything you need (follow the packing list, they know what they are talking about) and the night before your trek they meet with you to debrief and make sure you are prepared and all of your questions are answered.

As for the trek itself, the experience is priceless. Alpaca uses local Peruvian porters who are eager and excited to help make you’re trip a success. With 13 trekkers we were given, I believe, 22 porters. Each porter carries equally weighted bags filled with your tents, food, duffles, etc. They rush through the trail to get to the lunch sites and camp sites before you, have everything set up when you arrive, cheer you on as you go, clean up when you leave, and then pass you on the trail to do it all over again for the next lunch/campsite. I do not speak fluent Spanish, but the porters all did their best to communicate positivity and encouragement. You can tell that Alpaca treats them well and that they are happy to work for the green machine.

If you think you are going to lose weight during the trek YOU ARE WRONG! The food we ate during the hike was some of the best food that I have ever had in my life!!! Our chef Yuri could honestly run his own 5 star restaurant with the food he was serving us! Every meal had soup to start and nearly five different dishes/sides to choose from. The real challenge is to keep yourself from overeating so that you can continue the hike!!! You absolutely have to try a little of everything, but remember that the trek is not a walk in the park so nourish yourself but don’t eat yourself into a food coma!

Finally, and most importantly, the guides are the ones who really make the experience unique. Henry was our assistant guide and he worked to keep everyone motivated and laughing. He was ready to answer any questions and help with anything that we needed. Our main guide, Alvin, was so incredibly knowledgeable of the Peruvian Quechua culture and the history. Walking along and seeing the sights is one thing, but being with someone who can make the sights and the stories come to life is a completely other thing. He shared his culture, traditions, experiences, and knowledge every step of the way. He fully prepared us for what was to come and it really felt like he tailored the experience to the people of the group. He challenged us all to have a positive mental attitude (PMA!) and was the reason our group was as enjoyable as it was. It takes a strong leader to unite 13 strangers in a family.

I know this was a long review, but I really feel like I absolutely have to give a shout out to every single person who made this trip such an amazing experience for me: the Alpaca administration, the green machine porters, the amazing chef Yuri, and the spectacular guides Alvin and Henry! I will forever recommend Alpaca to anyone visiting Peru and look forward to doing additional treks with them!

We had the #1 Team!
Russell, Walter, and Max made our journey to Machu Pichu unforgettable; their energy and optimism were contagious. The food prepared by the chef(Moses) was delicious, and the porter(sherpa) service was second to none. Due to a strike in Cusco, Alpaca had to adjust our departure time to the evening before our scheduled date. Russell handled the logistics of getting staffing, equipment, and transportation quickly; it was challenging. Still, the entire team worked hard to ensure we were safe and comfortable and would experience a fantastic adventure.

The views are worth every step!
The trail is strenuous at times; I recommend hiking poles, comfortable-lightweight trail shoes (altras), and dressing in layers. (I also recommend packing an anti-diarrhea medicine and spending three days In Cusco to acclimate to the altitude. You will be exposed to different foods and conditions that may affect you in Cusco and on the trail). Our "Super Hiker" family of 15 was of various athletic abilities and ages from the mid-20s to 68. We bonded very well and had an incredible time together, on and off the trial. Still, you could also break away easily and hike in silence if you wanted to solo hike from time to time (I will miss our time together). Walter and Russell kept a moderate pace and ensured no one would be left behind. We were very safe in their capable hands. A bonus is you get to stop from time to time to hear stories of the Inka people and learn about their history.

The journey is the destination.
This trip was one I will recommend repeatedly, and I will cherish the memories for a lifetime.

I had such an amazing experience trekking through the Andes to Machu Picchu with Alpaca Expeditions! My tour guide Frank was very knowledgeable of the land and history of the Inca civilization. The head chef went above and beyond to prepare foods to our dietary needs & were extremely tasty every day! The scenery of hiking through different landscapes and watching the sunrise from the tent on the mountain top will be an experience I will never forget. This company treated the hikers like royalty and I would 100% recommend booking a trip with them.

My state of physical ability being what it is 2 years after the start of the pandemic, I was a little worried about doing this hike, but the folks at Alpaca did a great job helping me know exactly what to expect coming into it. Every step along the way they were great at communicating and letting me know exactly what I would need and exactly what I was getting myself into.

Throughout the actual trek, our guide Miguel was very knowledgable and did a good job managing the faster and slower group members, answering any questions we had, telling us about the plans and what to expect for each day. The chaskis (sp?) very impressively had our tents set up for us when we got to the campsite every day, and our fantastic chef Gregorio cooked incredible meals for us every morning, afternoon, and evening, even working around dietary restrictions that some group members had.

In the end, we got to see some incredible sights, learn some really interesting facts, and feel very impressed with how much we accomplished. It was very difficult, especially that notorious climb on the second day, but there is definitely sufficient time that anyone can struggle up it. And do make sure that (if you go in March) you're prepared adequately with waterproofing, as it was quite rainy. However, this was a fantastic trip, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in archaeology, hiking, and/or adventure.

My 17 yo daughter and I booked the 4 day Classic Inca Trail hike through Alpaca Expeditions. It is difficult to put into words what an incredible experience it was from start to finish. Communication was top notch from the time we booked the trip through to the end. We were supposed to leave for our hike early Monday morning, but due to rumors of a strike that was expected to disrupt road transportation, we left late the night before and camped at the trail head so we could start our hike on time. That is just one small example of their commitment to ensuring we had the best experience. Our guides were Rosel (lead) and Juan Carlos and they were absolutely amazing. Rosel has done the hike ~700 times. He is an expert hiker and historian, and his passion for Peru, for nature and his heritage is infectious. He made sure no one was left behind, and that those who fell behind did not feel bad about being “slow.” I got sick on the last night, just prior to entering Machu Picchu. I asked him what would happen if I wasn’t able to hike. His immediate response was, “You will make it. I will stay with you.” He did stay with me, carrying my day pack for me, and constantly checking in to see how I was doing.

One thing that sets Alpaca Expeditions apart from the other local tour companies is the way they treat their porters. The porters work HARD, carrying ~40 lbs of gear apiece, and moving fast enough to stay ahead of the hikers to have the next night’s camp setup upon arrival. They are all provided with proper clothing and shoes, and Rosel made sure each porter had an opportunity to introduce himself so we could thank them for serving us. Our chef was incredible and we ate like royalty. How he was able to prepare what he did on a 2-burner hot plate in a makeshift kitchen is beyond me. He even prepared and decorated an entire cake for our last night. Absolutely amazing.

I have done a fair amount of hiking, but nothing this difficult, and I had never camped. The packing list they provided in advance coupled with the guidance along the way made our trip just perfect. I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I highly recommend booking this trek through Alpaca Expeditions, and also recommend requesting Rosel and Juan Carlos. I can’t imagine a better, more supportive team!

Amazing 4 days of hiking through the Andes and tropical forest to Macchu Picchu. No better way to see and really feel this place. Incomparable. Our guides Jose and Jimmy were extremely thoughtful, making sure that everyone gets the best experience at all times. Jose was very knowledgeable about the culture and history and made the trip super interesting as we explored through numerous archeological sites over the four days. From his 16 years of experience, he knew which spots were the best spots at which time. Our team was always at the right place at the right time despite unpredictable weather in the mountains. Towards the end of the trip we found our that Jimmy his been carrying two oxygen tanks in his backpack in case of emergency at high altitudes. Porters and the chef were amazing as well. Always tirelessly working and making sure that we gain more weights than lose them despite hours of walking everyday. Every meal was way too delicious for something that you should be having at 10,000 ft altitude in the wild. Food that we enjoyed ranged from Lomo Saltado to Trout ceviche to chocolate crepe to cakes for desserts. Unbelievable. Alpaca Expedition also treats their staff very fairly. Superhuman porters who carry heavy bags for you through insane hills and mountain peaks are well equipped. We saw several porters who belong to other companies not even being equipped with proper shoes. They were wearing sandals. All in all, incredible experience over the four days. Bring both summer clothes and thicker clothes (fleece, down jacket etc) for nights. It will get cold once the Sun goes down and it will be sweltering during the day under the sun. Hats, sunscreen and insect repellents are a must. Also bring flashlight (headlamps preferred) and extra batteries or portable powerbanks since there is no access to electricity or phone service. And be physically fit and ready because it's not an easy hike. No matter how tough you find this hike as you power through it, ultimately you'll be more than glad that you did it.

I traveled with two of my other friends for the first time with Alpaca Expeditions earlier this month. We did the 4D/3N Inca Trail Hike & Rainbow Mountain. We also did Wayna Picchu which was extra but definitely worth it in our opinion! One of my friend’s coworkers recommended them and she could not have provided us with a better company to do this with. Our experience was incredible and honestly exceeded all of our expectations. It made our expectations so much higher for everything else we did in Peru following this that it made everything and everyone fall short compared to them! We had the BEST tour guides, Elisban and Miguel. They went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience. They are both very knowledgeable and taught us so much about Inca history and culture. They would allow us to stop to take pictures and served as our own photographers at times. I assure you they know how to get the best pictures too! They always checked in on all of us (we had a total of 12 in the group) to ensure our wellbeing (hello altitude sickness) and offered help if needed. Trust me, they are prepared for everything! For me and most in my group, day 2 was the most challenging but you feel so motivated by the tour guides and other trekkers that it makes it doable.

Chef Sebastian cooked lovely meals for us throughout the trip and the porters (referred to as chasquis) each carried 7kg/14lbs of our belongings in a duffel bag to our campsites and sent up tents for us before we arrived at each campsite. We were given the opportunity to learn more about them, their families and their hometowns which I felt was very meaningful. They provide you with clean water daily.

My friends and I were the only ones to do Rainbow Mountain so it was our own private tour essentially with our driver who picked us up at our hotel, chef Walberto, and Elisban. We had breakfast and lunch provided and let me tell you, the food was beyond delicious!

I know not everyone takes this into consideration when picking a company but I think it is important to highlight that Alpaca Expeditions partakes in various social projects to give back to their communities which I think is so admirable. For example, they help provide electricity to local communities and provide their chasquis with uniforms and appropriate footwear to trek in. You will see on the trail this is not true for other chasquis working for other companies. Some would have converse or sandals on which is no good given the type of terrain we were on. I 100% recommend Alpaca Expeditions if you get a chance to go. I promise you will not be disappointed!

We just returned from our 4D/3N Classic Inca trail hike. I do not know where to even begin to describe our experience. Personally, this trip was a bucket list item that I had dreamed of for over 30 years. Every minute of the trip was almost surreal to me, and yes, even while climbing Dead Women’s Pass!

We had a private group tour of myself and 6 others. When you book a tour that requires you to spend 4 days and 3 nights with a guide, you obviously wonder who that person will be. For us, it was Fletcher. I cannot say enough great things about Fletcher! He was informative, patient, kind, funny and we genuinely enjoyed every minute of our time with him! He was always full of positivity and support no matter the issue. He made sure to make everyone of us feel secure and confident about our day and always made sure to check on each one of us and how we were feeling. He was just INCREDIBLE. You almost feel like family by the end of your trip!

As for the rest of the “Green Machine”, AMAZING! These porters are the true heroes behind the scenes. What they do every day is above and beyond. I was in absolute amazement when each one would pass us on the trail (sometimes running) to be sure they arrived ahead of us to make our day as perfect as possible every step of the way.

The chefs! You will honestly not believe how you are fed and what is prepared for you every morning, noon and night. The food was absolutely delicious! The presentation is better than I’ve seen in 5 star restaurants and tastes just as incredible!

I am SO glad I chose Alpaca Expeditions and even happier that we were given such an AWESOME guide! Thank you so SO much for making my dream come true (literally)! It exceeded every expectation I had and then some!

I had the most amazing experience trekking with José and his crew. The staff was amazing and went above and beyond to make the experience memorable. José was highly encouraging and shared so much knowledge about the trail and the history of the local people with us. He made sure our group not only succeeded on the hike, but came away with historical knowledge as well as lessons he has learned during his time guiding showing how passionate he is in his work. I am so grateful to have had him as a guide, I learned so much during my experience and would recommend this experience to anyone interested.
