MUST DO - and ask for Kevin!!
Incredible experience!!!
Our family of 2 out-of-shape parents and 2 teenage kids went to Peru for Spring Break. We booked a 2-day tour of the Sacred Valley, Pisac, Ollyantaytambo, Machu Picchu, and Huayna Picchu.
Kevin met us the night before at our hotel, exactly on time. He carefully walked us through all the events of the trip - their timing, the tickets (he’d already purchased all of it), the items we’d need (passports & a backpack with a change of clothes, some snacks, camera, drinks). We met the following morning & had a HUGE minivan and driver just for our family!! We took a wonderful drive to Pisac, stopping at a llama, alpaca, and vicuña preserve, some beautiful photo stops, and then Pisac. The whole time we got a comprehensive overview of the region & it’s history. We climbed Pisac and took a bunch of photos. Kevin was super engaging with our teenagers, which was so nice!
We further had lunch in Pisac and walked through their incredible market (hint!! Get your souvenirs here!). We continued on to Ollyantaytambo and our kids climbed those ruins with Kevin while we chilled down below. He was so darn flexible about what we did and where we went, it was amazing!
We took the train to Machu Picchu - note, you can upgrade to the VistaDome train. Your guide would take a separate train if you do this, which scared us, but he informed us we’d be met on the other end by a representative, and sure enough a young lady had a sign with our names at the other end. It’s a tiny train station, you cannot get lost! The entry/exit points are about 10 feet wide and the waiting rooms for the trains only hold about 15-30 people! The city is in the jungle, the train takes about 90 minutes to get there & runs along a river all the way there. You’ll get a little snack & drink on the train & a small cultural presentation that was a lot of fun (not going to ruin it but it’ll make you laugh!)
The hotel in Machu Picchu initially worried us as the city is clearly not well off and I’m used to the Ritz, but it was clean, very quiet, and very safe! There are no cars in Machu Picchu Pueblo, there’s a river that runs through town just outside the train station and maybe 3 streets about 1/4 mile long each. Most hotels are on the same street, right on the river, and another parallel street behind the hotels is where all the restaurants are. It is on a long slope, think of a San Francisco street but in the middle of the jungle. We wandered around for the evening, had our dinner, and felt quite safe.
The next morning Kevin met us at 7am and we lined up for the buses up the mountain. We were in Machu Picchu by about 8:30am. We walked around the site with Kevin for some time before we headed to the check in for Huayna Picchu. Sole important thoughts here - firstly, I had in my mind we’d climb Huayna Picchu first but Kevin had booked our tickets to do Machu Picchu first. LISTEN TO HIM AND DO MACHU PICCHU FIRST!!! Yes there was fog at Machu Picchu initially, but we were patient and just as Kevin predicted, all the fog lifted while we were there and we got amazing pictures. We took a fog one just for fun and one about 7 minutes later that you’ll see below - that’s how quickly the weather changes!
Climbing Huayna Picchu in the second group is smart because you are passing people as they’re coming down the mountain and once they clear you have the whole mountain to yourselves. It was incredible!! It isn’t for the faint hearted - my husband had to quit about 30% of the way up the mountain, and I had to take breaks all the time, but Kevin was so amazingly encouraging and patient we couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Tip: take 2L of water per person. We ran out of water coming down and were parched at the end!
A few thoughts about the climb - when you begin the trek you actually have to climb DOWN first. You must get from Machu Picchu to the next mountain over, so you go down into the valley to cross over to the other mountain. Just remember when you’re aching and tired at the end of your trek, you have to climb back up out of the valley to leave....it’s a bit of torture :)
When you near the summit you’ll arrive at some terraces. Stop here & just enjoy for 10 minutes, because next you climb the “stairs of death” - steep, small depth stairs to get to the elevation check point. These stairs are no joke in how scary they are if you actually stop & turn and look while you’re on the stairs...essentially you can drop right into the valley from them in you slip. My 13 year-old daughter had a bit of a panic attack here, but Kevin stayed right with her and soothes her and encouraged her up those steps!! So, after this you’ll hit the elevation check point where you can sit & chill a while. Take some photos, etc.
Climb up further to the very summit where there’s only room for 3-4 people to take a photo on a rock with Machu Picchu behind you, and then you start your descent.
Here’s where our hero guide again cane to the rescue - there’s a cave you have to maneuver coming down the mountain. It is VERY tight & for a claustrophobic person, I found it terrifying. Kevin coached me through it, and even scrambled down into the cave with me to stop me from hitting my head as I panicked & tried to stand up!
After you’re out of the cave, you’re pretty much following the same path down as you took up, so not much more to say here other than Kevin is so conscientious about your safety that he warned us and even jumped ahead of the kids in steep sections to point to the rocks they needed to walk on for the most stable descent.
Now folks, this is a huge mountain for our family, we’ve never experienced ANYTHING like this before. We felt in such capable hands. It took us 3 hours and 7 minutes from start to finish. Kevin has made a round trip of the entire mountain in under 40 minutes, so we could only imagine how he must have felt with slow people in tow, but he was positive the entire time!!
On the return from the region, Kevin’s train was about an hour ahead of ours because we again chose the VistaDome train, so we did a little shopping & picked up our backpacks we’d stored at the hotel while we climbed. He met us back in Ollantaytambo and back we went to Cusco!
This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us. We were nervous storing bags in Cusco (when we left for Machu Picchu), and Machu Picchu while we climbed, but Kevin and our driver made it all so darn easy, safe, and enjoyable!
Kevin even made sure to get Machu Picchu stamps in our passports, which we’d have never thought to do. He made sure we kept change for the bathrooms, and that we had emergency electrolytes in case of dehydration. He really thinks of everything!
Couldn’t be happier with our experience, our children have memories that they’ll cherish their whole lives because of Kevin!

Great guide & views
Great day trip from Cusco.
It’s a really early morning, but you need 2 hours for the car, plus 2 hours for the train. Arriving to Machu Picchu early before the huge crowds made the 3:30am wakeup worth it. Our guide, Kevin, was patient, informative, and a great photographer.
Adding the hike up Huayna was a highlight. It’s challenging and steep, but the views are incredible.
We opted to skip the bus and walk back down to Aguas Calientes.

Awesome day
Oct 2019 • Friends
The full day experience was absolutely great! Simon, our driver, picked us up at our hotel right on time during the night for a 1h drive to the train station. Excellent driver, patient and experienced.

For the Machu Picchu part, our guide Michael was totally on point. We didn’t miss any information about the historical sites, speaks english really well and was ready to adapt to the group (my dad is 68, he helped him and waited for him any time he wanted, I really appreciated that). We also ascend the Huayna Picchu. He helped a lot with shorts cuts and told me stories about the region all the way to the top. He even took pictures for me of his favorite spots.

We came back with both Michael and Simon to our hotel at night because they wanted to make sure that we arrive safely.

All around, I would recommand this trip to anyone who seeks a complete cultural backround with great insights. CrossoverPeru rocks!!

10/10 for sure! Thank you so much guys!

Fantastic!!!! So worth it!
Jul 2019 • Friends
Kevin was our guide and he was amazing! He came to our hostel in Cusco the night before and prepped us on the following day. Our driver arrived at our hostel around 4 am and took us to the train. He was a great driver! We got on our train and then met Kevin to take the bus up. Kevin was waiting for us outside the train station and then we hopped on the bus. We got our Machu Picchu stamps and headed in. Kevin gave us information and history about the area while we toured around for a bit. We then went to Hyuana Mtn. for our hike. Now, neither my friend nor I are in the best shape so it was INTENSE! Very steep stairs. Kevin was very patient with us as we took breaks during the hike to catch our breath. Getting to the top was 100% worth it though. It felt so good having to push my body and then being rewarded with incredible views. Kevin took so many photos and was a great photographer. On the way down I was on an adrenaline kick and left my friend who was struggling behind and Kevin stayed with her all the way until she got to the bottom. We all went out to lunch after and then we took the train back and our driver was there with a sign waiting for us.

Some tips:
- make sure you have enough time to adjust to the altitude beforehand.
- hike, hike, hike! Train your body - use the stair stepper
- hydrate and bring lots of water (electrolytes help too)
- nice hiking boots or something with grip

My family and I (wife and 2 teenage girls) did the full day tour from Cusco of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. It was truly a magical day with some of the most unbelievable landscape I have ever seen. CrossOver Tours was one of the best companies I have ever booked with; they were professional, prompt, and everything was taken care of 100 times over. We did not have to worry about any of the logistics, fee's etc.all we had to do was enjoy an amazing day. Edwin, our guide, was a superstar! He met us the night before and outlined every little detail for us. The next day he provided a full day of views, landscape, information and everything we needed to hold on to our memories forever! He was extremely knowledgeable and really catered the day to our wishes. And he kept us motivated and laughing as we trekked up the trail to Huayna Picchu. Overall an amazing day and one I would highly recommend!

Amazing Day!
May 2019 • Couples
We had the most amazing day seeing Machu Picchu & climbing Huayna Picchu. A lot to squeeze into the day but we didn’t feel too rushed at any point
Michael was great, detailed 10 minute catch up the night before in our hotel. Taxi collection on time at 4am into the Sacred Valley to catch the train, through some lovely views to Machu Picchu where Michael met us immediately through the gates of the station
Then after the short bus journey our tour begun, Michael shared lots of information, very passionately & answered any questions we had, Also gave us plenty of time to grab some photo’s in the best photo opportunity places as we walked around
Huayna Picchu was quiet a climb, but Michael kept us motivated at all times and reaching the top made the hot climb well worth it – would definitely recommend this particular day tour
We were back down for a nice lunch in a restaurant Michael recommended – Great food & atmosphere, we then had an hour or so to wonder the markets and enjoy the scenery before embarking the train, then taxi to arrive back into Cusco for around 8pm
Highly recommend Crossover Peru, this day tour & hope your lucky enough to get Michael as your wonderful guide :o)

A Lifetime Memory - A Perfect Day!
May 2019 • Family
Our guide Kevin came to where we were staying the night before to explain everything for the next day and give us our tickets (train, bus, entry tickets) so we were well prepared. Our driver arrived the next day at 3:45 am and our adventure began! After arriving at the train station, we departed for our 1 1/2 hr train ride, then Kevin met us at the disembarkation point and we all boarded the bus together. 30 minutes later we arrived at the entry gate to Machu Picchu and it was breathtaking! We spent the next couple of hours exploring the site and hearing so much wonderful information from Kevin - it made it mean so much more to hear and understand from all his knowledge of the people, the history - it was impressive. We then spent the next couple of hours hiking to Huayana Picchu. Kevin was so encouraging! The sites were spectacular and we never felt rushed. We took our time and enjoyed every minute. We finally arrived back at our hotel around 9:30pm so it was an exhausting day but a memorable one. I highly recommend this tour and our guide. We will never forget our wonderful day spent exploring this incredible place! Thank You CrossoverPeru Tours and Kevin!

The most memorable day of our trip
Two of us have been in Peru for a week. We’ve done many group tours and saved this private tour for our last big adventure.

We were met the night before for a thorough review. Our private driver met us EXACTLY on time (nice change from crowded group sprinter van). The train was fantastic with windows wall-ceiling.

Our guide , Edwin, patiently helped us gather some necessities and guided us easily up to Macchu Picchu on another bus.

Macchu Picchu did not disappoint on a perfectly sunny day. Edwin was full of accurate knowledge and answered all of our questions. Way to go Edwin!

I had to leave my travel partner behind because of stomach issues to ascend Huayna Picchu (HP). By the way, Edwin was so patient and accommodating during that awkward time and helped my other half get comfortable before we made the climb to HP.

The added HP tour was a challenge. A test of your heart and lungs but not the torture of the other high altitude tours in Peru (Lake Humantay and Montana de 7 Colores). The height was less of a concern than I thought and I simply used my feet AND hands for some of the ascent.

In the end ...WORTH IT

We had a few hours in AguaCalientes for an excellent lunch at MACHAPA. Our table was open to the river. Lots of walking and shopping and people watching before we boarded our train

Our return train was delayed and I was able to connect through WhatsApp to insure our driver would still take us back to Cusco. The station was a bit disorganized and apocalyptic at the end of a busy tour day. Train stopped many times and we arrived an hour late. No fault of CrossOver Peru.
Our driver patiently waited and humbly drove us back to Cusco on some pretty treacherous roads. I have driven in other countries, but I won’t drive in Peru. It takes patience, confidence, and local knowledge to deal with aggressive drivers and unpredictable roads. Hats off to our driver

Thanks to Edwin for his great patience, empathy, and knowledge. Not to mention his sure-footedness on HP. Thanks to the driver for his skills!
