  • Brief History of Machu Picchu & Advice: Machu Picchu was (relatively recently) "discovered" by American historian, Hiram Bingham, in 1911 while searching for the legendary "lost city of the Incas". Whether arriving via Inca Trail or entering from Aguas Calientes don't miss the excellent photo opportunities from the following spots: Hut of the Caretaker of the Funerary Rock (a restored building with a thatched roof), Sacred Plaza with views of the Cordillera Vilcabamba in the distance and Rio Urubamba below. Take a short walk out to the Inca Drawbridge (30 minutes) and Inti Punku (45 - 60 minutes) for great views of the site as dawn breaks and the clouds lift over Machu Picchu.
  • SUGGESTED PACKING LIST: Bring or Rent in Cuzco: hiking poles, rain pants, rain poncho, trekking boots, sandals, warm socks, sweater, thermals, hat, gloves, sun hat, sun block, sun glasses, flashlight/torch, camera, extra batteries and memory card (there is limited to no electricity available during the trek), waterproof bags for your camera, hand sanitizer, personal first aid kit, water bottle. Amazing Salkantay trek!
Nov 2019 • Couples
Great experience to do the 5 day trekking! Salkantay trek has amazing views and continuously changing surroundings! The guide Anderson knows so much about the wildlife, history and culture that it was a big addition to our experience. So big shout out to him for the awesome time he gave us! Also Carlos was amazing with his delicious cooking skills, which resulted in a 3 meal course for lunch and dinner with local products!

Overall very good trip, which is more that worth your time and everything well arranged!

Fantastic Trek with our guide Anderson!
Sep 2019 • Couples
We had a fantastic trip in a small group consisting of 3 participants, our guide Anderson and our chef Jorge. It was a tiring but equally impressive trip. The whole tour was very well planned and everything worked smoothly. Our guide Anderson told us a lot about the flora and fauna along the way, the history of the inca and the life in peru today. He always paid attention to all team members. The food in the trip was always delicious. We saw so many beautiful landscapes on this Trek. And at the last day we were one of the first in the morning (6 p.m.) arriving at Machu Picchu, without many tourists and a beautiful sunrise - an unforgettable experience. Thanks to our tour-operator Bamba and especially to our Guide Anderson and our chef Jorge.

5-Day Salkantay Trek with Anderson - Bamba Experience
Sep 2019 • Couples
We did the 5-day trek to Machu Picchu. It was a wonderful and unforgetable experience in a small group of 3 persons + guide, cook and horseman. Our guide Anderson showed us so much of flora and fauna, explained us the life of the inca, peruanian history, culture and lifestyle until today and was always caring for our group-members. Also our cook jorge made us happy after long terms of walking with great tasting local and healthy food. We had a great time together, eventhough it was sometimes exhausting to walk that far in this altitude. Never will forget this trip, always would do it again. Thanks to Anderson and the other group-members.

Spirit of pachamama and the Andes 🇵🇪
It was our first time in Peru and we loved it. The people and landscape are very colorful and lovely. The 5day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu was one of the best experience we had. It was powerful, emotional, amazing and enjoyable. Bamba experience Cusco was very well organized, especially our Guide Junior made this Trek unforgettable. He told us many things about the country, nature, culture and the spirit of „pachamama“. Junior was very kind and not pushing us by walking in this high altitude. The food on the trek was great. We loved it and we highly recommend him and bamba experience cusco for everyone who will learn something about the Andes and the culture. We will take the spirit with us!
Thanks a lot to junior and bamba for this adventure!

Incredible trip! Could not fault.
Sep 2019
Our experience with Bamba and the 5 day Salkantay trek was nothing short of amazing. The entire experience from start to finish was worry free and so professional. I have to say a huge part of the reason it was so amazing was that our guide ANDERSON was the best. Anderson was so kind, caring, full of interesting knowledge and just an all around wonderful human being. My husband and I really enjoyed getting to know him and appreciated the patience and genuine demeanour that he demonstrated. Our chef Adriel was also incredible. Cooking 5 course meals off a small gas stove and waking us up at 5am with coca tea. Adriel was always smiling and I have to say his food was some of the best that we have ever had.

Thank you Anderson, Adriel, and the whole Bamba crew for making our experience one we will never EVER forget! Lots of love, the Chadwicks

Tremendous trek - Willy was a legend!
Highly recommended. The trip is nicely balanced between hiking, down time and other excursions. I loved the mountain scenery on days one and two and then the dramatic change into the jungle thereafter. The campsites were well maintained and sociable and the three star accommodation the night before Machu Pichu was much appreciated. I can't speak highly enough of our guide, Willy - aka Peru's answer to William Wallace. Willy set the right tone for the tour from the get go. He catered for the varying needs of the group very well and, importantly, always ensure we lived the moment. He's no doubt done hundreds of these tours, but still managed to make ours feel special. His knowledge was great without being overbearing and I appreciated his personal touches re the Inca culture. Running with the packhorses, copious amounts of Inca tequila, bathing in the (freezing) waterfall and climbing the passion fruit trees were just some of the highlights Willy introduced me to. For what it's worth, I was a tour guide in Scotland, and I learnt alot from Willy's methods. Last but not least, our chef Bennilito was hilarious and his meals were well hearty. He and Willy had a great dynamic. In summary, don't be put off that this trek is not the classic Inca trial. It's truly a great alternative. Perhaps it's even better?

Exceeded our expectations
We arrived with certain expectations of the sights and landscape we would see. All I can say that we were in constant awe for our entire trek. Our guide named Anderson was incredible and if you are thinking of using this company try to request him. He was knowledgeable, patient, safe and spoke English very well. I don't speak Spanish very well though it was evident he was well respected and allowed us to truly get the best experience we could obtain. Because of our cook and guide we recommend bamba to anyone.

Amazing trip - highly recommend!!
The 5 day Salkantay trek with Bamba was absolutely amazing! If you have the opportunity, please take it.

The location is simply stunning. I am so glad I chose this trek above all of the others for its variation in landscapes and also the physical challenge, which is very real but manageable. It is difficult to choose just one favourite moment or day, they were all special. I don’t want to give spoilers about the environment but every day is very different, and the achievement of completing the trek is very rewarding!

Our guide Anderson was very knowledgeable, friendly and great at his job! He answered all of our questions, helped us through the times when we were being challenged, and cheered for us when we made it. A few of us had various difficulties with altitude, old injuries flaring up, etc etc, and he was so very helpful through all of it. The pace he set was good and with consideration to the groups’s needs. Anderson also made the trip fun and interesting with lots of local stories along the way!

Our chef Agriel was also phenomenal. Wow. I was not expecting much for food brought on horseback but he is on another level. Everything he made was amazing, with lots of local produce inspired by traditional Peruvian dishes. The soups were especially worth mentioning! He catered so creatively and happily to our group of three, two of whom had dietary requirements. Agriel was also able to help us with natural remedies for headaches and tummy trouble due to the altitude.

Overall it was an amazing trip and I couldn’t wish for anything better. Thanks Bamba, Anderson and Agriel :)

Amazing experience with Bamba!
Jun 2019 • Friends
I did the Salkantay trek in the beginning July (2019), and it was for sure the highlight of my 5 weeks trip to Peru and Ecuador! Junior did an amazing job as a tour guide and is probably a lot of the reason why it was so extremely fun to do the trek! He has so much knowledge and communicates it very well, making sure that everyone was feeling included and a part of the group. Although it's a challenging trek, he never rushed us and made us feel comfortable with keeping our own pace. We kept morale high for the entire trip and we had so much fun these 5 days!! Even when it was cloudy when we reached Machu Picchu, he kept up the spirit in the group. Also the food was amazing every single day, the accommodation was exactly as I hoped (the tents were very nice and the hotel at the end as well). I highly recommend the Bamba experience Salkantay Trek, especially with Junior as your guide!!
