We booked this tour as part of a birthday surprise for my husband, and ended up learning about the rich and often dark past of Kowloon. All of us have lived in HK for a number of years, so it was a real treat to embark on a walking tour of discovery in our home city. Mel was a great host who was thoughtful, engaging and very patient with all of our needs and we enjoyed great conversation from a seasoned local the entire time. I don’t want to give away any further details for anybody considering the tour themselves, but definitely a highly recommended activity in this period of limited travel abroad for those residing in HK, and certainly a must-do for future visitors! Thanks Mel for guiding us with such hospitality.

Our guide was Mel, a very patient man who knew the area perfectly and spoke excellent English. We've been to HK before, but Mel opened our eyes to the wonders that can be lying just off the beaten path or around the corner from the familiar. Besides showing us the best markets for shopping like Fok Wing market and Pekho Street market (no tourist trap markets like Temple Street, these are the real deal), we had an absolutely amazing time trying the local dishes that have won either a Michelin star or other awards for the best in the world. Our favorites included the rice rolls at Hop Yik Tai, and the dumplings made in front of you at Yuen Fong by a sweet old lady. I could go on and on, but you just have to experience it for yourself. Mel also told us about HK in general, opened our eyes to the culture and the struggles they face, and explained life from their point of view for different providences. It was a very, very enlightening tour and I recommend it to no end. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We live in Hong Kong but decided to do this tour not being able to travel over summer due to COVID. It was great to be a tourist in our own city. Mel was a fantastic guide and explained so much that we didn’t know about the city. We also tried some delicious food spots we wouldn’t have found otherwise. Highly recommended - I’ve already suggested this to a number of friends also living in Hong Kong.

We took a private night tour with Nicole as our guide. It was a mixture of exploring Kowloon with a food tour. The entire night was fantastic. We learned about the other side of Hong Kong, not the glitzy roads full of the Hermes, Cartier.... We learned about about how and where the rest of Hong Kong lives, as well as the history of the area in an engaging way.
The best part, however. was the phenomenal food we ate, particularly dinner. We ate at a local restaurant, not a tourist trap. Nicole helped us order and the food was incredible and was a great way to learn Cantonese cuisine.
We still saw a bit of the "sights," like the lights on the Harbor, but the vast majority was the real Hong Kong, which we never would have seen because we didn't know the language and we didn't know where to go (those guidebooks skip what we saw).
We cannot say enough good things about Nicole -- enthusiastic, full of energy, knows her stuff, and the best, she is passionate about food -- a FANTASTIC guide. In fact, after the tour we had a medical emergency at night and ignorant of Hong Kong we texted Nicole late at night for help understanding how to get to a hospital and she answered right away and sent us in the right direction without hesitation, an incredible act of kindness. She also followed-up to make sure everything was OK.
We cannot recommend Hello Hong Kong enough to make your trip to Hong Kong special.

I was originally booked to do a small group night food tour, but unfortunately there were not enough people on the tour for it to go ahead, and I because I only had a day and a half in Hong Kong I couldn't reschedule. I was very disappointed but was offered alternatives including a private tour for the same night. It was a lot more expensive but I figured I might as well make the most of my time in Hong Kong and I really wanted to try some of the local food, and I definitely have no regrets!!
My guide was Amy who met me in the lobby of my hotel. Amy was very friendly and easy to chat to, and an excellent guide. It was my first time in Hong Kong so as well as taking me to lots of different local food places she also gave me a bit of a guided tour as well. She was very flexible with what we did, I could basically make the tour whatever I wanted it to be! She took me to try snake soup, some local desserts, spicy fishballs, and also went to see the wet market (I didn't last very long in there!). So many awesome things! I really loved how we visited some places that were the poorer parts of Hong Kong which you would never know to visit if you weren't on a tour. I also love how all these little places you just sit down at a table with the locals, I had a nice chat with a little old lady in the snake soup place who was telling me about the benefits of eating snake soup. Such an amazing authentic experience!
I thought it might be a bit weird doing a private tour when it was just me by myself, but Amy didn't make me feel like it was awkward at all. I would definitely recommend doing a food tour with these guys, you really get a much better experience than trying to find these things yourself! I would actually do the same tour again if I come back :)

I had an absolute ball of a time (5 hours) with Mel who introduced me to Kowloon and it’s treasures. Was expecting a standard agenda of being taken to some of the well known markets (which we did visit), but instead was treated to a tailor made journey based on my interests in HK films and tv, people and culture, and of course Cantonese food ... We meandered through markets but also backstreets and council housing to discuss the different tiers of living standards in the city. I had a plethora of questions ranging from the serious to popular culture, and Mel was always able to answer with insight, and would even make side trips to help explain. Yet I have to especially commend Mel for taking me to a couple of DVD stores to help me find rare movies, and even weighed in with translation with the store owners! Did not expect this at all. Overall it felt like an outing with a good friend rather than an organised tour. Would do this again in a heartbeat!

Took this tour as a solo private tour and enjoyed it a lot. Ryan, my guide was very knowlegable and a born and raised Hong Konger. He told about many different aspects of living in Hong Kong back in the days and also recently. The tour includes some walking, and throughout he provided drinks and snacks that kept me going. It is really a great way to get a feel for this part of the city and understand the dynamics and whats going on. Thank you Ryan!

Our Hong Kong Night Tour with Mel was a great success. He showed us things we would never have discovered on our own and brought the history of Kowloon to life for us. Great tour, great tour guide, what more can I say.

Working with Hello Hong Kong is terrific. From inquiry to tour summary they are customer friendly. They even post your guide’s picture and bio on their website so you know who will be taking you around before you even meet. On first guide was Mel and he introduced us to Kowloon and its lively street markets. We tasted delicious Hong Kong fare at Michelin recommended food shops and walked the flower market as he and we shared in interest in flowers. We also learned a bit of Hong Kong’s history and saw some prime real estate as well as difficult living conditions. Mel amplified his explanations with pictures on an iPad. We traveled on public transportation and all went smoothly. Our evening ended with watching the light show on the river. Mel positioned us by the loud speakers to enhance our experience. We were pleasantly surprised later that evening when we got a lovely email from Mel summarizing what we had done together.

We booked a small group tour prior to arriving in Hong Kong. Unfortunately there was a small hiccup, but honestly this company then couldn’t do enough to fix the issue. Our tour then became a private one for the 2 of us. Our guide-Ryan was truly amazing. He listened to what we wanted and then tailored the tour around our needs. We packed so much into this time that we ended up having a spare day to do other things we hadn’t planned. Ryan gave us plenty of helpful tips and ideas so we could maximise our time. He was also a brilliant photographer, taking photos of us and then sending them to us along with notes of what we had done and other ideas for us to consider. We got back to the hotel truly exhausted but wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks Ryan!
