My husband and I were so pleased to be able to find a food tour that was still going ahead whilst much of Hong Kong life was significantly curtailed because of Coronavirus precautions.

Our guide Yammy was charming and well informed and guided us round the Sham Shui Po district of Hong Kong, far removed from the glitzy skyscrapers and malls of that typify Hong Kong's wealthier areas.

We ate in cafés frequented by ordinary Hong Kong people and had a real insight into how people shop and eat during their daily lives.

Safely back home now and have been inspired to find a recipe for Pineapple Buns (so delicious!) that I'll be making for tomorrow's breakfast.

Our guide Carrie met us at the entrance to a subway in the Sham Shui Po area and took us on a very interesting and quite delicious food tour. She knows the area well and obviously enjoys sharing her knowledge. We had straight from the oven pineapple bun (it melts in your mouth), then long white rice rolls with a variety of seasonings (like white rolled up pasta but better), then freshly made tofu pudding. I normally don't eat tofu but this was like a thin yougert in ginger juice and tasty. We then tried two different dumplings - pork/cabbage and pork/watercress both of which were good most likely due to the presence of lard in the meat mixture. We got to go to the back of the Eight Angels bakery to meet the owner and try several crunchy cookies - yum! The last stop was the only bust in my opinion but a must for locals who enjoy fish soup with shrimp roe - way too fishy for my tastes. During the entire tour we were wandering in and out of different markets selling all manner of interesting items. Do not miss this tour!

Loved this tour! We had some free time in Hong Kong after our China tour ended and we wanted a guide to the local eats. This tour was an excellent choice! We had such a wide range of foods to sample, never too much to fill us before it ended. We were also guided through markets and we were told how the locals live, work and shop.
We were given a booklet to review what we had eaten, in case we wanted to order it again. Thank you very much for a great experience!

Had so much fun exploring a new area with Carrie. She made us feel right at home in her home District. Don’t know if I’ve ever had a guide so knowledgeable about food, culture, and daily life. I would take this tour again and will visit the places she showed us.

This tour is far, far more than just a tasting tour. It is a cultural tour of a neighborhood by someone with a real passion for her culture AND food. Carrie was an excellent guide and made our HK trip extremely memorable. Very glad that we did this. Highly professional, well organized, even providing a map so you could re-walk the trip later. Hong Kong, btw, is empty and you will be treated as a king in your hotel, so plan your visit. We had no issues.

Our tour with Carrie last weekend was excellent and focused on traditional Hong Kong “working class” specialties that were still made on site and to high standards. We spend a lot of time in Hong Kong and can definitely say that everything we sampled was a cut above, if not way above, the average example. Sham Shui Po feels like more of Hong Kong used to feel, with lots of bustling market streets, fun street signs, interesting building colours, etc.. The tour was well designed and paced and also included points of interest other than food. We highly recommend it.

NB: We thought morning tour time would be a great way to avoid any weekend protesters as they never seem to be up till afternoon. We did eventually see some later in the afternoon, hours after our tour ended and after we had walked down to Mong Kok, but they were extremely polite / nothing like you see on TV. All the neighbourhoods we walked through were business as usual and felt very safe. Was a lovely day...

I went on the Sham Shui Po district food tour, with Carrie, and it was such an amazing experience! All of the food we tried was delicious, and food that I wouldn’t have gotten to try had I been on my own. It was an incredible tour, with a focus on the history of the neighbourhood as well which was a real highlight. Carrie was so great, and so knowledgeable. Would 100% recommend to my friends and family for a real authentic Hong Kong experience!

We love food tours and have done them all over the world. Hong Kong Foodie's Sham Shui Po tour was one of the best we've done. Our guide was Carrie and she took a group of mainly middle aged Americans and Brits on a fascinating traveling breakfast tour of a neighborhood away from the usual sights of Hong Kong. We ate on plastic stools at places we never would have found on our own and had delicious food, including the biggest pineapple bun I've ever seen and, new for me, breakfast rice rolls -- which I will now seek out at home in the San Gabriel Valley. The neighborhood feels like a place where real people live and Carrie spent a lot of time answering our questions about living conditions (and costs) in a city of such density.

Hi Megan, Thanks for joining us on our Sham Shui Po Foodie Tour and for taking the time to write a review. We are really glad to hear you enjoyed the tour so much. We created the Sham Shui Po Foodie Tour more than five years ago not only for the fantastic food this foodie neighborhood offers (aren’t those pineapple buns giant??), but also because it is a fascinating community of true Hong Kong locals. We are glad to know Carrie was able to show you and the group around and answer questions raised. Thanks also for supporting food tourism worldwide. We think it’s an excellent way to not just taste great food, but to learn about a culture, a neighborhood and its history. We hope you’re able to find some breakfast rice s in the San Gabriel Valley! If all else fails, come back and eat with us again! Thanks!
