- 1A morning with the elephants is an eye-opening and inspiring experience. Following a scenic drive along a local village you will arrive at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, a picturesque jungle dotted with ponds, wide open fields and hillsides for the elephants to roam around. Your visit starts at our Tree Top Lounge, where we will show you a presentation and educational video to prepare you for your encounter with the elephants, and to help you understand why they need to be protected. Next up, the elephants are fed. While they enjoy their baskets of bananas, pineapples and cucumbers, you have a chance to learn from our guides about the background of each elephant. Once the elephants are fed, we follow them down into the jungle. By keeping a safe distance and watching them from our Observation Salas, the elephants have the freedom to express their natural behavior, from bathing and playing in our pond to socializing with each other. The program ends with a delicious Thai vegetarian meal.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- laurie6440 contributionsAmazing experience, recommended to all!!This sanctuary is absolutely amazing. Your guide can tell you everything about the elephants, they genuinely care. Each elephant has its own minder who literally walks about with them constantly. The only contact you have with the elephants is when you get to feed them, and this is in a controlled environment. I came away from this day feeling delighted we had picked this sanctuary as there's so many to choose from with what seems different levels of 'care'. One comment I'd like to clear up is further down someone states they are locked away when the sanctuary isn't open. The guide explains to you that they have to put them in 'pens' during the night as the elephants roam. They have had to in the past pay local farmers as the elephants have eaten their crop. This is not hidden, you can see the 'pens' they are put in during the night. They are not locked up! This sanctuary is fantastic, I will return.Written 23 March 2025
- John W0 contributionsAn afternoon with the elephantsOn our recent trip to Phuket my wife wanted to visit an elephant sanctuary. After researching what was on offer she decided on the Phuket elephant sanctuary. She wanted to visit the elephants in a non tourist type setting. We went for her birthday in the afternoon. The visit started with an educational video about the history of the sanctuary and its owner followed by the opportunity in small groups to walk around the sanctuary with a guide and meeting the various elephants which have been saved and now have the opportunity to see out their lives in peaceful surroundings. The tour was really informative and a truly great experience. At the end of the day we had the opportunity to feed a couple of elephants and we were then treated to a wonderful vegan buffet. There’s also a small shop to purchase souvenirs. Again all the staff were amazing, friendly, informative and really good with the animals. This was a great way to see the elephants up close in a natural environment without the suffering. Highly recommended.Written 23 March 2025
- B8220NIrichardp0 contributionsBeautiful elephants treated with respect and careWhat an amazing and important place. Beautiful elephants living the best life they can in amazing surroundings. Very friendly and informative staff, treating the elephants with respect and care. Go here rather than the camps. Elephants aren’t supposed to do tricks! Really good food and drinks offered as part of the tour. Highly recommended!Written 22 March 2025
- W1747LFfionaw0 contributionsWonderful place ❤️We loved our trip here, bar the long wait to get started. It was very well-organised and our guide, Rudy, was fantastic and very funny. We were so happy to see somewhere that values elephants so much and is giving them a beautiful retirement. I hope your cataract patient is fully recovered now and back in the wild. Lunch was a delicious buffet and there was a huge variety of dishes, all vegetarian but very tasty. It was the hottest day we'd experienced so it was hard standing out in the sun but so very worth it. Thank you for the amazing things you are doing, it was an honour to feed your elephants.Written 21 March 2025
- Voyage187282656000 contributionsPhuket elephant sanctuaryExtremely well organised and informative. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience from drink and snacks at beginning and end of visit, to feeding the elephants and being able to observe them in natural surroundings. The elephants are truly taken care of here. The walkway is a great idea. Would definitely recommend.Written 20 March 2025

- 846Kaz0 contributionsExcellent way to help and learn about the elephants and their individual stories ..Such a wonderful highlight of our trip so far. Sanctuary well set up with no touch just observe policy of the elephants both at ground level and from canopy walkway. Seeing them enter the water and bathe was a particular highlight. Very Informative with a lovely guide who answered our questions. Although distressing to hear what the elephants have been through really bought home the importance of this sanctuary Very Accessible and the hospitality with a selection of Thai dishes at end of walk was very tasty. The shop had great quality ethical goods at good prices which also helps their cause. Comes highly recommendedWritten 20 March 2025

- LaLaH300 contributionsRescued Elephants Finally FreeThe best experience in Phuket. Excellent service and educational. The elephants each have their own story and you can tell they are very well taken care of. I am glad this organization exists and I hope they are able to rescue more elephants. There really is no need to force elephants into labor for our entertainment. Here you can see them in their natural habitat. It was really a great experience.Written 18 March 2025

- D5983LQmelaniet0 contributionsSpectacular day with the elephantsThis was a spectacular day with the elephants. We learnt a lot more about elephants and sadly about how these elephants had previously been mistreated. Once here at the Sanctuary they are cared for with gentleness, kindness and love. A very special experience to get up close to these beautiful animals, to help prepare their food and hand feed them. A day which will live in our memories for ever.Written 17 March 2025

- Mikaela C0 contributionsLife changing experience!Absolutely incredible experience. We got to feed an elephant and give her a pat which was amazing. I loved hearing all the individual elephants stories of having suffered a life of abuse and now receive so much love and care. Our tour guide, Anny, was brilliant and so knowledgeable about all the elephants. The free drinks and food were a lovely unexpected surprise and delicious! Hearing the story of why they opened the sanctuary was all we needed to hear to buy plenty of items from the souvenir shop! All gorgeous items. If you want to see elephants in Thailand, the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is definitely the right place to go.Written 16 March 2025

Amazing place! We got to see a few elephants enjoying their life and their food, it's clear that the animals are cared for and loved. Our guide was knowledgable, sharing the insights about the elephants both in general and in regard to the ones living in the Sanctuary. Each animal had its own heartbreaking history, and it's important to support the organization that clearly strives to make a difference. Even though the tour was a bit more expensive than the other tours on Phuket, I didn't regret a single thing.
The place is looked after, organizational details are on point, you can see that the staff wants you to enjoy the experience without making the animals suffer.
There is a very nice catering service (both for breakfast and for the light lunch), though be careful - my friend got sick afterwards (but it was also her first time in Thailand so it might have been a lot of different factors together).
Definitely recommend visiting, hearing the stories about the elephants, feeding them and watching them enjoy their life after working so hard!

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary was a major highlight of our Thailand trip. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Phuket or nearby areas.
I visited Phuket Elephant Sanctuary on January 11th with my fiancée and her parents. They picked us up at our hotel in a timely manner, and transported us to the sanctuary where we enjoyed free fruits and beverages before our tour began.
Prior to the tour, you learn more about the sanctuary and its goals. It is such an amazing cause. Their focus is providing loving homes for elephants who are retired - elephants who are too old or too disabled to work anymore, whether it be logging camps, riding camps, or the circus. The video they showed talking about the abuse elephants face while working was not graphic, but extremely moving, and I felt myself tear up.
We chose the half-day package that begins in the morning. So we started by feeding the elephants fruit (bananas and apples), before walking all over the sanctuary, enjoying close encounters, taking photos, and learning about them. It was so rewarding, and peaceful too. Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious free lunch, buffet-style. It was a vegetarian lunch, but still delicious and filling. The dining area and bathrooms were all very clean. They also took us back to our hotel as part of the package we purchased.
Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is an amazing place to visit. It was a privilege to see such beautiful, intelligent creatures and their natural behaviors. It is an ethical and great cause. It is also SAFE. The elephants are always accompanied by mahouts (handlers) and you are always accompanied by a guide. A tourist was killed earlier this month at a different elephant attraction also in Phuket. PES is knowledgeable about and responsible with their elephants, which creates a safe environment.
PES is a truly unique and beautiful experience that kids, adults, and seniors can all enjoy. It is a good value - unlike other tourist attractions, they don’t nickel and dime you for pictures or other parts of the experience. The only other opportunity to spend money is the (optional) gift shop.

A well-oiled operation with an obvious care and consideration for the wellbeing of these amazing animals.
The sanctuary sent a cab to pick us up right on time. You’re brought to a beautiful tour center with coffee, water, and fresh fruit. After a short documentary the tour begins. Our tour guide, Alex, was very passionate and seemed to know everything about each elephant and the broader mission of the sanctuary.
Our tour consisted of briefly feeding a pair of the elephants, learning about their enclosures, meeting (from a distance) several of the sanctuary’s residents, and watching elephants bathe and go about their daily business. It concluded with a delicious vegetarian lunch that had me going back for seconds.
This sanctuary is clearly committed to their mission and is devoting maximal resources to improving the quality of life for elephants all over Phuket.
Definitely recommend - not just for the elephants themselves but to support the ongoing work of this sanctuary.

The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience. Witnessing these majestic creatures in a natural environment is truly awe-inspiring. Supporting sanctuaries that prioritize animal welfare ensures a positive impact on not only the elephants of Southern Thailand but worldwide. Learning about elephant conservation efforts along the way enriches the entire journey. I would highly recommend adding this unique and responsible activity to your travel itinerary.

Visiting Phuket Elephant Sanctuary was a heartwarming experience! This sanctuary stands out for its strong commitment to ethical tourism and animal welfare. It’s evident that they truly care about the well-being of the elephants. Each elephant has its own dedicated mahout and is well cared for. The elephants are free to roam in a vast, lush forest, which is their natural habitat—no riding, no tricks, no swimming with them—just observing these majestic creatures in their element.
The tour itself was absolutely amazing! Our guide was empathetic, deeply knowledgeable, and shared valuable insight about the sanctuary’s mission and the lives of the rescued elephants. It made the whole experience even more meaningful.
One highlight was getting to feed the elephants, which was such a delightful moment.
The vegetarian lunch was another highlight—a delicious buffet with many options to choose from.
If you care about animals and want to support ethical practices, I cannot recommend Phuket Elephant Sanctuary enough. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to make a positive impact while enjoying an unforgettable day with these beautiful creatures.

What an amazing morning! You come in the morning and you are greeted with the words feel at home, where there is a great selection for breakfast while watching elephants in their natural habitats walking around. After you get shown a video of why and how the sanctuary were created, with a reference to how bad elephants get treated at tourist attractions for entertainment which is actually very upsetting.
Then you are divided into small groups and you taken by your guide to feed the elephants which is a truly unforgettable experience! They are truly gentle giants!
Then you are taken on a tour around the sanctuary where you can see the elephants just walking around, bathing and eating their food. The tour guide tells you the story of each and one of them, and you can ask any questions you may have. The guides are very knowledgeable, i actually have learned things that I never knew before and had the chance to ask questions about elephants.
You end the day with a vegetarian lunch, that was absolutely delicious and then you can have a wonder around in the little shop. Anything you buy goes towards the care for the elephants as well as the ticket price that you pay for the excursion.
The actual excursion might be on a pricier side but it’s definitely worth every penny as you can see how happy and free the elephants are! And you can still take pictures with them and watch them from close without any abuse towards the gentle giants.

We had a lovely morning at the elephant sanctuary. Picked up from hotel, and after registering in the office, 10-minute ride in the back of a truck to get to the place. Food was available when we got there (snacks, fruit and drinks).
Given gumboots to put on and able to leave shoes and belongings in lockers. We were split into groups of ~10-15 with a tour guide so it wasn’t a massive group walking around which was great.
The only contact with the elephants was feeding them some fruit, otherwise the tour involved observing them mostly from a distance (but got very up close at times with one walking straight past us). We saw many different elephants, mostly eating but some also swimming etc. Definitely felt like an ethical place that cared deeply about the elephants.
Even though it’s pricey, would 100% recommend going as the profits go towards maintaining the sanctuary and trying to rescue more elephants.

This is a sanctuary that had 4 elephants when we visited, they don't offer rides on the elephants, they care very deeply for them. Our experience with a 1 on 1 guide included making our lunch together with our guide Thuy (pronounced tee) feeding the elephants bananas and sugar cane, as well as cooking up food supplements for the elephants, making things out of dried elephant poo, not as disgusting as it sounds because it's basically just fibre and there is no smell from it. We just spread it out to dry on a board and they make things out of it to sell for funds.
We went a short walk through the forest with one of the elephants too and watched as her keeper washed her as well. It was about 4 hours long and they also arranged transport (extra cost) for us from Patong beach in Thailand where we docked with the cruise ship. If you love and care about elephants, I would recommend visiting this sanctuary as we loved every minute of our visit.

Amazing experience and very well organised. If you visit Phuket and you get the opportunity, I highly recommend that you visit this place. You will not regret it and you’ll never visit those shows /circuses with performing elephants again. Even the so called ‘elephant friendly’ trekking tours are not ethical.
These people have found a perfect way to combine tourism with giving old or injured elephants a compassionate retirement in a natural environment. With a capacity for maximum 25 elephants in a 30 acre, jungle area. At the time of our visit they have just thirteen, but the entrance fee goes towards their funds for buying and rescuing more from torture or death if they cannot work any longer. They only permit a maximum of 85 visiting tourists per day. So it is really unrushed and close to nature.
Transfer to and from hotel to the venue was very professional. They even provided a delicious Thai vegetarian lunch.
Please support it if you can.

This was the best trip we have ever experienced on all our travels. We visit many destinations and this is a not to be missed experience if you like an ethical adventure. We fed and walked alongside the elephants in their open habitat. The guide we had for one hour “Jeffy” was very knowledgeable and told us everything about all the elephants and how they have been rescued and their health needs. We had breakfast, refreshments, lunch cold towels and pre-arranged transfers to and from our hotel in Patong, all booked on their website before leaving the UK. All together it cost about £150 and wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
