My wife and I had a wonderful & memorable 11 days (private & customized) trip to Nepal recently. Our itinerary was arranged by Mountain Mart Treks & Expedition (“MMT”).

From the moment we first contacted Dolakh, the owner of MMT, we knew that we are in safe hands & that we are going to have a great time! Dolakh was so quick to respond to all of our incessant queries. This being our first time going to Nepal & doing a mountain trek, we were somewhat concerned with the difficulty level & also our ability to trek. Dolakh was very detailed & assuring in his explanations to us. He even modified our trekking itinerary to suit our “capability”!

We had such an amazing & unforgettable trek from Ghandruk to Landruk, then from Pothana to Australian Camp & the next day from Australian Camp to Dhampus.

Dolakh assigned 2 great staff (Tilak & Pemba) to look after us from the time we touched down at Kathmandu airport until the day we bid farewell to them at the airport.

Tilak, our trekking guide was so kind & patient with us, always walking at our pace (which was very very slow🤣) without showing any signs of exasperation! He would always follow closely one of us who was the last along the trail to ensure that we were ok & safe! He is also very knowledgeable with all the names of the mountains at the Annapurna range & would take the trouble to explain & to point out to us, over & over again, which was which despite our difficulty in remembering the names😅! And during all of our meal stops, Tilak would ensure that our food is served on time, and would attend to all our needs; he really “pampered” us during the entire trek and was such a great company!

Pemba, our driver cum porter, was also absolutely incredible! He carried our luggage during the entire trek & drove us around & to all our destinations safely.

We would highly recommend Mountain Mart Treks & Expedition to anyone looking for a reliable company to arrange your itinerary in Nepal!

Again, thank you very much Dolakh, Tilak & Pemba for such a memorable and amazing trip! We hope to see you guys again in the near future !!

Warmest regards,
Thean & LF

We did the 4 day Poon Hill Sunrise trek with Ram and Rupesh as guide and porter. It was an amazing experience, walking through the mountain forrests and passing all the small villages that are mostly inaccessible by car. On the third and fourth day, we rose early to see the sunrise over the Annapurna mountain range, crazy beautiful! Our guide, Ram, really did his best to ensure we had the best experience and showed us the beauty of life in the mountains. Accommodation and food were very good, I recommend sticking to the local meals to get the full experience!
Pro tip: bring a pack of cards to play during the evening, even the locals can join!

We have just completed the 4 day Poon Hill Trek and it was everything we hoped for. Our guide Prem excelled in every way from explaining things, organising our meals and accommodation and making it fun along the way when at times it was tough! Our porter Prakash was also very friendly. The trek was organised through Dolakh who we met in Kathmandu before departing and he was suitably informative and ensured a good organisation throughout, including delivery of our t-shirts to our hotel at the end of the trek. We would not hesitate to recommend Mountain Mart Treks! Thanks for an unforgettable experience.

We booked our 2 week trip to Nepal without doing much research and decided to do a little bit of everything. We did the Poon Hill trek with a Chitwan jungle safari.

Our guide Raju was amazing. He went above and beyond every day to make sure that we were okay. Doing all the little things like finding us extra blankets and customising our sightseeing excursions to be more to our tastes.

Our porter/driver, Pemba, made all the driving incredibly comfortable on the what should be scary roads of Nepal.

My only complaint was that there was too much food! I came to Nepal to loose weight!!!!

All the city hotels were very good and in good locations. On the trek all the ‘tea houses’ exceeded our expectations, and Raju definitely got us the best rooms by charming the owners.

We will definitely be back and use Mountain Mart again.

I completed the Everest base camp trek with a friend on a private trek through mountain mart and couldn’t recommend more. Amazing scenes, accompanied by our guide Makar who went above and beyond to ensure we were happy and safe, as well as informed us on Nepalese culture the vast various mountains we came across. Thoroughly recommend.

This has been a most memorable trip to Tsum valley and Manuslu circuit with Sudip. I first met him in 2017 on the Annapurna circuit. Sudip was a fun companion on the trip with his Nepalese sense of humour and good wit. He has attention for detail and the trip was a smooth transition during trying times. Sudip had shown care, concern and compassion at all times and the trek was an awesome experience. Many thanks to Sudip who has a passion for trekking and Dolakh of Mountainmart treks for always being available.I plan to continue trekking with then in the future. Thanks again to an awesome experience with many wonderful memories. The service was five start at all time and Sudip English is great.

Hi Barry, I would like to thank you in visiting Nepal once more right after Covid-19 crises and attempting Manaslu Tsum Valley Trekking 22 days with Mountain Mart Trekking Company. Your last visit after earthquake in April 2015 and 16 days long Annapurna Circuit Trekking, gave us an opportunity to revive in travel tour sector. Last time, Annapurna Trekking trip to Nepal employed and surplus hopes to our survival (Guide and Porter) Guide Sudip gladdened to see his work review on TripAdvisor and motivated into his guiding profession. He enjoyed himself working on your Manalsu Tsum Valley trekking pacakge and proud on you having a customer. It was his first trek after pandemic hit Nepal Tourism in 2020 March, this Manaslu trekking work money supported his family food and son education. Thank you so much once again Barry, traveling Nepal right after covid protocol withdraw, giving some work to Mountain Mart Treks (MMT) team and spreading message “Nepal Is Opened and Safe to Travel” “See You Next Year to Langtang Trek again”

We just returned from this trek and it was the trip of a lifetime. We’re not regular trekkers and it was a good challenge each day. Our thoughtful guide Raju and porter/driver Pemba really made it fun and interesting. Some of the terrain can be difficult but they helped us on each step, and made the sometimes basic accommodation much better. Highly recommended!

All of them are friendly and hardworking. From Dolak the Boss, Ram the guide and the porter name Sujan and Chitra. We have seen with our own eyes during that day about other guides treating their customers so regimental, some lazy to assist and the last one to reached at most areas and even unfriendly ones. We are so fortunate to choose Mountain Mart. Good job guys. Keep it up. I'll definitely recommend all my contacts to Mountain Mart

We did the 4 day Annapurna Short Trekking Package, and we were very pleased with the overall experience. Our guide Ram was very sweet, kind and fun to be with and we already miss him! The lodging was comfortable, with hot water in the showers and warm beds. We will definitely hire the same company and same guide for our next mountain trekking in Nepal!

I chose Mountain Mart based on its tripadvisor reviews.

Initially, communication was excellent with almost immediate responses. Dolakh, was also very accommodating to my questions and requests as I was trying to coordinate timings with my other son coming on a different flight.

Later on however, responses took more time (Oct is high season) and I had to chase him up on some questions. I had told him I wanted to add a trip to Tibet right at the start, but was told to wait closer to my departure date. Then when I did follow up, he advised that the visa and cost wouldn’t be worthwhile. Instead, he suggested Bhutan, but then shared that there wouldn’t be enough time to arrange the visa. In the end I used a different company who managed to organize my Bhutan trip easily. That said, my main trip with Mountain Mart was the Annapurna Trek so that was fine by me.

Once we arrived in Kathmandu, we were picked up by Bimba who drove us to the hotel. He was a safe driver who had an occasional quiet smile. But don’t expect small talk or a big friendly welcome. At the hotel, we had no idea what to expect after that as Bimba didn’t speak much English and didn’t give us any instructions.

I had shared earlier on in my emails that we’d wish to squeeze in some sightseeing before and after our trip, but since nothing seemed to be arranged, I asked the front desk to help us organize a taxi and guide. At this point, they said they’d call Mountain Mart.

Dolakh then informed us that he would have a car ready for us ($20USD) and would also come meet us to give us some instructions, as well as pick up the rest of the fees.

We had a quick bite to eat and met Dolakh in person. He was friendly and gave us everything we needed (trekking duffles, sleeping bags, walking poles).

We visited the Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath. The former was fine, but the latter was a waste of time and money ($30). I didn’t know that the main temple was only open to Hindus, and that the cremation ceremonies typically ran 5-7pm. By the time we arrived, it was too dark and too late to see much. I should have done my own research but also would have appreciated a heads up from Dolakh.

Anyway, we had our flight the next morning and was greeted by Prem, our guide, at the airport. He was friendly and gave us a quick briefing.

We piled into a Jeep and started the journey. Along the way, when I inquired whether I should buy water now or later as I wasn’t sure what stops we were going to make, I learned that you can buy water up to a certain point, but should still have the fizzy water purifying tablets (which we didn’t have). Prem quickly got us some as well as the best samosas I’ve ever had.
After a rough 3.5hr Jeep ride (had no idea it was going to be that rough!) we got to our starting point.

Our trek was great. Prem often stayed with me because I was (much) slower, while my boys would be ahead with Teakch and Changcha, our porters. They were also very friendly and obviously knew what they were doing, so I trusted them to take care of my boys if needed. Over the five days, my boys built up a good rapport with them.

With me, Prem would occasionally point out a some sights or special plants. He would also give us tips such as always keep the room door closed to prevent bugs flying in. Mind you, this would have been nice to know before having to rid the room of moths and other flying insects!

I enjoyed the conversations along the way from religion to food to politics to local life in general. I appreciated the encouragement and support on the tough parts of the trek. “Slowly slowly...” he’d say or reassure me that I was doing good. Occasionally he’d Zumba down the mountain or start singing.

Once at ABC, both my older son and I had some altitude adjustments but Prem made sure we were ok. We later learned that the hangover sensations are typical. We knew about the altitude effects but didn’t realize it’d affect us differently. I had a headache and couldn’t get warm. My older son was fine until he went to sleep and felt awful the next morning.

The next morning we were greeted with breathtaking sights of the mountains. Prem and crew woke up with us pre dawn to help us take photos. Amazing views!

The trek down was a lot faster. I should add that Prem had modified our trekking itinerary which made a lot more sense and was more manageable than the original one. The change was also in part of the lack of rooms due to high season, but everything worked out in the end. Thank goodness for that!

We arrived back in Pokhara with extra time to spare so we had a quick look around the lake before flying back to Kathmandu.

Once in Kathmandu, again, Bimba picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel. Again, no instructions from Dolakh so we went out for dinner and a massage.

Prem had helped me relay that we wished to do some sightseeing the next day before everyone flew off in the afternoon/evening. Dolakh responded via email around 8:30pm, but I didn’t get a chance to respond until 9:30pm when we got back to the hotel.

The next morning he called the hotel to get in touch and helped us arrange a car and guide for the day ($95USD). Our first guide was a nice enough young lad, but absolutely useless. He said he was a qualified tour guide, but I highly doubt it with his very limited English (he could not hold a conversation with me) and his very limited knowledge. We would have gotten more info off wikipedia.

After visiting the Monkey Temple and Patan, then dropping off my younger son at the airport, I requested a change of tour guide. Dolakh explained that it was high season and because of the last minute arrangement, this was the quality that was available. At which point I told him he should have informed me of this earlier so I could have considered alternatives.

In the end, Simar (our first guide) managed to find us another guide who took us around Bhaktapur. Rosha was excellent. He knew the history well and also shared snippets of daily life and his perspective on things in general. Be sure to try the Newari lunch with the local crunchy bitten(?) rice!

I should also mention that Dolakh did call us halfway to follow up so that helped him earn back a point on service. He also suggested that we add a visit to Changu Narayan since we had extra time. It was an amazing old temple with great views of the valley.

After Bhaktapur, they dropped us off in Thamel for a short rest before taking my older son to the airport.

All in all, I would recommend Mountain Mart for the trekking, but perhaps consider some other companies for the tours or general sightseeing. That or make sure everything is clearly outlined with expectations communicated on both ends.

My rating here is for the trekking only. I’m a tough rater. 5 stars would mean top notch and outstanding with little or no room for improvement. In this case, I feel that communication, proactiveness and attention to detail both pre, during and post trek is where it would make the bridge from good to great.

I suppose experienced trekkers would already know everything and be super prepared, but we’re not hard core trekkers and I feel reminders would always be appreciated - that’s where the extra special touch comes in.

I am very glad we did this trek. We had a great adventure which Prem, Teakch and Changcha made possible for us. We will have many fond memories!
