What to expect
  • Greet your private guide at your Guatemala City hotel and climb aboard an air-conditioned coach to begin your sightseeing tour. As you travel, you’ll receive an interesting introduction to the history of Guatemala City, formerly known as La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción. Head to the city’s Civic Center (Centro Civico) to see an impressive array of buildings constructed in the 1960s; cruise past landmarks such as the Supreme Court, City Hall and the Ministry of Public Finance, and stop to admire the Bank of Guatemala’s murals designed by Dagoberto Vásquez. Continue to the city’s historic heart — Constitution Plaza (Plaza de la Constitución) — and admire the plethora of monuments that reside there. The undisputed centerpiece is the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), an 18th-century treasure topped by a vibrant blue dome. See, too, the National Library and the National Palace of Culture (Palacio Nacional de la Cultura). The next stop on your private tour is the Central Market (Mercado Central), a bustling hub replete with stalls selling artisan souvenirs and local produce. Spend a while browsing ceramics, leather, textiles and jewelry, and then conclude with a visit to Paseo Cayala, a luxurious, whitewashed complex. Here, you can purchase a delicious dinner and choose to spend the night in the hotel’s lavish accommodation. If you opt to leave Paseo Cayala after dinner, your tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

Made a booking by myself which I had to pay for twice (I was desperate for something to do in GC), fair enough. However the tour was super quick and I was basically rushed through the market and the city centre, not even stopping for coffee as promised... it didn't feel in depth or worth my time and money at all on reflection, and the guide was hardly interested in much besides reeling off info... it felt super one-dimensional. I wouldn't do it again sadly.

Davis was an amazing guide, and we felt very safe throughout the entire tour, despite a good amount of walking through crowded downtown areas. The only drawback was that the tour description notes there is time to have dinner in Cayala and still get a ride back to the original hotel pickup, but apparently (unfortunately) that is not the case. We had about 15 minutes in Paseo Cayala before heading back. If we had wanted to stay for dinner, we would have had to find our own way back on our own dime. Just keep that in mind when booking this tour!

Overall, though, it was a great afternoon, and we were able to see some great sights that we wouldn't have considered doing on our own (especially not at a walking pace).

Do it alone, more time tiding in car than at market
Great tour. Such a long drive from Antigua that we had 10-12 at the market and could meet for lunch at the church.
