Overview
Discover ancient Mayan architecture on an excursion through Belize's exotic landscapes. You'll enjoy stunning views and spot diverse wildlife as you make your way to the Lamanai ruins, one of the most famous sights in Belize. Accessible only by water and a brief hike, this adventure is fun for the whole family.
Highlights
  • Visit the Lamanai Maya ruins on a day trip from Belize City
  • Float through lush scenery and spot wildlife on a New River cruise
  • A jungle hike leads to the ruins of an ancient Maya city
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch by the side of a tropical lagoon
What to Expect
The adventure begins with pickup at your Belize City hotel and a 45-minute drive to reach the New River, where you board a river cruise. Glide through a lush landscape of creeks and lagoons and through a tropical forest rich with birdlife and orchids. Watch the stone pyramids of Lamanai emerge from the jungle as you near. Visit the on-site museum to learn the history of the site and see ancient Maya artifacts. Reach the main cluster of ruins by a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) hike through the jungle. Highlights include the Jaguar Temple, the imposing Temple of the Masks—one of the tallest in Belize—and the carved mask of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau. Learn the ceremonial functions of the pyramids and explore the ruins with a guide. You refuel midday with a provided picnic lunch on the side of a tropical lagoon. Make your way back to Belize City the way you came.

Saw some crocks. Plenty of birds. The boat trip was easy. The pictures of the ruins didn’t do it justice. The ruins are awesome.

This may sound petty, but I was impressed by Discovery Expeditions the moment I saw their clean, well maintained restrooms. The excursion was very well organized and our guide, Carlos, stopped the boat whenever we encountered wildlife, which was often. While at Lamanai, we had...More

There was no plane. We signed up on our cruise ship and took the tour that way.

The bus ride is almost two hours each way. You learn a lot about Belize on the way there and back. All together it was around 6-7 hours long. The temples were breathtaking. The road leading up to the temples has been... More
