Overview
On this 4.5-hour round-trip tour to Mount Vernon, gain a whole new perspective on U.S. history. On the way, a guide provides fascinating historical background and stories about points of interest in Old Town Alexandria that are often unmarked and easy to miss. While most guided tours stick to rigid schedules, you are free to explore George Washington’s former home at your own pace.
What to Expect

Board the bus at L’Enfant Plaza in downtown DC. Rather than navigating out of the city on your own, sit back and listen to on-board commentary during the scenic 30-minute ride to Mount Vernon, home of George Washington.

During the drive, the guide points out landmarks you may have missed have you come on your own, including General Robert E. Lee’s boyhood home and a tavern once frequented by the Founding Fathers. Enjoy the sights of historic Alexandria from the comfort of the coach as you make your way to Mount Vernon.

On arrival, explore at your own pace. Visit the gardens overlooking the Potomac River, the slave memorial and burial grounds, the outbuildings, and the Washingtons’ tombs. No need to purchase tickets in advance, as they are included in the tour.

About 4.5 hours later, return with the guide to the tour’s original point of departure in Washington DC.

Nice day trip from DC

Nice half day trip from DC. Nice property. Lots of history surrounds this site. Very good restaurant on site. Recommend if needing a break from DC touring. One time enough though. Only real complaint was B grade tour bus driver narration.

Better than expected

After having read about the tour online I did not expect the live commentary and the visitation of Alexandria on the way to Mount Vernon. It was a pleasant surprise as our guide and driver Charles Smith was an amazing and captivating storyteller. The bus...More

It does include admission to the mansion. The house part of the tour is guided. Then you are free to explore the grounds in your own.
