Highlights
  • Catch a train at the easy-to-find Dunedin's historic rail station
  • See beautiful scenery in a roadless area you couldn't see by car
  • Learn as your ride with this tour that's full of history and railway facts
  • Great way to get to beyond developed parts of New Zealand
What to Expect
Make your way to the Dunedin Railway Station, whose Renaissance revival architecture makes it among the city's most eye-catching landmarks. Step onto the Taieri Gorge Railway, and then pull away from the station and into the South Island countryside. There's a cafe and bar on board if you'd like to grab a drink or a snack, or just sit back and watch the scenery unfold as a guide shares stories from the train's past, from engineering challenges to the terrain itself. The return journey to Dunedin follows the same route, but gives an entirely different perspective on the green valleys and hills, with twists and turns that keep the ride engaging until you arrive back at the station.

We took the afternoon return trip, departing at 3pm, returning at 7.30pm. The Dunedin weather forecast was not looking promising, but as soon as we left the city, we were in the sun. This is a spectacular trip with ten tunnels, some amazing iron bridges and even a couple of

A lovely trip especially if you like trains. Informative and interesting. Certainly an engineering feats for it's time. It was a shame our weather wasn't 100% because I can imagine it would have been amazing in fine weather. If you have a car and need to park for the day,

Hi there yvie63, Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We're glad you had a lovely trip and were impressed by the engineering feats of the early pioneers, it certainly is pretty amazing that the rail line was built over 100 years ago! We believe the gorge is beautiful in all types of weather, every day is so different and different weather and seasons bring different experiences to the journey, all of which are beautiful. If people are ever unsure about parking we encourage them to get in touch with our team and we will be able to provide advice on this. But yes one of the best places to park is at the North end of the platform and across the road in the $4 park. If you are ever back in Dunedin it'd be great to have you onboard again :). Thanks and regards, Natasha Dunedin Railways
