Magic journey
What a magic journey! I love travel by train and this trip did not disappoint. The scenery is beautiful and it was so relaxing to watch the world go by. My only wish was that you could listen to the commentary on the outside viewing carriage. Seats were comfortable and loads of legroom and great big windows for viewing the scenery from. The cafe carriage serves Wishbone food although the queue is long. If you were going to do the return journey in a day it would be good to get off in Moana to enjoy the lovely Lake Brunner area for a couple of hours.

Essential for NZers to do at least once
Jul 2021
A must do for all NZ'ers especially now with no overseas tourists when I imagine it would be not as pleasant. July, a great time to go as being able to see the mountains capped in snow and frosts on the ground was wonderful.
We did a day return trip whcih meant 8 hours sitting on our bums which I wouldn't recommend. Instead, I would suggest doing one way only, get off at Greymouth and spend a night or drive from there to Nelson.
There is a separate dining car and a separate viewing car, open to the elements for you to get photographs without the glass reflection.

Kia Ora Camda, Thank you for your review! We are so pleased you had a pleasant journey onboard with us. How beautiful is the scenery during this time of year?! Doing a day return journey is a great idea, as you can get off in Greymouth for lunch before re-boarding or take advantage of stopovers and enjoy any places you want to visit on the way before hopping back on when the train comes back past again that day or the next. We hope you had a great rest of your onward trip! Best Wishes, Karen | The Great Journeys of New Zealand

Alpine views
Return day trip on a not that fine day, but still able to see the surrounds easily on the way to Greymouth.
As there was a delay the return trip ended in darkness, but that is expected in winter.

Excellent commentary along the trip through individual headsets

An hour in Greymouth which was enough to stretch the legs.

Parking available at Addington station.

Extremely Disappointing
Apr 2021
We had booked Scenic Plus 6 months ago. 24 hours before departure we got an email to say "Plus" had been cancelled for operational reasons. Totally inadequate explanation. We were offered a refund for the difference plus food vouchers but there is no compensation for a missed experience. Also, in the advertising photos of scenic plus it shows table seats and so we were expecting our seats to be at a table but no, it was like sitting in economy on a plane trip with your little drop down table on the back of the seat in front on you. There only seemed to be a third of the carriage with table seating. My seat was positioned between a window join and so there was no way I was ever going to get a full scenic view of anything. Because our "Plus" experience had been cancelled we had to use our vouchers, $25.00 each to buy food from the cafe carriage and of course they ran out of the popular meals but had an over abundance of vegetarian dishes. On the upside the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating and one in particular went out of his way to try and find me a particular meal I wanted - which he found, so full marks for that, it was really appreciated.

Kia Ora, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback regarding your recent TranzAlpine train journey. We do apologise for cancelling our Scenic Plus service - this was due to an urgent operation reason and has since been suspended. We did refund the fare difference between a standard fare and Scenic Plus fare as well as providing meal vouchers to use on board as compensation. Regarding seating, our carriages have a mix of 4 seats around a table and paired seating with the fold down tables. Our seating is currently the same across Scenic Plus and our standard service. We are so glad to hear you found our staff friendly and accommodating and I will pass your comments onto the team. All the best, Kirsten | The Great Journeys of New Zealand

Disgusting
Mar 2021
We had booked on the 7th March was sent an email to say it was canceled the day before we would have been in level 1 so there was no need to cancel.Disgusting way to treat customers we had traveled from Hamilton especially for this as a 50th wedding anniversary. Its not as if we can just change all our arrangements.

Kia Ora 687val, Thank you for taking the time provide us with your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you were unable to travel with us on the TranzAlpine. Unfortunately, we were unable to operate this service due to the change in COVID-19 alert levels. For us to operate we needed to get exemption, this happens when the alert levels do change. Our customer service team contacted all affected passengers as soon as they could, and we offer all passengers the opportunity to change the date of travel or cancel and receive a full refund. Once again, we are very sorry you were unable to travel with us and we hope to see you soon. Kind Regards, Kirsten | The Great Journeys of New Zealand

Top class service and breathtaking views.

What an amazing experience! The last time I did this was as a school kid and now I'm 40, I just realized what I've been missing out on this whole time.
Everything was top class, the service, staff and views are amazing, I spent a bit of time on the open viewing car.
Next time I might take the coastal pacific, and I'll be sure to get the Scenic Plus as you get thirsty over a long day.
