Quaint trams, easy way to get a quick but limited overview of downtown Christchurch. NZ$30 for 24 hour single adult ticket is good if you need a rest from walking, or don’t want to walk, or just want to ride on a 100-year old tram. Hop on and off is nice. I rode the tram twice in 24-hours just because I wanted to see these sites before and after I walked around the city. Interestingly, with two different conductors who provide live comments on interesting facts about the city, you get different experiences. One conductor was great, very funny, and had interesting anecdotes; the other was dull and made me want to tell the other passengers to get off this tram and try the next one.
If you have a guidebook and are in good enough shape to walk around for an hour, skip the expense, fire up your Google maps and save yourself some money. If you want to ride in a tram, especially with kids, it’s worth the money.

The Christchurch On/Off Tram experience provides a great way to get to know the CBD area of Christchurch. At NZ$30 for a “day pass” it offers great value. The 50 minute trip gives the customer great insights into what attractions to see/visit.
Tour guides/Tram Drivers were excellent; relevant local knowledge and enjoyable and sometimes cheeky repartee. The journey takes you to what would appear to be the majority of the city’s major attractions including the main retail strip, Cashel Street. Other highlights include the Avon River, the Botanical Gardens and the Christchurch Museum.
All this aboard historic trams from around the world.

We really enjoyed riding on the tram and got so much information. As a matter of fact, we liked it so much that we did the entire route when we first got on and then after hopping on and off all day, we did the entire route again! We got to see so many things we would of missed if we hadn't taken the tram. We really enjoyed all the street art. It was also fun to see the different style trams and hear the different drivers tell about the city. We would highly recommend this to anyone traveling to Christchurch for the first time.

We used the tram to get a tour round the city centre as we thought it would be a fun experience for us and the kids. The trams were well run and the drivers we saw were excellent with great commentaries. The carriages were clean and well maintained. Easy to get on and off and with just minimal planning got us to places we wanted to see. We did think the adult prices were a little high but as our children went free we feel for us it was a worthwhile experience.

If you are desperate to do everything a city has to offer and you don't mind being ripped off take the tram. I can think of many things better value for money than sitting in an old tram for an hour and paying 30 dollars per person for the privilege. Your mind and body would be much better off taking a walk round the tracks.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your feedback
We do encourage people to hop on and off with their ticket to utilize the all day pass. Unfortunately we don't offer another ticket type if people just want to do the one loop. We do provide a full commentary the whole way round which gives visitors some great information about our city centre
Kind Regards

It thought it’s not worth it because you could definitely go around the city by foot and probably doesn’t need to pay 20 bucks but this tram tour is so worth it. It’s so informative and would recommend it to do right after you arrived to the city so you could plan what to do or where to go next. I actually ended up hopping on to the tram a few times in a day cause I found it so fun!

Great introduction to the city, we did a whole circuit before getting off. The trams themselves are wonderful pieces of history and you are paying towards the upkeep of them as well as the journey. So in my opinion, not too expensive. The commentary from the driver is original and unrehearsed so if you change trams you get a different perspective. If you only have limited time in Christchurch I would recommend you start with this attraction.

Great way to see the city. The seats on the tram are hard wood, but if you get on and off it shouldn't be a problem. They do allow people on the tram if the seats are full...they are allowed to stand, so it can get crowded. Masks are not mandatory and most passengers were not wearing them. The commentary was very informative and easy to understand. I would definitely do this excursion again.

Booked for dinner tram staff were brilliant made us feel welcome and special. Meal was brilliant from appetizers to deserts and wine selection, though pricey, was delightful.
Very happy to recommend them to anybody and will definitely go again.

Quaint old trams give a different ride around the city centre with a running commentary. Journey very much city centre based and very walkable if you didn't want to ride the tram. Watch out for the 'Wizard' tho ... he may just hop on to your ride! Fun to do and one the children might enjoy.

Will be arriving on a cruise ship. How do we get to the tram. We will have a 2 year old with us. Is there a cost for her age. do we have to book ahead. Thank you.

Pretty much any downtown drop point from the cruise ship will deliver you close to a tram stop I would imagine. Tickets can be purchased on the tram or from staff who may be at some of the larger stops. No bookings required. I think children of that age were free but not 100% certain.
Is there a special rate for The Gold Card and how many can be seated at one time

Capacity depends on the carriage you board, but I believe some can carry up to 48 passengers. I'd say the ones I was on would take around 20. As for the Gold Card, check the goldcard website, but they are currently showing 20% off Tramway fares until 31st March.

Pitch for 9am to 6pm and you will be right. It is subjected to specific company events. Just ask. Although in this climate, that will be pulled back. Regarding social isolation requirements, it may be pulled back.

Hi we just came back from NZ. I was going to buy an e ticket but was given the same advise so opted to pay on entry at any of the stops. No issues and easy to do. Parking - used the Botanic gardens car park , it's free and right opposite is a tram stop. Same with the Caterpillar tram in the Botanic gardens- can buy an e ticket or buy at any of the stops. Both are well worth the effort and great commentary. Good value & fully recommend the trips
