Kaitaki: we booked the Queen Charlotte Lounge on the way down which was comfy and came with discounted food passes ($15 each). Ship was full of people and young families, so the 18+ lounge was very relaxing. Also used our Nautical Miles for priority Onboarding with our car and we were third off the ship in Picton. Nice ship; tidy and food, staff friendly, while not flash, was pretty good. BIG shout out to the Contact Centre and Nautical Miles people who were absolutely brilliant north times I needed their assistance.

Kia ora! Thank you for your great review on Interislander. Queen Charlotte Lounge is such a fantastic way to travel on Kaitaki! Being adults only and including a food and beverage voucher makes it a comfortable way to travel. I will ensure to also pass your lovely feedback onto the teams who you had a great experience with. Kind regards and thanks, Karen

I booked a ticket from Wellington to Picton with DirectFerries.com). At the time I didn't know exactly what car I would be driving (it would depend on the rental company) but according to their website that would not be a problem as I would be able to amend it when I have the car available.
When I received the car and tried to amend the particulars in their website they replied that the amendment was not possible.
I contacted the operator, Interisland, and could get a ticket for the same day and time as my original one.
Then I asked for a cancelation of the ticket with DirectFerries.com (according to their website that would be possible for a fee).
They replied that cancelation was not possible (even after I insisted that according to their website it was possible).
So I got ripped of of the value of the ticket by DirectFerries.com...
With Interisland all went smooth and as planned...

Kia ora, Thanks for leaving a response. I am sorry to hear you had a disappointing experience with our third party agents, Direct Ferries. Unfortunately, tickets bought through them customers are bound by their terms and conditions. I am glad the Interislander team could help you resolve this. Kind regards and thanks, Karen

After a horrible day for the ferry Co. With a ship declaring a Mayday when it lost propulsion on Sat.. - they were quick to contact us via e mail with I formation, however limited. Within 4hours they had an update and 4 hrs after that our 6am cancelled ferry was rescheduled for 20 Hrs later.
We went to the port terminal to see if we could avail of a ship travelling sooner and the staff did all they could and got us one 10 hours earlier.
Despite a delay on the dock which pushed their schedule back an hour we were happy to be moving.
We booked the Plus lounge which was excellent, with great staff - well worth the cost.
All in all - the company did their best under difficult circumstances.
Well done.

Kia ora! Thank you for leaving a review. Pleased to hear you still had a fine journey with us, despite the disruption we experienced when the ship lost temporary power. Our staff are professionally trained for all situations and I am also glad to hear you were sorted quickly only another sailing. The Premium Lounge is the best way to travel, we agree! I will ensure to pass your lovely feedback on. Kind regards and thanks, Karen

Interislander notified us of cancellation 2 hours before departure, NOT due to the poor weather but due to staff shortages, we had turned up 2 hours prior to our departure to check in and were told to turn around and wait for communication from the company. I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes waiting on the phone to be told there was no availability until March, over 2 weeks after our original crossing, basically wrecking our holiday of a lifetime due to company mismanagement. This has cost us financially and travelling with a wheelchair user much stress and frustration

Kia ora, Thanks for leaving a review. I am so sorry to hear you were affected by this. Unfortunately, we need minimum crew numbers to sail and in an unforeseen circumstance where multiple staff are unwell, we are unable to sail. We understand this is highly unfortunate and frustrating to customers, however, we must abide by Maritime NZ laws. Furthermore, I am sorry we could not accommodate you on an alternative sailing at that point in time. We were one ship down during peak peak season and we were incredibly limited for passenger space to move people into. I hope you did manage to get onto another sailing or find an alternative travel arrangement. Kind regards and thanks, Karen

Booked for the 13.00 hrs ferry. Advise was: be there 1 hr before departure. We were there at 11.30 hrs. At 13.00 hrs still in queue. Waiting waiting waiting. And no explanation at all.
And that it says: "if you all check in early, we might leave 15 mins. earlier. Yeah right.
Advise: check in as late as you can and visit the toilet before checking in.
This procedure here is a disaster...

Kia ora! Thanks for your review. Sorry to hear you are disappointed. Sometimes ferries can be delayed. January is peak peak season for us and sometimes we have heavy loads and it can take longer, but we always aim to leave on time. Final check in times are set at 1 hr before, similar to many other transport agencies, to ensure customers are there and checked in ready to start embarkation. Hope you will try us again soon! Kind regards and thanks, Karen

We had a hard time finding an opening to go between the islands, and were happy to get a walkon spot on the afternoon ferry. It pays to reserve much in advance, even more so if you want to take a car on! The checkin requires baggage check, carryon only small bags, backpack essentially. The queue to board is long and uphill, might be worth knowing for people with limited mobility. Staff is friendly and casual. On board are several different areas for sitting, some like high end airplane seats, other like lounge seats, couches, also tables and the like, as well as outdoor standing areas. We went on a day of very high winds, so once we got into the Cook straits the boat did roll a bit in swells, 6-9 ft, but it is huge so the motion was pretty modified. Once approaching the south island you are in a straight between islands and peninsulas so the water was calm. the views were terrific, except that with the rain and not the cleanest windows it was hard to get good pictures. Outside the views were better, but wind was pretty terrific, but refreshing and a bit wet. Baggage claim works well and there are cabs, vans at the exit to get you to hotels.

We were lucky to cross the Cook Strait on a day when the sea was relatively calm. Consequently we really enjoyed the trip and the hospitality in the premier lounge. The trip really falls into 3: departing Wellington harbour: crossing the strait: entering Marlborough Sound to Picton. The latter is a beautiful part of the cruise on flat calm waters - unfortunately we didn't have a dolphin escort but many do. Taxis are hard to organise in Picton when you arrive - pre-book and agree the price

The ferry crossing is always good, but the mask situation was like the keystone cops. For no reason anyone around me could work out people had to wear masks, with no masks if you are in the cafe or eating, or have an exemption. This security guard kept going around telling people to put them on and as soon as he passed everyone took them off. So they're on and off and wear them here, but not there, it was ridiculous and completely unnecessary and made the trip really not very nice. The InterIslander needs to get rid of masks.

0/10. Or. 0/100.

I am a Kiwi and discussed with the way this company is running at present. The change in ferry sailing times, to the time you are left queuing to even get CLOSE to boarding is DISCUSSING.

We arrived at 10-30pm for a 1am final check in.

12 midnight we moved forward to check in,

2am told to all move as close as possible re car spacing.

3-45 expected departure time arrived and passed

4-15am. Still sitting waiting to move closer to ferry.

Our so called departure time has been changed THREE times also since the time of booking

I know that they have been experiencing troubles.with vessel breakdowns, BUT this is no way a business.

Sort notice cancellation of our sailing caused us a real headache in our trip around NZ. Ended up having to buy a flight at short notice and to change or transport plans for the rest of the trip. The basic voicemail response was they were too busy to answer is if your sailing is cancelled we are fully booked going forward to accept a refund.
Hotels ended up being fully booked as the knock on is significant for the city.
A shambles! I would not advise anyone to rely upon using this crossing as part of a touring trip or NZ.
