Atherton Tablelands Rain Forest by Night from Cairns
US$143.72
Overview
The lakes, rain forest, and waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands harbor an incredible variety of wildlife, all just an hour's drive from Cairns. On this tour, enjoy a rare opportunity to hike through the jungle both during the day and at night, and spot nocturnal creatures, such as platypus, possums, owls, and Lumholtz’s tree kangaroo.
What to Expect
After pickup from your Cairns hotel, set out on the approximately 1-hour drive into the Atherton Tablelands region. Start your tour by with an afternoon walk through the rain forest, looking out for tropical birds, butterflies, and flying foxes or fruit bats. Stop to admire natural wonders, including ancient kauri pine trees, the Curtain Fig Tree, and Barrine Crater Lake. Then, enjoy afternoon tea at a lakeside teahouse.

Continue your tour with a sunset walk to spot platypus, which are most often seen at sundown, before heading to a traditional country restaurant for dinner. After nightfall, follow your guide on a thrilling rain forest hike by torchlight, and look out for nocturnal wildlife, including green geckos, Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos, gliding possums, frogs, owls, and tiny ringtail possums.

Back in Cairns, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Platypus in wild!

Joined this amazing afternoon-till-night tour! Our wonderful guide Paul took us to different spots and he knows how to find those Australia wildlife animals quickly! We saw ringtail possum, brushtail possum, pademelon and python, all nocturnal rainforest animals you can name them! And I got...More

Lots of sightings, excellent guide, beautiful landscape

If you are an animal lover, this is the tour for you. I did six different tours out of Cairns and this one was my absolute favorite. We saw so many different creatures, and the scenery was lovely. Getting away to the quiet, scenic backroads...More

I am glad you enjoyed your tour. We always get to see lots of animals, the other tours are all day trips so beautiful scenery but not many animals. Our timing means we see so many. Thanks for the review.

My wife and I had an amazing tour with Paul who was a fountain of knowledge. As Australians we learnt many interesting facts about North Queensland's rainforest and wildlife and the night time tour allowed us to see a lot more. It was also the...More

I am glad you enjoyed it. We have so many rare animals, birds and reptiles around here that as you found even Australians have not heard of many of them. It is a very special piece of Australia here. Thanks for the recommendation.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our host was knowledgeable and experienced, and we were able to see animals rarely seen in the wild. Our friends from Sydney were especially surprised we saw platypuses swimming in a creek. I was glad to see...More

Thanks for the recommendations. The night sky on a clear night is a special sight. Seeing platypus as often as we do always suprises Australians as they are seldom seen.

How about everything?

I could not have asked for anything more from my tour of Atherton Tablelands with Wait a while. We saw, literally, everything from tree kangaroos and possums to huge huntsman spiders and the elusive platypus. I was truly enthralled with the amount of wildlife that...More

There is a lot of wildlife around here, you just have to know where and more importantly when to look for it. That’s our specialty. Thanks for the recommendation.

No real hiking at all. There are several stops with no long walks at all. I would estimate all of them together at no more than 1.5-2 miles.

Paul uses a minivan, so plenty of space for four of you, we stayed in Palm Cove and pick up was not a problem, slightly earlier than he advertises on his website, at 13:00
